  • This study examined the effective uses of an ecosystem service value assessment in the fields of rural planning and development through archiving and reviewing/analyzing existing concepts, evaluation methods and prior examples of Ecosystem services. Based on land cover analysis, this study evaluated the usability changes in the ecosystem service value for a period spanning 1975 to 2000. The results from the countrywide data survey (with an exception of Jeju island) showed a 33.15% decrease in ESV by 2000. The total ESV represented 5,385 million USD in 1975, and 3,600 million USD in 2000 of the study area. In addition, the ecosystem service value with a scale of metro cities and provinces was also examined. The ESV of most regions decreased by 2000, but Daejeon and Kyeongnam, and Kyeongbuk provinces increased. The trends of year to year changes in the ESV were very diverse throughout the country. Jeonnam showed the smallest decrease, 747 million USD, which is 59% of the ESV in 1975. Nevertheless, the despite the regional differences in available natural resources, the natural resource assets value is ultimately determined by rural development policies and regional economic attributes. Therefore, an ecosystem service must be considered as an important criterion for rural planning and development policy.

  • An investigation on thermohydraulic stability of flow oscillations in the CANada Deuterium Uranium-600(CANDU-6) heat transport system has been conducted. Flow oscillations in reactor coolant loops, comprising two heat sources and two heat sinks in series, are possibly caused by the response of the pressure to extraction of fluid in two-phase region. This response consists of two contributions, one arising from mass and another from enthalpy change in the two-phase region. The system computer code used in the investigation os SOPHT, which is capable of simulating steady states as well as transients with varying boundary conditions. The model was derived by linearizing and solving one-dimensional, homogeneous single- and two-phase flow conservation equations. The mass, energy and momentum equations with boundary conditions are set up throughout the system in matrix form based on a node-link structure. Loop stability was studied under full power conditions with interconnecting the two compressible two phase regions in the figure-of-eight circuit. The dominant function of the interconnecting pipe is the transfer of mass between the two-phase regions. Parametric survey of loop stability characteristics, i. e., damping ratio and period, has been made as a function of geometrical parameters of the interconnection line such as diameter, length, height and orifice flow coefficient. The stability characteristics with interconnection line has been clarified to provide a simple criterion to be used as a guide in scaling of the pipe.

  • We present results of searching for the Very Low Luminosity Objects (VeLLOs; internal luminosity : $L_{int}$ < $0.1(d/140pc)^2\;L\odot$) in the Gould's Belt clouds using observations from 3.6 to 70 micron by the Spitzer Space Telescope. The clouds are California, Chamaeleon I, III, Musca, Lupus V, VI, Scorpius, Serpens, Corona Australis, Cepheus, and IC 5146 having the properties of active low-mass star-forming such as the Taurus cloud. The observing sensitivity of the Spitzer data is estimated to be about $L_{int}\;\geq\;5\times10^{-3}(d/140pc)^2\;L\odot$, a factor of 20 better than that of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). The observing data were processed by the c2d Legacy pipeline. As the criteria to select the VeLLOs, we slightly modified previous ones by Dunham et al. The most important criterion is a flux density at 70 micron that is directly converted to the internal luminosity. Also, we used additional criteria to remove the contamination of evolved stars and extragalaxies which have colors or SEDs very similar to YSOs. We identified a total of 64 new embedded VeLLO candidates with $L_{int}$ < $0.1(d/140pc)^2\;L\odot$, consisting of 8 in California, 15 in Chamaeleon-Musca, 13 in Scorpius-Lupus, 20 in Serpens, 3 in Corona Australis, 3 in Cepheus, and 2 in IC 5146. The classification of the spectral index (${\alpha}$) fitted to the shape of the Ks-24 micron SEDs shows most of VeLLO candidates (89%) are in types of Class I and Flat spectrum. We plot various diagrams based on their 2MASS-Spitzer bands colors and magnitudes to discuss properties of the VeLLOs. This search will lead us new adventure toward a future systematic study of the VeLLOs.

  • Introduction: Although shift work is an inevitable form of labor in modern society, it has been identified as a cause of many ailments, such as cancer and musculoskeletal disorders. Meanwhile, previous studies have also shown that musculoskeletal disorders account for a large proportion of total industrial accidents and a high prevalence rate of these ailments has been found in shift workers. Methods: Among the respondents to the 5th Korea Working Conditions Survey(KWCS) 3,916 shift workers(2,658 of whom have not experienced musculoskeletal pain and 1,258 who have experienced musculoskeletal pain) were asked how the work regularity of shift workers affected musculoskeletal pain. Results: The results of a dichotomous logistic regression by correcting the demographic characteristics of the study subjects showed a lower prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in the 'High' regularity group compared to the 'Intermediate' regularity group for the criterion 'Regularity of Time Fixation'. A lower prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was shown in the 'High' and 'Moderate' regularity group compared to the 'Very Low' regularity one. Conclusions: Based on these findings, it was found that musculoskeletal pain occurs less when the work regularity of shift workers is 'Very high' or 'Intermediate', and the effect of working regularity on musculoskeletal pain varies for each shift type of work. It is deemed that more precise observation and understanding are required when managing the working environment of shift workers, and further study of regarding this issue is needed.

  • The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) measures the extent to which individuals feel, accept, and respond to their own bodies in a positive manner. Given the research need to explore positive body image and its associations with various sociocultural factors and related consequences among individuals with various cultural backgrounds, several studies have established the psychometric properties and factor structures of the BAS-2 in different languages and samples with different characteristics. The current study investigated the psychometric properties and measurement invariance of a Korean version of the BAS-2 in an older Korean adult population (599 older Korean adults with the average age of 70 years). Data were collected using both online and offline (paper-based) survey questionnaires. The results of exploratory factor analyses and confirmatory factor analysis evidenced the unidimensional factor structure and measurement invariance of the Korean BAS-2 among older Korean men and women, after dropping item 1. Scalar invariance was supported across gender, and men and women did not significantly differ in observed mean scores of the Korean BAS-2. The results also supported good convergent validity and criterion validity. Incremental validity was demonstrated by predicting self-esteem over and above measures of age, BMI, subjective financial and health status, body esteem, and ageism. High internal reliability and test-retest reliability over a 2-week period were confirmed. Overall, the results of this study support the reliable use of a Korean BAS-2 to measure positive body image among older Koreans after excluding item 1.
