Synthetic data augmentation for pixel-wise steel fatigue crack identification using fully convolutional networks

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) plays an important role in ensuring the safety and functionality of critical civil infrastructure. In recent years, numerous researchers have conducted studies to develop computer vision and machine learning techniques for SHM purposes, offering the potential to reduce the laborious nature and improve the effectiveness of field inspections. However, high-quality vision data from various types of damaged structures is relatively difficult to obtain, because of the rare occurrence of damaged structures. The lack of data is particularly acute for fatigue crack in steel bridge girder. As a result, the lack of data for training purposes is one of the main issues that hinders wider application of these powerful techniques for SHM. To address this problem, the use of synthetic data is proposed in this article to augment real-world datasets used for training neural networks that can identify fatigue cracks in steel structures. First, random textures representing the surface of steel structures with fatigue cracks are created and mapped onto a 3D graphics model. Subsequently, this model is used to generate synthetic images for various lighting conditions and camera angles. A fully convolutional network is then trained for two cases: (1) using only real-word data, and (2) using both synthetic and real-word data. By employing synthetic data augmentation in the training process, the crack identification performance of the neural network for the test dataset is seen to improve from 35% to 40% and 49% to 62% for intersection over union (IoU) and precision, respectively, demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed approach.

  • The relevance of the published study lies in the fact that since the introduction of the first Global Distribution System, new information and communication technologies have constantly been changing the tourism industry. In the context of a current digital environment, travel agencies can't avoid participating in digital transformation processes aimed at rethinking operational models, skills, and organisational structures in the regions. This publication aims to present and provide a critical overview of digitalisation processes in tourism development in the regions of the Russian Federation, as well as to reflect on the challenges to the widespread digitalisation processes in the regional tourism sector. The subject of research is digitalisation processes, as they radically transform the modern tourism industry, in the regions as well. The pragmatic research paradigm was considered the most appropriate for the study of tourism digitalisation processes in the regions, as it does not require the selection of a specific theoretical basis for data collection. The pragmatic approach forms an alternative to classical theoretical approaches and serves as a particular type of grounded theory, combining both inductive and deductive methods. No software was used for the inductive part of the analysis. The deductive part was conducted using the qualitative data analysis software Nvivo 11. Given the wide diversity of interested parties in the regional tourism digital area, a stratified purposive sampling method was preferred due to its ability to adequately represent the full picture of the phenomenon under study. The selection and stratum criteria were chosen to maximise the representation of different perspectives in the regional tourism digital area. The novelty of the study is due to the digitalisation processes, with an implication of new needs, while opening up promising opportunities for more productive tourism business in the regions of the Russian Federation. Currently, e-tourism in the Russian Federation has become a subject of lively debate among scholars and practitioners. However, the involvement of advanced digitalisation technologies in the field of information processes in the regions of the Russian Federation is of a very sporadic character.

차세대 열차제어시스템 안전전송장치 설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on Design of Safety Transmission Unit for Next-Generation Train Control System)

  • 안전전송장치는 열차와 철도 시설 간에 통신을 제공하여 안전하고 효율적인 운영을 보장해야 하는 철도 시스템에서 사용되는 중요한 장치이다. 본 논문에서는 무선통신기반 차세대 열차제어시스템의 안전전송장치를 설계하고 시험하였다. 유럽규격과 국내규격을 분석하고 요구사항을 검토하여 국제적 수준의 안전전송장치의 HW 설계와 SW를 설계하여 제작하였다. 안전전송장치의 기능을 검증하기 위하여 시뮬레이터를 제작하여 설계된 기능이 구현되고 있는 것을 확인하였다.

Study on mechanical properties of Yellow River silt solidified by MICP technology

  • With the development of infrastructure, there is a critical shortage of filling materials all over the word. However, a large amount of silt accumulated in the lower reaches of the Yellow River is treated as waste every year, which will cause environmental pollution and waste of resources. Microbial induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology, with the advantage of efficient, economical and environmentally friendly protection, is selected to solidify the abandoned Yellow River silt with poor mechanical properties into high-quality filling material in this paper. Based on unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, determination of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content and scanning electron microscope (SEM) test, the effects of cementation solution concentration, treatment times and relative density on the solidification effect were studied. The results show that the loose silt particles can be effectively solidified together into filling material with excellent mechanical properties through MICP technology. The concentration of cementation solution have a significant impact on the solidification effect, and the reasonable concentration of cementation solution is 1.5 mol/L. With the increase of treatment times, the pores in the soil are filled with CaCO3, and the UCS of the specimens after 10 times of treatment can reach 2.5 MPa with a relatively high CaCO3 content of 26%. With the improvement of treatment degree, the influence of relative density on the UCS increases gradually. Microscopic analysis revealed that after MICP reinforcement, CaCO3 adhered to the surface of soil particles and cemented with each other to form a dense structure.

Towards attaining efficient management of berth maintenance in Saudi Arabian Industrial Ports

  • Despite the significance of ports as critical economic infrastructure, the berth facilities usually deteriorate due to heavy loading, unloading, aging, environmental weather conditions, marine growths, and lack of efficient maintenance management. Marine berths require proactive maintenance management to limit deterioration and defects as no berth facility is maintenance-free. Thus, delay in carrying out maintenance work for the marine berths can be devastating to the operational process involving ship entry, loading, and unloading operations. The aim of this research is to coordinate both operations work, and maintenance works that take place inside the berth of a local industrial port in Saudi Arabia, by developing a novel framework that integrates both works without affecting the efficiency and functionality of the berth. The study focused on defining the operational process of the port and identifying the elements with direct and indirect effects. In addition to determining the priority for the entry of ships inside the berth, it also identified the factors involved in designing a framework that included maintenance work as a component of the monthly berth occupancy schedule. By applying a mathematical model, a framework was established, which includes all the important elements of the process. As a result of the mathematical method formulation process, a database was designed that organizes and coordinates the operations of all berths within the port. This creates time to carry out the required maintenance work monthly as well as ease of coordination with the contractors responsible for the implementation of those works.

  • 중국은 1979년부터 본격적으로 시장경제체제를 도입함으로써 급격한 경제성장을 이루었는데, 본고는 저임금과 중국정부의 적극적인 외자유치정책을 활용하기 위해 밀려들어온 외국인투자에 어떤 요인들이 영향을 미쳤는지를 검토하기 위해 1979년부터 2013년까지의 패널데이터를 이용해서 각 성·시의 고유한 특성까지 활용하는 실증분석을 시도한다. 실증분석을 위해 본고는 확률효과모형, 고정효과모형, Pooled OLS, 그리고 확률계수모형을 사용하는데, Pooled OLS와 확률계수모형의 결과는 본 연구의 분석결과와 비교를 위해서 제시된다. Hausman' test 결과 Random Effect Model보다는 Fixed Effect Model이 더 효율적인 분석결과를 제시하는 것으로 나타나 이를 근거로 중국정부에 대한 정책적 시사점을 제시한다. 분석결과는 FDI유입에 각 성·시의 지역소득수준, 자본량, 통신비는 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 고속도로는 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타난다.

The Opportunities and Challenges of Implementing BEAM Plus in Hong Kong from the Perspectives of Government and Developers

  • Due to the enhancing environmental concerns worldwide with the need of increasing demand for sustainability of building design, maintenance and operation, key stakeholders including the government and developers in many countries strike for the benefits in implementing the green design and building concepts in constructing, infrastructure as well as the buildings. Different countries have their standards or certifications for green buildings while the adoption rate of BEAM-Plus in HK is relatively less compared with other developed countries such as Europe, USA and Japan. Therefore, in the present research, BEAM-Plus, the beginning assessment method of green standard implemented in HK, will be mainly discussed. Current situation of BEAM-Plus implementation in HK will be reviewed and then adopt a systematic approach via literature review and research paper, questionnaire with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to depict the opportunities and challenges from the perspective of government and developers regarding implementing BEAM-Plus in HK and thus investigate the implementation gaps. It is found that for both the macro level of opportunity and challenge, the most important criterion is political, in which the weighting value are 0.3114 and 0.2321 respectively. It is obvious that government plays a critical and significant role in affecting the development of BEAM plus. Technological difficulty is also an important factor that challenging and hindering the implementation of BEAM plus, the weighting value is 0.2194 under challenge hierarchy. More experts and professionals should be imported to Hong Kong to enhance the technique is building green buildings. At the end of this paper, solutions and actions will also be suggested and concluded in alleviating the challenges. Findings from this research can guide developers to consider adopting green elements, government and Green Building Council in HK to review green buildings' policy.

공공도서관 서지데이터의 품질 제고 방안 (Improving the Quality of Bibliographic Data in Public Libraries: Focusing on Public Libraries in Busan Metropolitan City)

  • 부산지역에서는 2020년 대표도서관을 중심으로 모든 도서관이 공동으로 사용할 통합도서관시스템(ILS)을 구축하고, 지역 내 49개 공공도서관과 103개 공립작은도서관의 서지데이터를 통합하였다. 그러나 각 도서관은 여전히 개별적으로 서지데이터를 구축하고 있고, 각 도서관에서 구축한 서지데이터는 물리적으로만 통합되어 있을 뿐 통합환경을 활용한 업무효율이나 데이터의 고품질화를 이루지 못하고 있다. 이러한 배경에서, 이 연구는 부산지역 공공도서관의 서지데이터 구축체계와 품질을 분석하고 통합환경에 적합한 새로운 실행전략을 제안하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 (1) 부산지역 공공도서관에서 서지데이터를 구축하는 방식을 조사하고, (2) 구축된 서지데이터의 품질을 객관적으로 분석하였으며, (3) 발견된 주요 문제점을 토대로 4가지 실행전략을 제안하였다. 이 연구에서 제안하는 실행전략은 서지데이터의 품질 제고 뿐만 아니라 업무효율과 데이터 공유를 위한 기반 구축을 동시에 실현하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.

고정산란체 기반 시계열 영상레이더 간섭기법을 활용한 부산 대심도 지하 고속화도로 건설 구간의 지반 안정성 분석 (Time-Series Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Based on Permanent Scatterers Used to Analyze Ground Stability Near a Deep Underground Expressway Under Construction in Busan, South Korea)

  • Assessing ground stability is critical to the construction of underground transportation infrastructure. Surface displacement is a key indicator of ground stability, and can be measured using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). This study measured time-series surface displacement using permanent scatterer InSAR applied to Sentinel-1 SAR images acquired from January 2017 to June 2023 for the area around a deep underground expressway under construction to connect Mandeok-dong and Centum City in Busan, South Korea. Regions of seasonal subsidence and uplift were identified, as were regions with severe subsidence after summer 2022. To evaluate stability of the ground in the construction area, the mean displacement velocity, final surface displacement, cumulative surface displacement, and difference between minimum and maximum surface displacement were analyzed. Considering the time-series surface displacement characteristics of the study area, the difference between minimum and maximum surface displacement since June 2022 was found to be the most suitable parameter for evaluating ground stability. The results identified highly unstable ground in the construction area as being to the north of the mid-lower reaches of the Oncheon-cheon River and to the west of the Suyeong River at the point where both rivers meet, with the difference between minimum and maximum surface displacement of 40~60 mm.

Developing girder distribution factors in bridge analysis through B-WIM measurements: An empirical study

  • The safety of bridges are critical in our transportation infrastructure. Bridge design and analysis require complex structural analysis procedures to ensure their safety and stability. One common method is to calculate the maximum moment in the girders to determine the appropriate bridge section. Girder distribution factors (GDFs) provide a simpler approach for performing this analysis. A GDF is a ratio between the response of a single girder and the total response of all girders in the bridge. This paper explores the significance of GDFs in bridge analysis and design, including their importance in the evaluation of existing bridges. We utilized Bridge Weigh-in-motion (B-WIM) measurements of five simple supported girder bridge in Indonesia to develop a simple GDF provisions for the Indonesia's bridge design code. The B-WIM measurements enable us to know each girder strain as a response due to vehicle loading as the vehicle passes the bridge. The calculated GDF obtained from the B-WIM measurements were compared with the code-specified GDF and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) bridge design specification. Our study found that the code specified GDF was adequate or conservative compared to the GDF obtained from the B-WIM measurements. The proposed GDF equation correlates well with the AASHTO LRFD bridge design specification. Developing appropriate provisions for GDFs in Indonesian bridge design codes can provides a practical solution for designing girder bridges in Indonesia, ensuring safety while allowing for easier calculations and assessments based on B-WIM measurements.
