The spanwise flow structure around a rigid smooth circular cylinder model in cross-flow has been investigated based on the experimental data obtained from a series of wind tunnel tests. Surface pressures were collected at five spanwise locations along the cylinder over a Reynolds number range of $1.14{\times}15^5$ to $5.85{\times}10^5$, which covered sub-critical, single-bubble and two-bubble regimes in the critical range. Separation angles were deduced from curve fitted to the surface pressure data. In addition, spanwise correlations and power spectra analyses were employed to study the spatial structure of flow. Results at different spanwise locations show that the transition into single-bubble and two-bubble regimes could occur at marginally different Reynolds numbers which expresses the presence of overlap regions in between the single-bubble regime and its former and later regimes. This indicates the existence of three-dimensional flow around the circular cylinder in cross-flow, which is also supported by the observed cell-like surface pressure patterns. Relatively strong spanwise correlation of the flow characteristics is observed before each transition within the critical regime, or formation of first and second separation-bubbles. It is also noted that these organized flow structures might lead to greater overall aerodynamic forces on a circular cylinder in cross-flow within the critical Reynolds number regime.

Henry-Fauske critical flow model was incorporated into TRAC-PF1 to correct some errors in the original TRAC-PFI critical flow model. Henry-Fouske mode1 was numerically implemented and tested against steady-state steam-water experimental data. The model was incorporated into TRAC-PFI and code assessment against Marviken Critical Flow Tests 15 and 24 was carried out. Calculations using RELAP5/MOD3 were also made for comparison. Ten cases were calculated each test and sensitivity study on nodalization as well as critical flow or model was performed Stand-alone numerical model test and code assessment were done for verification and validation of code modification. Calculation results show that the modified version of TRAC-PF1 has a capability to model critical flow correctly in various conditions.
Compressible gas flow through a convergent-divergent nozzle is choked at the nozzle throat under a certain critical pressure ratio, and then being no longer dependent on the pressure change in the downstream flow field. In practical, the flow field at the divergent part of the critical nozzle can affect the effective critical pressure ratio. In order to investigate details of flow field through a critical nozzle, the present study solves the axisymmetric, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations. The diameter of the nozzle throat is D=8.26mm and the half angle of the diffuser is changed between $2^{\circ}\;and\;10^{\circ}$ Computational results are compared with the previous experimental ones. The results obtained show that the divergence angle is significantly influences the critical pressure ratio and the present computations predict the experimented discharge coefficient and critical pressure ratio with a good accuracy. It is also found that a nozzle with the half angle of $4^{\circ}$ nearly predicts the theoretical critical pressure ratio.
In order to investigate the operating characteristics of a supersonic steam ejector, the axisymmetric, compressible, Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes computations are performed using a finite volume method. The secondary and back pressures of the ejector system with a second throat are changed to investigate their effects on the suction mass flow. Three operation modes of the steam ejector system, the critical mode, subcritical mode and back flow mode, are discussed to predict the critical suction mass flow. The present computations are validated with some experimental results. The secondary and back pressures of the supersonic steam ejector significantly affect the critical suction mass flow. The present computations predict the experimented critical mass flow with fairly good accuracy. A good correlation is obtained for the critical suction mass flow. The present results show that provided the primary nozzle configuration and secondary pressure are known, we can predict the critical mass flow with good accuracy.
This paper explains how to correctly measure the drag coefficient of a circular cylinder in wind tunnels with large blockage ratios and for the sub-critical to the super-critical flow regimes. When dealing with large blockage ratios, the drag has to be corrected for wall constraints. Different formulations for correcting blockage effect are compared for each flow regime based on drag measurements of smooth circular cylinders performed in a wind tunnel for three different blockage ratios. None of the correction model known in the literature is valid for all the flow regimes. To optimize the correction and reduce the scatter of the results, different correction models should be combined depending on the flow regime. In the sub-critical regime, the best results are obtained using Allen and Vincenti's formula or Maskell's theory with ${\varepsilon}$=0.96. In the super-critical regime, one should prefer using Glauert's formula with G=0.6 or the model of Modi and El-Sherbiny. The change in the formulations appears at the flow transition with a variation of the wake pattern when passing from sub-critical to super-critical flow regimes. This parameter being not considered in the known blockage corrections, these theories are not valid for all the flow regimes.
Gas flow through orifice is encountered in many diverse fields of engineering applications. In order to investigate the critical gas flow through an orifice system, a computational analysis is performed using axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations which are numerically solved by a fully implicit finite volume method. In the present study, the discharge coefficients of two different types of orifices which are a straight-bore orifice and a sharp-edged orifice, are predicted to obtain the critical flow conditions. The present CFD data are compared with the previous experimental results. The present computational results show that the critical mass flow rate through orifice is well predicted and it is a strong function of Reynolds number. The discharge coefficient increases with the orifice diameter.
An experimental study on transient critical heat flux (CHF) under flow coastdown has been performed for the water flow in a non-uniformly heated vertical annulus under low flow and a wide range of pressure conditions. The objectives of this study are to systematically investigate the effect of the flow transient on the CHF and to compare the transient CHF with steady-state CHF The transient CHF experiments have been performed for three kinds of flow transient modes based on the coastdown data of a nuclear power plant reactor coolant pump. At the same inlet subcooling, system pressure and heat flux, the effect of the initial mass flux on the critical mass flux can be negligible. However, the effect of the initial mass flux on the time-to- CHF becomes large as the heat flux decreases. The critical mass flux has the largest value for slow flow reduction rate. There is a pressure effect on the ratio of the transient CHF data to steady-state CHF data. Except under low system pressure conditions, the flow transient CHF was revealed to be conservative compared with the steady-state CHF data. Bowling CHF correlation and thermal hydraulic system code MARS show promising results for the prediction of CHF occurrence .

The two-phase turbulent flow past an interface-piercing circular cylinder is studied using a high-fidelity orthogonal curvilinear grid solver with a Lagrangian dynamic subgrid-scale model for large-eddy simulation and a coupled level set and volume of fluid method for air-water interface tracking. The simulations cover the sub-critical and critical and post critical regimes of the Reynolds and sub and super-critical Froude numbers in order to investigate the effect of both dimensionless parameters on the flow. Significant changes in flow features near the air-water interface were observed as the Reynolds number was increased from the sub-critical to the critical regime. The interface makes the separation point near the interface much delayed for all Reynolds numbers. The separation region at intermediate depths is remarkably reduced for the critical Reynolds number regime. The deep flow resembles the single-phase turbulent flow past a circular cylinder, but includes the effect of the free-surface and the limited span length for sub-critical Reynolds numbers. At different Froude numbers, the air-water interface exhibits significantly changed structures, including breaking bow waves with splashes and bubbles at high Froude numbers. Instantaneous and mean flow features such as interface structures, vortex shedding, Reynolds stresses, and vorticity transport are also analyzed. The results are compared with reference experimental data available in the literature. The deep flow is also compared with the single-phase turbulent flow past a circular cylinder in the similar ranges of Reynolds numbers. Discussion is provided concerning the limitations of the current simulations and available experimental data along with future research.

Critical nozzle has been frequently employed to measure the flow rate of various gases, but hydrogen gas, especially being at high-pressure condition, was not nearly dealt with the critical nozzle due to treatment danger. According to a few experimental data obtained recently, it was reported that the discharge coefficient of hydrogen gas through the critical nozzle exceeds unity in a specific range of Reynolds number. No detailed explanation on such an unreasonable value was made, but it was vaguely inferred as real gas effects. For the purpose of practical use of high-pressure hydrogen gas, systematic research is required to clarify the critical nozzle flow of high-pressure hydrogen gas. In the present study, a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method has been applied to predict the critical nozzle flow of high-pressure hydrogen gas. Redlich-Kwong equation of state that take account for the forces and volume of molecules of hydrogen gas were incorporated into the axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations. A fully implicit finite volume scheme was used to numerically solve the governing equations. The computational results were validated with some experimental data available. The results show that the coefficient of discharge coefficient is mainly influenced by the compressibility factor and the specific heat ratio, which appear more remarkable as the inlet total pressure of hydrogen gas increases.
