Knowledge of the relationship between crop yield and yield-limiting factors is essential for precision farming. However, developing this knowledge is not easy because these yield-limiting factors are interrelated and affect crop yield in different ways. In this study, data for grain yield and yield-limiting factors, including crop chlorophyll content, soil chemical properties, and topography were collected for a small (0.3 ha) rice paddy field in Korea and a large (36 ha) upland corn field in the USA, and relationships were investigated with path analysis. Using this approach, the effects of limiting factors on crop yield could be separated into direct effects and indirect effects acting through other factors. Path analysis provided more insight into these complex relationships than did simple correlation or multiple linear regression analysis. Results of correlation analysis for the rice paddy field showed that EC, Ca, and $SiO_2$ had significant (P<0.1) correlations with rice yield, while pH, Ca, Mg, Na, $SiO_2,\;and\;P_2O_5$ had significant correlations with the SPAD chlorophyll reading. Path analysis provided additional information about the importance and contribution paths of soil variables to rice yield and growth. Ca had the highest direct effect (0.52) and indirect effect via Mg (-0.37) on rice yield. The indirect effect of Mg through Ca (0.51) was higher than the direct effect (-0.38). Path analysis also enabled more appropriate selection of important factors limiting crop yield by considering cause-and-effect relationships among predictor and response variables. For example, although pH showed a positive correlation (r=0.35) with SPAD readings, the correlation was mainly due to the indirect positive effects acting through Mg and $SiO_2$, while pH not only showed negative direct effects, but also negatively impacted indirect effects of other variables on SPAD readings. For the large upland Missouri corn field, two topographic factors, elevation and slope, had significant (P<0.1) direct effects on yield and highly significant (P<0.01) correlations with other limiting factors. Based on the correlation analysis alone, P and K were determined to be nutrients that would increase corn yield for this field. With the help of path analysis, however, increases in Mg could also be expected to increase corn yield in this case. In general, path analysis results were consistent with published optimum ranges of nutrients for rice and com production. We conclude that path analysis can be a useful tool to investigate interrelationships between crop yield and yield limiting factors on a site-specific basis.

Nutrient accumulation in surface soil has become a serious problem for cucumber production in greenhouse. However, still in many cases, soil management practices are only focused on maintaining crop yield, regardless of sustainability related with soil chemical properties. This study was conducted to propose a sustainable soil management practice by investigating the impact of cover crop species and nitrogen rate of fertigated solution on cucumber yield and soil chemical properties in greenhouse condition. Rye and hairy vetch were tested as a fallow cover crop, and each amount of urea (1/2, 3/4, 1 times of N fertilizer recommendations), determined by soil testing result, was supplied in fertigation plots as an additional nitrogen source. The result showed that the yield of cucumber was higher in rye treatment than control and hairy vetch treatment. In addition, rye effectively reduced EC and accumulated nutrients from the soil. Meanwhile, N concentration of fertigated solution showed no significant effect on the growth and yield of cucumber. Consequently, these results suggest that it is desirable to choose rye as a fallow catch crop for sustainable cucumber production in greenhouse.
Various crop models have been extensively used for estimation of the crop yields. Compared to the other models, the EPIC model uses a unified approach to simulate more than 100 types of crops. It has been successfully applied in simulating crop yields for various combinations of weather conditions, soil properties, crops, and management schemes in many countries. The objective of this study was to estimate the rice and maize yield in South Korea using the EPIC model. The input datasets for the 30 types in the 11 categories were created for the EPIC model. The EPIC model simulated rice and maize yields. The performance of the EPIC model was evaluated with the goodness-of-fit measures including Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Relative Error (RE), Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency Coefficient (NSEC), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Pearson Correelation Coefficient (r). The rice yield showed to more high accuracy than maize yield on four type of method without NSEC. Theses results showed that the EPIC model better simulated rice yields than maize yields. The results suggest that the EPIC crop model can be useful to estimate crop yield in South Korea.
Crop simulation models are valuable tools for estimating crop yield, environmental factors and management practices. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of soil types on barley productivity using CERES (Crop Environment REsource Synthesis)-barley, cropping system model. So the behavior of the model under various soil types and climatic conditions was evaluated. The results of the sensitivity analysis in temperature, $CO_2$, and precipitation showed that soil types had a direct impact on the simulated yield of CERES-barley model. We found that barley yield in clay soils would be more sensitive to precipitation and $CO_2$ in comparison with temperature. And the model showed limited accuracy in simulating water and nitrogen stress index for soil types. In general, the barley grown on clay soils were less sensitive to water stress than those grown on sandy soils. Especially it was found that the CERES model underestimated the effect of water stress in high precipitation which led to overprediction of crop yield in clay soils. In order to solve these problems and successfully forecast grain yield, further studies on the modification of the water stress response of crops should be considered prior to use of the CERES-barley model for yield forecasting.

The importance of forecasting agricultural production is receiving attention while climate change is accelerating. This study suggested three types of crop yield forecasting model for major vegetable crops by using downscaled meteorological information of main production area on farmland level, which identified as limitation from previous studies. First, this study conducted correlation analysis with seven types of farm level downscaled meteorological informations and reported crop yield of main production area. After, we selected three types of meteorological factors which showed the highest relation with each crop species and regions. Parameters were deducted from meterological factor with high correlation but crop species number was neglected. After, crop yield of each crops was estimated by using the three suggested types of models. Chinese cabbage showed high accuracy in overall, while the accuracy of daikon and onion was quiet revised by neglecting the outlier. Chili and garlic showed differences by region, but Kyungbuk chili and Chungnam, Kyungsang garlic appeared significant accuracy. We also selected key meteorological factor of each crops which has the highest relation with crop yield. If the factor had significant relation with the quantity, it explains better about the variations of key meteorological factor. This study will contribute to establishing the methodology of future studies by estimating the crop yield of different species by using farmland meterological information and relatively simplify multiple linear regression models.

Rice yield of South Korea in 2015 was the highest in last 30 years. The future direction of food policy in South Korea can be determined depending on whether the historically highest yield in 2015 can be continued or just one-off event. Therefore, it is necessary to understand whether such a high yield as 2015 can be reoccurred and how often it can occur. This study used the yield monitoring data from National Institute of Crop Science, Rural Development Administration and the meteorological data provided by Korea Meteorological Administration to identify the weather conditions, which could cause high yield, and how often these conditions occurred in the past. Our results showed that significantly high yield in 2015 could occur only when the mean sunshine hours of July and the mean sunshine hours from the end of August to early September are 5.1 hours and 6 hours, respectively. The probability of satisfying these weather conditions was 8/35 (23%) over the past 35 years. And the probability of successive high yield for two years was 1/35 (2.9%). The probability of recurrence of high yield within the next 5 years or 10 years after high yield was 4/35 (11.4%).
TO select the most suitable crop and variety of forage for productivity at the southern part of Korea, The crops of wheat, barley and rye were grown from Oct. 1999 to June 2000. Paldanghomil variety of rye crop was shown to have the highest productivity in comparison to other varieties of crops used in this experiment. It showed relatively high plant height, number of tiller, forage yield and dry matter yield. There fore, it was concluded that Paldanghomil of rye crop was the most suitable crop with high yield in the southern part of Korea. The heritabilities of all characters were estimated to be high.
Improvement in rice grain yield has been approached by means of genetic amendment, cultural management, and environmental adaptation. Subjecting the plant during the grain filling period to an appropriate environment plays a key role in achieving a high grain yield in temperate rice. Field experiments were conducted for two consecutive years with two planting times to assess the relations among grain filling traits, loss of leaf activity during the ripening period, and the grain yield of temperate japonica rice with wide environmental variation. Higher grain yields were attained in 2017 than in 2016 and with late planting than with early planting. The high grain yield accompanied a comparatively lesser increase in grain weight at the early filling stage but more gain in grain weight occurred during the late filling stage. Final grain weight correlated positively with grain filling duration but negatively with grain filling rate. Extended grain filling duration was associated with higher cumulative temperature and cumulative solar radiation for an effective grain filling period. The reduction in SPAD value ${\times}$ leaf dry weight from heading to harvest significantly correlated with final grain dry weight in a positive manner. No significant relation was found between grain filling duration and the decrease in SPAD value ${\times}$ leaf dry weight during the grain filling period. The results suggest that grain filling duration and loss of leaf activity during ripening independently contribute to environmentally induced yield improvement in temperate japonica rice.

Azuki bean is the important bean crop in Korea, and is traditionally used as a filling material for red bean porridge, rice cakes, and bread, as well as for sediment. So far, the National Insititute of Crop Science has developed azuki bean varieties for various uses, such as for sediment, tea, and azuki bean sprouts. Among azuki bean elite lines, 25 strains were used to analyze the correlation between red bean quality characteristics and sediment yield. The crude protein of red beans was 25.0-28.9%, ash content was 3.8-5.3%, and fat was 0.4-1.0%. As for the appearance quality characteristics of azuki bean, one hundred seed weight was 11.1-19.5 g, the length of seed was 6.45-8.49 mm, the width seed was 4.84-6.45 mm, and the withd/lenght ratio was 0.72-0.89. When the azuki bean were boiled, the thickness of the seed coat was 0.14-0.27 mm and the length ratio of seed was 0.65-0.76 mm, showing that the length of seed was slightly larger than the width. The yield of azuki bean sediment was 239-284% for whole red bean paste, and 144-203% for fine azuki bean paste. As a result of analyzing the correlation between the quality characteristics of azuki beans, such as protein, husk and seed weight, and the yield of azuki bean sediment, the yield of whole azuki bean sediment showed a negative correlation with the seed coat thickness and the length ratio of the original grain at -0.62 and -0.45, respectively. The yield of fine sediment showed a negative correlation with the length ratio of whole azuki beans at -0.49, and a positive correlation with that of white beans at 0.41. However, protein and ash content did not show any correlation with sediment yield. In view of the above results, it is thought that it would be better to have a high seed weight or a low width/length ratio of seed to develope azuki bean cultivar for sediment.
