  • Since ramie suckers distribute soil surface layer within 10cm depth, some of them are dead from low soil temperature in winter. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of various mulching methods on safe overwintering of sucker at three or four years old, fully-grown ramie plots. The sprouting dates of ramie was March 28 in transparent vinyl mulching(TPEF), April 1 in transparent vinyl mulching over cover of straw, manure or rice hull at the amount of 500kg /10a (CM), and April 6 in black vinyl mulching(BDEF). These treatments showed earlier sprouting date from 9 to 18 days than the conventional mulching with 1000 kg straw /10a the sprouting date of which was April 15. TPEF treatment showed the earliest but ununiform sprouting. In contrast, sprouts in CM treatment was uniform but emerged somewhat later compared with the treatment of TPEF. The number of stems per unit area increased 50 percent more in TPEF, and 35 to 39 percent more in CM than the treatment of conventional mulching.

  • Heavy application of fertilizer and manure in excess from the optimum requirement for crop growth can increase phosphorus (P) accumulation and P release potential in soils. In this study, the relationship between soil test P and 0.01M $CaCl_2$ extractable P was analysed to evaluate the P release potential of agricultural soils under different land-use. The paddy, upland, plastic film house(PFH) soils were sampled from Tongyoung and Changnyeong, and Daegok areas in Gyeongnam province, respectively. With respect to the P accumulation, available P contents in upland and PFH soils were 619 and 796 mg $P_2O_5$/kg, respectively indicating that different land-use types can greatly impact soil P accumulation. As soil available P was increased in the paddy soil, the content of 0.01M $CaCl_2$ extractable P also linearly increased without change point. Comparatively, P threshold were detected at 520 mg $P_2O_5$/kg in both upland and PFH soils, indicating that P release potential were higher in these land-use systems. For reducing P release from agricultural soils, management of optimum P content is needed in soils possessing high P release potential. Further, the change point value, if it is to be used as an environmental indicator, requires more detailed investigation to cover a wide range of soil characteristics.

  • This study was conducted to find out an alternative way of rapid and accurate analysis of forage quality. Near reflectance infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to evaluate the possibility of forage analysis and collect 258 samples such as barley for whole crop silage, forage corn and sudangrass from 2002 to 2007. The samples were analyzed for CP (crude protein), CF (crude fiber), ADF (acid detergent fiber), NDF (neutral detergent fiber) and IVTD (in vitro true digestibility), and also scanned using NIRSystem with wavelength from $400{\sim}2,400nm$. Multiple linear regression was used with wet analysis data for developing the calibration model and validate unknown samples. The important index In this experiment was SEC and SEP $r^2$ for CF, CP, NDF, ADF and IVTD in calibration set were 0.70, 0.86, 0.94, 0.94 and 0.89, also 0.47, 0.39, 0.89, 0.90 and 0.61 in validation sample, respectively. The results of this experiment indicates that NIRS was reliable analytical method to assess forage quality, specially in CF, ADF and IVTD, sample should be included for respective forage samples to get accurate result. More robust calibrations can be made to cover every forage samples if added representative sample set.

  • This study accomplished to draw a soil erosion map and a grade map of soil loss hazard in Korea. RUSLE and Rainfall-runoff (R) factor, which was estimated by using the rainfall data observed in 59 meteorological stations from 1977 to 2006 (for 30 years). FARD was used to analyze the frequency, and the whole country R factor was estimated according to the frequency. In the analysis of estimating the whole country R factor, Nakdong river has the smallest vaule, but Han river has the biggest value. According to the result of analyzing soil loss, soil loss occurred in a grass land, a bare land and a field in size order, and also approximately 17.2 ton/ha soil loss happened on the whole area. The average soil loss amount by the unit area takes place in a bare land and a grass land a lot. The total amount of soil loss in 5-year-frequency rainfall yields 15,000 ton and, what is more, a lot of soil loss happens in a paddy field, a forest and a crop field. The grade map of soil loss hazard is drawn up by classifying soil loss hazard grade by 5. As a result of analyzing soil loss, the moderate area which is the soil loss hazard grade 2 takes up the largest part, 72.8% of the total soil loss hazard area, on the contrary, the severe soil loss hazard area takes up only $1,038km^2$ (1.1%) of the whole area. The severe soil loss hazard area by land cover shows $93.5km^2$ in a bare land, $168.1km^2$ in a grass land and $327.4km^2$ in a crop field respectively.

  • Chinese milkvetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) has been traditionally used as a green manure supplying mineral N and organic matters to soil. In rice-Chinese milkvetch interrelay cropping system, three rice cultivating methods (no-till direct seeding, no-till transplanting, and tillage transplanting) were evaluated for stand reestablishment without reseeding Chinese milkvetch with two cropping times (May 25 and June 4) for two years. Chinese milkvetch incorporated was decomposed rapidly in the first week. Decomposition was fast in topsoil than in subsoil. Natural milkvetch reestablishment (NMR), following harvest of no-till-direct-sown rice was good enough to cover the paddy field in both cropping times, but rice yield of this method was lower than that of transplanted rice on paddy field without milkvetch cultivation. Even though good NMR was secured in no-till rice transplanting, the shoot of milkvetch should be removed before machine-transplanting of rice seedlings. NMR was better in rice cropping at the mid-ripening stage of milkvetch (June 4) than at the late-bloom stage (May 25). Rice yield was higher in tillage transplanting at the mid-ripening stage of milkvetch (June 4) than in the other rice cropping method.

  • The effect of hairy vetch sod culture on reduction of soil loss and providing of nitrogen was investigated for the fields of Chinese cabbage in Hoenggye-Ri, Pyeongchang-Gun Gangwon-Do (780 m above sea level) from 2002 to 2003. Hairy vetch was sowed at just before planting, 15, 30 and 40 days after planting and right after harvest of Chinese cabbage. Hairy vetch was sod-cultivated with Chinese cabbage. The amount of sowing was $40kg\;10a^{-1}$. In this experiment, proper sowing times that had no influence on the yield of Chinese cabbage were 30 and 40 days after planting while other sowing times led to decrease the yield. In case of the former, there was 74% reduction effect of soil loss compared with no-hairy vetch because of covering the fields with hairy vetch right after harvest. Moreover, when the hairy vetch was put into the soil before planting of Chinese cabbage in the next year, it showed 61-79% substitution effect of standard application rate ($320kg\;ha^{-1}$, chemical fertilizer) for nitrogen fertilizer. It is suggested that using hairy vetch as cover crop would be useful in conservation of soil loss and reduction input of agricultural materials.

  • Organic farming system in rice paddy is rapidly expanding in Korea. This study was to find out optimum japonica rice cultivars for organic farming. A field research was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of japonica rice cultivars under no-tillage paddy at Doo-ryangmyeon, Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. The experimental soil was Juggog series (silty clay loam: 56.0% silt, 31.2% clay and 12.8% sand). In experiment, ten lines of Japanese rice cultivars were tested under no-tillage amended with rye (NTR) and no-tillage without cover crop treatment (NTNT). In addition, two Korean japonica rice cultivars as check cultivars were used in this study. The grain yield in NTR was significantly higher in 6.13 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Kinuhikari, 5.30 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Komekogane, 5.25 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Kosihikari, 5.22 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Mazizbare and 5.12 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Akitakomachi compared to two Korean rice cultivars (4.57 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Hwayoungbyeo and 4.00 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Ilmibyeo) in that order. While, grain yield in NTNT was significantly higher in 4.90 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Akitakomachi 3.81 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Hinohikari, 3.74 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Umezkusi, 3.67 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Kosihikari and 3.54 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Dondokuri compared to 3.02 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Ilmibyeo and 2.36 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Hwayoungbyeo, respectively. The number of panicle per $m^2$ and grain number per panicle were indispensible for increasing the yield of rice. These results were able to find out optimum japonica rice cultivar Akitakomachi for organic farming in no-tillage paddy.

  • Background: This study investigated the variation of soil organic carbon in four land cover types: natural and mixed forest, cultivated land, Eucalyptus plantation and open bush land. The study was conducted in the Birr watershed of the upper Blue Nile ('Abbay') river basin. Methods: The data was subjected to a two-way of ANOVA analysis using the general linear model (GLM) procedures of SAS. Pairwise comparison method was also used to assess the mean difference of the land uses and depth levels depending on soil properties. Total of 148 soil samples were collected from two depth layers: 0-10 and 10-20 cm. Results: The results showed that overall mean soil organic carbon stock was higher under natural and mixed forest land use compared with other land use types and at all depths ($29.62{\pm}1.95Mg\;C\;ha^{-1}$), which was 36.14, 28.36, and 27.63% more than in cultivated land, open bush land, and Eucalyptus plantation, respectively. This could be due to greater inputs of vegetation and reduced decomposition of organic matter. On the other hand, the lowest soil organic carbon stock under cultivated land could be due to reduced inputs of organic matter and frequent tillage which encouraged oxidation of organic matter. Conclusions: Hence, carbon concentrations and stocks under natural and mixed forest and Eucalyptus plantation were higher than other land use types suggesting that two management strategies for improving soil conditions in the watershed: to maintain and preserve the forest in order to maintain carbon storage in the future and to recover abandoned crop land and degraded lands by establishing tree plantations to avoid overharvesting in natural forests.

  • This study is to assess the reduction of non-point source pollution loads for rice straw mulching of upland crop cultivation at a watershed scale. For Byulmi-cheon watershed (1.21 $km^2$) located in the upstream of Gyeongan-cheon, the HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran) and SWAT (Soil and Water Assesment Tool), physically based distributed hydrological models were applied. Before evaluation, the model was calibrated and validated using 9 rainfall events. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) for streamflow using the HSPF was 0.62~0.76 and the determination coefficient ($R^2$) for water quality (sediment, total nitrogen T-N, and total phosphorus T-P) were 0.72, 0.62, and 0.63 respectively. The NSE for streamflow using the SWAT were 0.43~0.81 and the $R^2$ for water quality (sediment, T-N, and T-P) were 0.54, 0.87, and 0.64 respectively. From the field experiment of 16 rainfall events, the rice straw cover condition reduced surface runoff average 10.0 % compared to normal surface condition. By handling infiltration capacity (INFILT) in HSPF model, the value of 16.0 mm/hr was found to reduce about 10.0 % reduction of surface runoff. For this condition, the reduction effect of sediment, T-N, and T-P loads were 87.2, 28.5, and 85.1 % respectively. By handling soil hydraulic conductivity (SOL_K) in SWAT model, the value of 111.2 mm/hr was found to reduce about 10.0 point reduction of surface runoff. For this condition, the reduction effect of sediment, T-N, and T-P loads were 80.0, 83.2, and 78.7 % respectively. The rice straw surface covering was effective for removing surface runoff dependent loads such as sediment and T-P.

  • Universal soil loss equation (USLE) had been employed to estimate potential soil loss since it was developed from the statewide data measured and collected in the United States. The equation had an origin in average annual soil loss estimation though, it was modified or improved to provide better opportunities of soil loss estimation outside the United States. The equation has five factors, most studies modifying them to adapt regional status were focused on rainfall erosivity factor and cover management factor. While the conservation practice factor (USLE P factor) is to represent distinct features in agricultural fields, it is challenging to find studies regarding the factor improvements. Moreover, the factor is typically defined using slopes. The factor defining approach was suggested in the study, the approach is a step-by-step method allowing USLE P factor definition with given condition. The minimum condition is slope and field location to provide an opportunity for using in any GIS software and to reflect regionally distinct features. If watershed location, slope, crop type, and mulching type on furrows are given, detailed definition of the factors are possible. The approach was developed from field survey in South-Korea, it is expected to be used for potential soil loss using USLE in South-Korea.
