  • We have studied the $TiO_2$ doping effects on the flux pinning behavior of an $MgB_2$ superconductor synthesized by the in-situ solid-state reaction. From the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled temperature dependences of magnetization, the reversible-irreversible transition of $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ was determined in the H-T diagram (the temperature dependence of upper critical magnetic field and irreversibility line). For comparison, the similar measurements are also obtained from SiC-doped $MgB_2$. The critical current density was estimated from the width of hysteresis loops in the framework of Bean's model at different temperatures. The obtained results manifest that nano-scale $TiO_2$ inclusions served as effective pinning centers and lead to the enhanced upper critical field and critical current density. It was concluded that the grain boundary pinning mechanism was realized in a $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ superconductor.

  • Bi-2223 superconductor is known as one of the candidates for practical superconducting wires. Ag-sheathed Bi-2223 superconducting wires were fabricated using the powder-in-tube(PIT) method. When the 19-filaments wire was immersed in liquid nitrogen(77K), maximum critical current density Jc of 62 A/$mm_2$ at 0T was achieved. The critical current density has been shown to depend on the mechanical properties such as tensile stress and bending strain in Ag-sheathed Bi-2223 superconducting wires. The tensile strain for Jc degradation onset was in the range of 0.12~0.3%. In the case of 19-filaments wire, the bending strain is estimated to be smaller than 0.3% for the reasonable Jc value. The observed degradation of the critical current density due to strain effect is inevitable and can be attributed to the formation of microcracks within the superconducting core.

  • Superconductor wire fabricated by electrophoresis showed its critical current density depended on parameters such as applied voltage and deposition time. Substrate and suspension solutions. and its properties are also important parameters. When same optimal parameter and condition was used, deposition density of superconductor film affect directly its critical current density. In this study, therefore, electrophoretic deposition technique was utilized for a densification of YBCO superconducting wire, and researches on electrophoretic suspension solutions and additive were experimentally performed for an improvement of the critical current density of fabricated electrophoretically superconducting wire. The samples fabricated in the solution with the additive, 8 vol.% of 1% PEG(1000), showed the highest critical current density.

  • The stability of superconducting wires was studied by considering temperature and magnetic field. We measured critical current density of $Nb_3Sn$ tape at 4.2 K, 12 K, 13 K and 14 K in various field. The critical current density at 4.2 K, 6 T is 16.5 times higher than at 12 K, 6 T. We expressed the critical current density as a function of temperature and magnetic field, expanding on work by Hampshire, et al.

  • Critical current(Ic) degradation of HTS tapes after bending is one of the hottest issues in HTS development and application studies. Many people are measuring Ic degradations for effect of bending radius. However even if the bending radius is larger than the breaking radius a HTS tapes can be damaged by repetitive bending, which is unavoidable in the winding processes. Therefore, We studied the Ic degradation after repetitive bending. at 77K with self-field, of Bi-2223 tapes processed by "Powder-in-Tube" technique, which was made by America Superconductor Corporation(AMSC) and superconductiing tapes that strain is imposed measured critical current by temperature difference of L$N_2$ and normal temperature. Like this, critical current could measure that degradation about 1~3% by temperature difference. These results will amount the most important basis data in power electric machine of superconductivity cable, magnet, etc that winding work is require.

  • The improvement of critical current property as well as the mechanical property is important for the application. The improvement of the critical current can be achieved by forming the nano size defect working as a flux pining center inside the superconductor. The nano size defect can be effectively formed by using neutron iradiation. All properties of most of materials after irradition become bad On the contrary, the critical current property of the superconductor is largely improved after irradiation.

  • The relations between tensile stresses and critical current densities (J$_c$) of coated conductors were measured. Around 320 MPa of tensile stress, the critical current densities of coated conductor fabricated on pure Ni tape were reduced to zero at 77K, where J$_c$ for zero stress was order of 10$^5$A/cm. The critical tensile stress was much enhanced for the coated conductors fabricated on NiCr alloy tapes. However fabrication conditions for the growth on such alloys are much different from those on the pure Ni and it was not easy to get good textures and large critical currents. The detailed fabrication methods on those alloys will be presented.

  • The possibility of suppressing critical speeds by using electromagnetic actuators (EMAs) is assessed experimentally in this paper. The system studied is composed of a horizontal flexible shaft supported by two ball bearings at one end and one roller bearing that is located in a squirrel cage at the other end. Four identical EMAs supplied with constant current are utilized. The EMAs associated to the squirrel cage constitutes the hybrid bearing. Results obtained, show that the constant current, when applied to the EMAs, produces a shift of the first critical speed toward lower values. Moreover, the application of constant current for a speed interval around the critical speed enables a smooth run-up or run-down without crossing any resonance.
