  • For scoring polygraph charts, the Prosecutors' Office of the Republic of Korea uses a consistency criterion in which an elevated signal on one physiological channel is scored as a deceptive response only if the signal is also elevated on other channels. In the current study, the effects of this scoring criterion on reliability and accuracy (validity) of polygraph scores were assessed. Polygraph tests on 26 suspects were evaluated twice by the same examiners. The examiners used the consistency criterion in the first evaluation. In the second evaluation, the examiners were prevented from using the criterion; the signals from each physiological channel were separated and randomly arranged before they were rescored by the same examiner. Reliability was assessed by the variation among the scores for each suspect. Accuracy was assessed by establishing a standard, based on a Latent Class Analysis model, using the results of polygraph tests on each of 182 additional suspects. Reliability and accuracy were both improved by the use of the consistency criterion which therefore was recommended.

  • The generalized Hoek-Brown (GHB) failure criterion developed by Hoek et al. (2002) is a nonlinear function which defines a stress condition at failure of rock mass. The relevant strength parameter values are systematically determined using the GSI value. Since GSI index is a value quantifying the condition of in-situ rock mass, the GHB criterion is a practical failure condition which can take into the consideration of in-situ rock mass quality. Considering that most rock mechanics engineers are familiar with the linear Mohr-Coulomb criterion and that many rock engineering softwares incorporate Mohr-Coulomb criterion, the equations for the equivalent friction angle and cohesion were also proposed along with the release of the GHB criterion. The proposed equations, however, fix the lower limit of the minor principal stress range, where the linear best-fitting is performed, with the tensile strength of the rock mass. Therefore, if the tensile stress is not expected in the domain of analysis, the calculated equivalent friction angle and cohesion based on the equations in Hoek et al. (2002) could be less accurate. In order to overcome this disadvantage of the existing equations for equivalent friction angle and cohesion, this study proposes the analytical formula which can calculate optimal equivalent friction angle and cohesion in any minor principal stress interval, and verified the accuracy of the derived formula.

  • Since the generalized Hoek-Brown criterion (GHB) provides an efficient way of identifying its strength parameter values with the consideration of in-situ rock mass condition via Geological Strength Index (GSI), this criterion is recognized as one of the standard rock mass failure criteria in rock mechanics community. However, the nonlinear form of the GHB criterion makes its mathematical treatment inconvenient and limits the scope of its application. As an effort to overcome this disadvantage of the GHB criterion, the explicit approximate analytical equations for the minimum principal stress, which is associated with the maximum principal stress at failure, are formulated based on the Taylor polynomial approximation of the original GHB criterion. The accuracy of the derived approximate formula for the minimum principal stress is verified by comparing the resulting approximate minimum principal stress with the numerically calculated exact values. To provide an application example of the approximate formulation, the equivalent friction angle and cohesion for the expected plastic zone around a circular tunnel in a GHB rock mass are calculated by incorporating the formula for the approximate minimum principal stress. It is found that the simultaneous consideration of the values of mi, GSI and far-field stress is important for the accurate calculation of equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameter values of the plastic zone.

  • An adaptive bit-reduced mean absolute difference (ABRMAD) is presented as a criterion for the block-matching algorithm (BMA) to reduce the complexity of the VLSI Implementation and to improve the processing time. The ABRMAD uses the lower pixel resolution of the significant bits instead of full resolution pixel values to estimate the motion vector (MV) by examining the pixels Ina block. Simulation results show that the 4-bit ABRMAD has competitive mean square error (MSE)results and a half less hardware complexity than the MAD criterion, It has also better characteristics in terms of both MSE performance and hardware complexity than the Minimax criterion and has better MSE performance than the difference pixel counting(DPC), binary block-matching with edge-map(BBME), and bit-plane matching(BPM) with the same number of bits.

  • The criterion of zero-error probability provides a limitation on error probability functions being used for adaptive systems when the error samples are shifted by the influence of DC-bias noise. In this paper, we employ a bias term in the error distribution and propose a new criterion of the biased zero-error probability with error being zero. Also, by maximizing the proposed criterion on expanded filter structures, a supervised adaptive algorithm has been derived. From the simulation results of supervised equalization, the algorithm based on the proposed criterion yielded zero-centered and highly concentrated error samples without disturbance in the environments of strong impulsive and DC-bias noise.

  • This study aims to present the sensitivity analysis approach for multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method to reduce the uncertainty of weighting and performance values. This study focuses on two major problems of the uncertainty for MCDM method. The first major problem is how to determine the most critical criterion and the second is how to determine the most critical measure of performance. This study used the application of weighted sum method for water resources planning. The criticality degrees and the sensitivity coefficients of criterion and alternative are used. This results of sensitivity analysis can be applied to the general water resources planning in real.

  • Actual load acting on rail surface in the track is the combined mode loading due to the contact rolling load of the wheels. To investigate the fracture behavior on rail steel under combined modes I and II, fracture tests were performed by using the test jigs and fracture specimen which were designed by Richard. The analysis results of experimental fracture data were compared with various fracture criteria that have been introduced for determination of the crack propagation direction and the critical stress of fracture of a crack submitted to a mixed mode loading. From the results, it was shown that the actual crack propagation direction of rail steel agree with the crack propagation directions predicted by maximum tangential stress criterion and strain energy density criterion, and that fracture criterion follows principal strain criterion.

  • In addition to lightweight and moldable characteristics, polymeric foams possess an excellent energy absorbing capability that can be utilize for a wide range of commercial applications, especially in the crashworthiness of the automobiles. The purpose of the present study is to develop experimental methodology to characterize the pressure dependent yield behavior of the energy absorbing polymeric foams. For the compression test in a triaxial stress sate, a specially designed device was placed in a hydraulic press to produce and control oil pressure. For the test material, the polyurethane foams of two different densities were used. The displacement of the specimen, the load subjected to the specimen, and oil pressure applied to the specimen were measured and controlled. Stress strain curves and yield stresses for the four different oil pressure were obtained. It was found from the present experiments that the polyurethane foams exhibited significant increases in yield stress with applied pressure or mean normal stress. Based on this observation, a yield criteria which included the effect of the stress invariant were established for the polymeric foams. The obtained experimental constants which constituted the pressure-dependent yield criterion were verified.

  • The main goal of this paper is to provide the theoretical background for the fracture phenomena in marine structural steels. In this paper, various fracture criteria are theoretically investigated: shear failure criteria with constant failure strain and stress triaxiality-dependent failure strain (piecewise failure and Johnson-Cook criteria), forming limit curve failure criterion, micromechanical porosity failure criterion, and continuum damage mechanics failure criterion. It is obvious that stress triaxiality is a very important index to determine the failure phenomenon for ductile materials. Assuming a piecewise failure strain curve as a function of stress triaxiality, the numerical results coincide well with the test results for smooth and notched specimens, where low and high stress triaxialities are observed. Therefore, it is proved that a failure criterion with reliable material constants presents a plastic deformation process, as well as fracture initiation and evolution.
