Study on Ship Detection Using SAR Dual-polarization Data: ENVISAT ASAR AP Mode

  • Preliminary results are reported on ship detection using coherence images computed from cross-correlating images of multi-look-processed dual-polarization data (HH and HV) of ENVISAT ASAR. The traditional techniques of ship detection by radars such as CFAR (Constant False Alarm Rate) rely on the amplitude data, and therefore the detection tends to become difficult when the amplitudes of ships images are at similar level as the mean amplitude of surrounding sea clutter. The proposed method utilizes the property that the multi-look images of ships are correlated with each other. Because the inter-look images of sea surface are covered by uncorrelated speckle, cross-correlation of multi-look images yields the different degrees of coherence between the images and water. In this paper, the polarimetric information of ships, land and intertidal zone are first compared based on the cross-correlation between HH and HV images, In the next step, we examine the technique when the dual-polarization data are split into two multi-look images, It was shown that the inter-look cross-correlation method could be applicable in the performance improvement of small ship detection and the land masking, It was also found that a simple combination of coherence images from each co-polarised (HH) inter-look and cross-polarised (HV) inter-look data can provide much higher target-detection possibilities.

  • This paper describes a design for microstrip EMC cross dipole array antenna with circular polarization. To realize the wide bandwidth and circular polarization, the electromagnetic-coupled cross dipole is used. To obtain the uniform aperture illumination, offset technique for array is adopted. In 20-element array design, the calculated axial ratio and gain are about 0.1 dB and 9.9 dBi at 12GHz, respectively. The frequency characteristics of a fabricated 20-element array antenna are measured. The calculated results agree well with the measured ones.

  • ITR-R의 강우에 의한 교차편파 모델은 35GHz까지만 적용 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 실제의 강우환경에서 충분한 정확도를 가지는 교차편파에 대한 단순한 이론 모델을 제안하였다. 이를 측정치 및 ITU-R모델과 비교함으로써 밀리미터파대역까지 적용할 수 있는 교차편파 추정모델을 도출하였다.

  • For combating multipath fading in wireless radio environment, diversity schemes is useful. In this paper, for performance improvement of polarization diversity system, we analyzed a two-branch polarization diversity at the receiving end of a mobile link when the transmitter emits a circularly polarized wave. And In order to calculate the correlation coefficient considering the XPD(cross polarization discrimination) between the received signals for the two diversity branches, a simple theoretical model of circular polarization diversity is adopted and calculate correlation coefficient. From the analysis results, it is seen that the correlation coefficient of circular polarization diversity evaluated by the XPD is less than that of vertical polarization diversity. And also, we designed and fabricated circular polarization diversity system with microstrip antenna. we analyzed data measured in indoor NLOS environment using fabricated circular polarization diversity system. From the measurement results, it is clearly seen that the diversity effect of circular polarization diversity system is higher 3dB than vertical polarization diversity system.

  • 직교주파수분할다중화방식(OFDM)은 부채널간의 직교성을 이용하여 주파수 스펙트럼을 중첩시킴으로써 스펙트럼 효율을 이상적으로 증가시킨 고속의 병렬 변조방식이다. 그러나 OFDM은 부채널간의 스펙트럼이 크게 중첩됨으로 인하여 안정된 채널 환경을 요구하고 있다. OFDM의 경우 채널 환경이 열화하면 부채널간의 직교성이 상실되어 시스템의 큰 성능 저하가 발생한다. 따라서 된 논문에서는 이러한 성능 열화를 개선하기 위하여 서로 역선회하는 원편파를 이용한 다중반송파변조방식인 XCP-OFDM(OFDM using Cross-handed Circular Polarization) 시스템을 제안하였다. XCP-OFDM 시스템은 인편과의 고유 특성인 기수회 반사파 억제 특성과 편파의 식별도가 큰 서로 역선회 하는 2개의 원편파를 사용하여 부채널의 스펙트럼 중첩을 없앰으로써 시스템의 성능을 향상시킬 수 있는 새로운 방식이다. 제안된 시스템의 성능을 이론적인 해석과 더불어 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 이용하여 제안 방식의 우수성을 나타내었다.

Broadband Characterization of Circularly Polarized Waveguide Antennas Using L-Shaped Probe

  • This paper introduces a technique to obtain the broadband characteristics of circularly polarized antennas using an L-shaped probe. A waveguide antenna is suitable for obtaining high gain and handling convenience in some applications; however, the asymmetrical structure of the L-shaped probe results in cross-polarization and frequency dependence on the field distribution of higher-order modes (HOM). In addition to the basic characteristics of a waveguide antenna with an L-shaped probe, the author discusses some techniques to reduce the HOM and cross-polarization. As a result, the 3-dB axial ratio (AR) is obtained with the fundamental mode even when the frequency is expanded to the region for HOM of TM. This reduction is mainly due to the cutoff structure to the TM mode around the short wall of the waveguide. Furthermore, some aperture modification techniques can reduce the cross-polarization in a wide range of angles in the radiation pattern. Such techniques and their mechanisms are discussed in this paper. The obtained performance shows that the proposed antennas have a wide range of angles of 3-dB AR in the radiation pattern, broadband characteristics in impedance and AR, and low variation in group velocity.

높은 교차편파 분리도를 가지는 이중편파 안테나 설계 (Design of Dual-Polarization Antenna with High Cross-Polarization Discrimination)

  • 도심의 빌딩 등 인구밀집지역에서 사용되는 소형 셀 기지국에서는 셀 용량 증대를 위해 이중편파 다중안테나(MIMO)가 주로 사용된다. 본 논문은 이중편파 다중안테나(MIMO)를 사용하는 소형 셀의 용량을 향상시킬 수 있는 높은 교차편파분리도(XPD)를 가지는 이중편파 슬롯 안테나를 제안한다. 제안한 안테나는 평형구조 및 차동 급전회로를 사용하여 교차편파를 효과적으로 억제하고 높은 교차편파분리도(XPD)를 가진다. 또한 두 편파가 동일한 방사특성을 가지게 되어 소형 셀 다중안테나(MIMO) 시스템에 적합한 특성을 가진다. 모의실험, 제작 및 측정결과 제안한 안테나는 반사계수 -10 dB를 기준 180 MHz (2.51~2.7 GHz)의 대역폭, 최대 4.5 dBi 방사이득(3.5~4.5 dBi), 85도의 반 전력 빔폭을 가짐을 확인하였다. 또한 평균 교차편파 분리도(XPD)가 26.4 dB로 기존의 단일방사체에 서로 다른 급전을 이용하는 방법, 스위칭을 통해 편파를 선택적으로 사용하는 방법에 비하여 13.8 dB이상 개선된 특성을 가짐을 확인하였다.

INTERPRETATION OF POLARIZATION RESPONSES OF URBAN AREA

  • Polarization of the radar wave refers to the ellipticity angle and orientation angle of the polarization ellipse. An evaluation of the polarization response can help understand the scattering mechanisms involved for a particular area of interest or provide information for image classification and algorithm section. C- and L-band polarization responses measured at urban area show the results that the polarization behavior for dihedral comer reflector or short, thin cylinder reflector appears at located in city streets or buildings site which are lined up and the polarization behavior for a large conducting sphere appears at parts of test site particularly river, flat, and vegetated areas. Also, the co- and cross-polarized response graphs and polarimetric parameters are discussed.

  • Cross-polarization (CP) signals were observed even from liquid samples such as neat toluene. Therefore, CP signals of liquid molecules in the presence of high surface materials do not necessarily mean the molecules are adsorbed on solid surface, especially when no signal from the tertiary observing nuclei such as carbons of the molecules is detected.
