A rotordynamic analysis is performed for a high thrust class liquid rocket engine turbopump considering the dynamic characteristics of ball bearings and pump noncontact seals. Complex eigenvalue problems are solved to predict the rotating natural frequencies and damping ratios as a function of rotating speeds. Synchronous rotor mass unbalance response and time transient response analyses are also performed to figure out the rotor critical speed and the onset speed of instability. From the numerical analysis, it is found that the rear bearing stiffness is most important parameter for the critical speed and instability because the 1st mode is turbine side shaft bending mode. The pump seal effect on the critical speed is enlarged as the rear bearing stiffness decreases and the front bearing stiffness increases.

A critical speed analysis is performed for a 30 ton thrust turbopump considering the casing structural flexibility. A full three-dimensional finite element method including rotor and casing is used to predict rotordynamic behavior. Rotor alone model and rotor-casing coupled model with fixed-fixed and free-free boundary conditions are calculated to investigate the effects of the casing structural flexibility. The stiffness of ball bearings are applied as unloaded and loaded values to consider rotor operating conditions in vacuum and real engine respectively. From the results of the numerical analyses, it is found that the effect of the casing structural flexibility reduces the critical speeds of the turbopump. Especially, the loaded rotor condition with higher bearing stiffness is affected dramatically rather than the unloaded rotor condition with lower bearing stiffness.
Severe downslope windstorms observed at Gangneung, Korea in the springtime during the last 30 years are studied to understand their generation mechanisms. 92 severe wind cases are selected for which the maximum instantaneous wind speeds exceed two standard deviation of total mean plus ($18.7ms^{-1}$). They are categorized into the three mechanisms (hydraulic jump, partial reflection, and critical-level reflection) proposed in previous studies based on the flow condition, which is calculated using the wind and temperature profile observed at one upstream rawinsonde station, Osan. Among the three, partial reflection is found to be the most frequent mechanism for the last 30 years (1976 - 2005). To understand the role of inversion in generating severe downslope windstorms, horizontal velocity perturbation was calculated analytically for the atmosphere with an inversion layer. It turned out that the intensity of downslope wind was increased by inversion layer of specific heights, which are well matched with the observations. For better understanding the generation mechanisms, two-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted for the 92 severe wind cases using the ARPS model. In most simulations, surface wind speed exceeds the value of the severe-wind criterion, and each simulated case can be explained by its own generation mechanism. However, in most simulations, the simulated surface wind speed is larger than the observed, due to ignoring the flow-splitting effect in the two-dimensional framework.

This paper describes the optimum design for low-pressure steam turbine rotor of 1,000 MW nuclear power plant by using a combined genetic algorithm, which uses both a genetic algorithm and a local concentrate search algorithm (e.g. simplex method). This algorithm is not only faster than the standard genetic algorithm but also supplies a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find the global and local optimum solutions. The objective is to minimize the resonance response (Q factor) and total weight of the shaft, and to separate the critical speeds as far from the operating speed as possible. These factors play very important roles in designing a rotor-bearing system under the dynamic behavior constraint. In the present work, the shaft diameter, the bearing length, and clearance are used as the design variables. The results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the Q factor and reduce the weight of the shaft and the 1st critical speed.

In this study, a $CO_2$ air-conditioning system was investigated with different types of electrically driven compressors, parallel flow type gas cooler, four-pass type evaporator, internal heat exchanger integrated with accumulator, and electric expansion valve. The experimental study was conducted under various operating conditions (ie., different rotational compressor speeds, air inlet temperatures and air velocity coming into heat exchangers). The experimental results showed the cooling capacity was 3.5kW at $35^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature when the vehicle was idle (ie., the worst condition for cooling off the gas cooler). In terms of performance effect of the compressor, the e-RP model had a slightly better cooling capacity and coefficient of performance than the e-GR model under the same test conditions. An experimental equation for optimum cooling-performance control was also suggested based on the results. A high-pressure control algorithm for the super critical cycle was determined to achieve both maximum cooling performance and efficient energy consumption. The results from the experimental equation coincided with those of previous experimental studies.
A discharge free Electro-Rheological Squeeze Film Damper (ER-SFD) with predetermined-clearances at leakage ends can inherently eliminate electric discharge problems while still supplying stable leakage control. Test results show that the damping force of the slotted-ring ER-SFD is mainly affected by electric voltage, oil supply pressure, position of the damper and ratio of effective surface area of slotted-rings. As the supply voltage is larger, the amplitudes of both slotted ER-SFD and rotor are decreased at first and second critical speeds. The influence of the oil supply pressure and the effective surface area ratio was shown mainly near the first critical speed. The effective surface area ratio of slotted-rings influences the reduction of flexible rotor vibration. As a result, experimental results confirm that the slotted-ring ER-SFD satisfactorily controls the flexible rotor vibration, while eliminates the inherent electric discharge problems in conventional ER-SFDs.
Shantou Bay Bridge is the first long-span suspension bridge in China. Because of its location near the Shantou Seaport and its exposure to high typhoon winds, wind-resistant studies are necessary to be made. In this paper, critical flutter wind speeds and buffeting responses of this bridge at its operation and main construction stages are investigated. The Buffeting Response Spectrum method is first briefly presented. Then the sectional model test is carried out to directly obtain the critical flutter wind speed and to identify the flutter derivatives, which are adopted for the later analysis of the buffeting responses using the Buffeting Response Spectrum method. Finally the aeroelastic full bridge model is tested to further investigate the dynamic effects of the bridge. The results from the tests and the computations indicate that the flutter and buffeting behaviors of the Shantou Bay Bridge are satisfied.
Using a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation tool, we have provided a coating guideline for slot-die coating with a double layer slot die head. We have analyzed the fluid dynamics in terms of the coating speed, flow rate ratio, and viscosity ratio, which are critical for the stability of coating meniscus. We have identified the common coating defects such as break-up, air entrainment, and leakage by varying the coating speeds. The flow rate ratio is the critical parameter determining the wet film thickness of the top and bottom layers. It is shown that when the flow rate ratio exceeds or equals 1.8, air entrainment occurs due to insufficient hydraulic pressure in the bottom layer, even though the total flow rate remains constant. Furthermore, we have found that the flow of the bottom layer is significantly affected by the viscosity of top layer. The viscosity ratio of 4 or higher obstructs the flow of the bottom layer due to the increased hydraulic resistance, resulting in leakage. Finally, we have demonstrated that as the viscosity ratio increases from 0.1 to 10, the maximum coating speed rises from 0.4 mm/s to 1.6 mm/s, and the minimum wet film thickness decreases from 800 ㎛ to 200 ㎛.

The purpose of present paper is to prove an improvement on stability of plane Journal bearing due to the leaf spring damper(LSD) experimentally A flexible rotor system is designed and manufackuea in order to generate oil whip instability of journal bearing at relative lower rotating speed. Vibration amplitude and instability onset speeds are investigated for a conventional plane journal bearing and plane journal bearing with LSD. To investigate the damping effects of LSD on stability of bearing, experiments are also conducted on the leaf spring dampers with and without working oil. It is found that the leaf spring damper can considerably increase the instability onset speed of a plane journal bearing.
The societal interest on a faster transportation demands an increase of the train speed over the current operation speed of 350 km/h. However, the dynamic response in the roadbed of concrete track system subjected to the train speed ranging between 300 to 500 km/h has been systematically investigated. Herein, a series of the 2-dimensional numerical simulations using various train speeds were performed. A single wheel was modeled by the rigid body. The rail was attached to the sleepers via linear springs in parallel. The results show that the vertical displacement at the rail and track concrete layer exponentially increases when the train speed increases over 400 km/h. This conclusion implies an existence of the critical train velocity at which the displacement of the track system dramatically increases.
