  • A study on the measurement of critical heat flux using the transient inverse heat conduction method in spray cooling was performed. The inverse heat conduction method estimates the surface heat flux or temperature using a measured interior temperature history. The effects of the measuring time interval and location of temperature measurement on the measurement of critical heat flux were primarily investigated. The following results were obtained. The estimated critical heat flux decreased as the time interval of temperature measurement increased. Meanwhile, the effect of measurement location on critical heat flux was not significant. It was also found, from the experimental results, that the critical superheat increased as the measurement location of thermocouple neared the heat transfer surface.

  • The critical heat flux (CHF) on a heat transfer surface with nanostructures is known to be significantly better than that on flat surfaces. Several physical mechanisms have been proposed to explain this phenomenon. However, almost all studies conducted so far have been qualitative, and a generalized theory has not yet been established. In this study, we developed a quantitative mechanism for CHF enhancement on a surface with nanostructures, based on vapor recoil and surface adhesion forces. We focused on the increase in the length of the triple contact line owing to the formation of nanostructures and the adhesion force between them and the liquid.

  • The critical heat flux of spray cooling were measured on the test surface of 10 mm diameter made by stainless steel. The experiments were carried out for the droplet-flow-rate of $0.00002{\sim}0.003m^3/(m^2s)$ and liquid subcooling temperature of $40{\sim}75^{\circ}C$. Experimental results showed that the critical heat flux of spray cooling increased remarkably with the increase of droplet-flow-rate. Meanwhile, the effect of liquid subcooling on critical heat flux of spray cooling appeared weakly under the present experimental conditions. In additions, correlation between the dimensionless critical heat flux and Weber number based on droplet-floe-rate was developed for experimental results.

  • Experimental investigation was carried out on the CHF(Critical Heat Flux) under downward flow condition in narrow rectangular channels simulating subchannel of plate-type-fuel for JRTR(Jordan Research and Training Reactor). The experiments covers the license requirement of the research reactor. Two test sections used in this study simulate full scale subchannels for fission moly uranium target and plate-type-fuel, respectively. From the experimental results, the parameters affecting on the CHF are investigated. By using experimental data, the existing CHF prediction models were evaluated. Finally, the applicability of correlations were analysed to predict CHF in the narrow rectangular channel under the downward flow condition.

  • There is an increasing need to understand the thermal-hydraulic phenomena, including the critical heat flux (CHF), in narrow rectangular channels and consider these in system design. The CHF mechanism under a saturated flow boiling condition involves the depletion of the liquid film of an annular flow. To predict this type of CHF, the previous representative liquid film dryout models (LFD models) were studied, and their shortcomings were reviewed, including the assumption that void fraction or quality is constant at the boundary condition for the onset of annular flow (OAF). A new LFD model was proposed based on the recent constitutive correlations for the droplet deposition rate and entrainment rate. In addition, this LFD model was applied to predict the CHF in vertical narrow rectangular channels that were uniformly heated. The predicted CHF showed good agreement with 284 pieces of experimental data, with a mean absolute error of 18. 1 % and root mean square error of 22.9 %.

  • In order to study heat transfer characteristics of spray cooling for the purpose of uniform and soft cooling of high temperature surface a series of experiments for a hot horizontal copper flat plate was performed by downflow spray water using flat spray nozzle. Cooling curves were mea-sured under the various experimental conditions of flow rates and temperatures of cooling water Surface temperature surface heat fluxes and heat transfer coefficients of horizontal upward-facing flat surface were calculated with cooling curves measured at each radial positions near the cooling surface by TDMA method. Generally heat transfer characteristics for spray cooling is simi-lar to boiling phenomenon of pool boiling. The minimum heat flux(MHF) appear at the surface temperature of about ${\Delta}Tsat=250^{\circ}C$ and the critical heat flux(CHF) appear at about ${\Delta}Tsat=250^{\circ}C$.

  • Water heat transfer experiments were carried out in a uniformly heated annulus with a wide range of pressure conditions. The local heat transfer coefficients for saturated water flow boiling have been measured just before the occurrence of the critical heat flux (CHF) along the length of the heated section. The trends of the measured heat transfer coefficients were quite different from the conventional understanding for the heat transfer of saturated flow boiling. This discrepancy was explained from the nucleate boiling in the liquid film of annular flow under high heat flux conditions.

  • 'Nanofluids' means suspension of common fluids with particles of the order of nanometers in size. The present research is an experimental study of critical heat flux (CHF) behavior in pool boiling of $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids under atmospheric pressure. CHF for pure water and $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids were respectively measured using disk-type copper block heater with 10mm diameter, and CHF of water with surfactant was also measured to consider the effect of surfactant used to disperse nanoparticle. The results show a large increase in CHF for $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids compared to pure water. After CHF occurred, heat flux in pool boiling for $water-TiO_2$ nanofluids was maintained in considerable value, but not for pure water.
