The Critical size of artificially induced micro-holes in 0.17%, 0.36% Carbon steel Specimens with Spheroidized Cementite and in 0.17% carbon steel specimens with martensite structure is compared with annealed pre-crack in order to discuss the physical meaning of the fatigue limit and evaluation of the tolerant micro flaw size at the stress level of the fatigue limit. Results obtained were summarized as follows; (1) In this study, non-propagating crack length of Smooth specimen and critical pre-crack length (lc) is coincide. (2) In the carbon steels with spheroidized cementite structure, critical pre-crack length (lc) and allowable micro-hole size (dc) is coincide each other at the fatigue limit level. (3) It has been published that there exists a particular size of micro-hole which has no effect on the fatigue limit. In this study, the micro-hole of critical size can be regarded as equivalent to a tolerant micro flaw which would not reduce the fatigue limit.
Nozzle corner cracks present at the intersection of reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) and inlet or outlet nozzles have been a persistent problem for a number of years. The fracture analysis of such nozzle corner cracks is very important and critical for the efficient design and assessment of the structural integrity of RPVs. This paper aims to perform an engineering critical assessment of RPVs with nozzle corner cracks subjected to several transients accompanied by pressurized thermal shocks. The critical crack size of the RPV model with nozzle corner cracks under transient loading is evaluated on failure assessment curve. In particular, the influence of cladding on the crack initiation of nozzle corner crack under thermal transients is studied. The influence of primary internal pressure and secondary thermal stress on the stress field at nozzle corner and SIF at crack front is analyzed. Finally, the influence of different crack size and crack shape on the final critical crack size is analyzed.

It is not clearly known how surface defects or inclusions of a medium carbon steel affect a fatigue strength. In this study, we used SM35C specimens with spheroidized cementite structure to eliminate dependence of micro structure of fatigue crack. The investigation was carried out by behavior of crack closure at non-propagation crack and effect of the fatigue limit according to the artificial defects size. Experimental findings are obtained as follows : (1) Fatigue crack initiation point of medium carbon steel with spheroidized cementite structure is at the surface defects. (2) Non-propagating crack length of smooth specimen is equal to the critical size of defect. (3) Considering the opening and closure behavior of fatigue crack, the defect shape results in various crack opening displacement, while it does not affects the fatigue limit level of medium carbon steel with spheroidized cementite structure. (4) The critical length of the non-propagation crack of smooth specimen is the same as critical size of defect in transient area which determines threshold condition in steel with spheroidized cementite structure.
The drive pulley, which is employed for loading and unloading raw materials in a steel mill, is usually manufactured by use of various welding processes. In this study the weldment in the pulley, in which TIG and $CO_2$ welding processes are used, has been analyzed from view point of fracture mechanics. Fracture toughness tests have been performed according to ASTM E813. A servo-hydraulic testing machine (10kN) has been employed. Also the crack propagation tests (Mode I) have been performed with compact tension specimen in compliance with ASTM E647. To predict the critical crack size in the weldment, finite element stress analysis for the drive pulley under real operating conditions have been performed. In addition, the residual stresses at the weldment and in heat-affected zone have been obtained by hole drilling method. The planar critical crack size have been predicted for the drive pulley by considering the stress analysis results and the residual stresses due to welding process. For the drive pulley considered in this study, it has been concluded that the most important factor in determining the critical crack size is the welding residual stress in the transverse direction. Also the effect of stress concentration at the root of the weldment have been noticeable. For the planar crack, the fatigue crack growth life from an initial crack size of 2mm to the critical crack size obtained as in the above have been predicted. The predicted lives were between 55, 900 and 72, 000 cycles depending on the shape of the elliptical crack. The predicted lives were in fairly good agreement for the drive pulley considered in this study.
Concrete is a heterogeneous material containing many weaknesses such as micro-cracks, pores and grain boundaries. The crack growth mechanism and failure behavior of concrete structures depend on the plastic deformation created by these weaknesses. In this article the non-linear finite element method is used to analyze the effect of presence of micro pore near a crack tip on both of the characteristics of crack tip plastic zone (its shape and size) and crack growth properties (such as crack growth length and crack initiation angle) under pure shear loading. The FE Code Franc2D/L is used to carry out these objectives. The effects of the crack-pore configurations and the spacing between micro pore and pre-excising crack tip on the characteristics of crack tip plastic zone and crack growth properties is highlighted. Based on the obtained results, the relative distance between the crack tip and the micro pore affects in very significant way the shape and the size of the crack tip plastic zone. Furthermore, crack growth length and crack initiation angle are mostly influenced by size and shape of plastic zone ahead of crack tip. Also the effects of pore decrease on the crack tip by variation of pore situation from linear to perpendicular configuration. The critical position for a micro pore is in front of the crack tip.

An engineering method is suggested to calculate the applied load versus crack extension in the elastic-plastic fracture. The condition for an increment of crack extension is set by a critical increment of crack-up opening displacement(CTOD). The ratio of the CTOD increment to the incremental crack extention is a critical crack-tip opening angle(CTOA), assumed to be constant for a material of a given thickness. The Dugdale model of crack-tip deformation in an infinite plate is applied to the method, and a complete solution for crack extension and crack instability is obtained. For finite-size specimens of arbitrary geometry in general yielding, an approximate generalization of the Dugdale model is suggested so that the approximation approaches the small-scale yielding solution in a low applied load and the finite-element solution in a large applied load. Maximum load is calculated so that an applied load attains either a limit load on an unbroken ligament or a peak load during crack extension. The proposed method was applied to three-point bend specimens of a carbon steel SM45C in various sizes. Reasonable agreements are found between calculated maximum loads and experimental failure loads. Therefore, the method can be a viable alternative to the J-R curve approach in the elastic-plastic fracture analysis.
The vulnerability of concrete to its environment is significantly dependent on the fact that concrete is a porous material. For well-consolidated and well-cured concrete, its service life is a very long and an entrance of aggressive substance might be only pores. However, for cracked concrete, cracks should be preferential channel for the penetration of aggressive substance such as chloride ions. The effect of crack on chloride penetration depends on its size for example, crack width and crack depth. The purpose of this study is examining the effect of crack width and crack depth on chloride penetration. In order to visualize chloride penetration via cracks, RCM (rapid chloride migration) testing is accomplished. Crack width is examined using an optical microscope and CMOD value is used to estimate average crack width. From the examination on the trend of chloride diffusion coefficients of concrete specimens with various crack widths, a critical crack width and a critical crack depth are found out.
Derailment due to wheel failure would cause a tremendous social and economical cost in service operation. It is necessary to evaluate quantitatively the safety with respect to high-speed train. Although the safety of railway wheel has been ensured by an regular inspection, all critical defects cannot be detected in inspection cycles and the wheel has been replaced because a defect quickly become critical for safety. Therefore, it is important to calculate quantitatively the fracture limit and remnant life of damaged railway wheel in wheel-rail system. In present paper, the critical crack size of wheel for high-speed train is simulated based on fracture scenario and the safety of wheel is evaluated.

As the variables affecting the fatigue behavior have uncertainty, the fatigue crack propagation is stochastic in nature. Therefore, the fatigue life prediction is critical for the design and the maintenance of many structural components. In this study, fatigue experiments are conducted on the specimens of magnesium alloy under the different thicknesses of specimen. The effects of specimen thickness on the probability distribution of the fatigue crack propagation life and the crack size are estimated experimentally. The probability distribution of the crack size and the fatigue life for different specimen thicknesses are investigated by Anderson-Darling test and the best fit for those probability distributions are also presented.

The fracture behavior of glass/epoxy plain woven composite plates containing circular holes is experimentally investigated to examine the effects of hole size and specimen width on notched tensile strength. It is shown in this paper that the characteristic length according to the point stress criterion depends on the hole size and specimen width. For predicting the notched tensile strength, a modified failure criterion is developed. An excellent agreement is found between the experimental results and the analytical prediction of modified failure criterion. The notched strength and the characteristic length have an increase and decrease relations. When the unstable fracture occured, the critical crack length equivalent for the damage zone size at the edge of hole is about twice the characteristic length. The critical energy release rate G$_{c}$ is independent of hole size(0.03 .leq. 2R/W .leq. 0.5) under the same specimen width. However G$_{c}$ increases with an increase in specimen width which can be explained by stress relaxation due to the notch insensitivity.ity.
