This paper deals with the variability of short term creep rupture time based on previous creep rupture tests and the statistical methodology of the creep life prediction. The results of creep tests performed using constant uniaxial stresses at 600, 650, and $700^{\circ}C$ elevated temperatures were used for a statistical analysis of the inter-specimen variability of the short term creep rupture time. Even under carefully controlled identical testing conditions, the observed short-term creep rupture time showed obvious inter-specimen variability. The statistical aspect of the short term creep rupture time was analyzed using a Weibull statistical analysis. The effect of creep stress on the variability of the creep rupture time was decreased with an increase in the stress level. The effect of the temperature on the variability also decreased with increasing temperature. A long term creep life prediction method that considers this statistical variability is presented. The presented method is in good agreement with the Lason-Miller Parameter (LMP) life prediction method.
Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) has been widely used in long-span buildings because of its light weight and high transparency. This paper studies the short and long term creep behaviour of ETFE foil. A series of short-term creep and recovery tests were performed, in which the residual strain was observed. A long-term creep test of the ETFE foil was also performed over 110 days. A viscoelastic-plastic model was then established to describe the short-term creep and recovery behaviour. The model contains a traditional multi-Kelvin part and an added steady-flow component to represent the viscoelastic and viscoplastic behaviour, respectively. The model successfully fit the data for three stresses and six temperatures. Additionally, time-temperature equivalency was adopted to predict the long-term creep behaviour of ETFE foil. Horizontal shifting factors were determined from the process of shifting creep-curves at six temperatures. The long-term creep behaviours at three temperatures were predicted. Finally, the long-term creep test showed that the short-term creep test at identical temperatures insufficiently predicted additional creep behaviour, and the long-term test verified the horizontal shifting factors derived from the time-temperature equivalency.
The creep constants which are used to the reference stress equations of creep damage were obtained to type 316LN stainless steel, and their determining methods were described in detail. Typical Kachanov and Rabotnov(K-R) creep damage model was modified into the damage equations with reference stress concepts, and the modified equations were applied practically to type 316LN stainless steel. In order to determine the reference stress value, a series of high-temperature tensile tests and creep tests were accomplished at $550^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. By using the experimental creep data, the creep constants used in reference stress equations could be obtained to type 316LN stainless steel, and a creep curve on rupture strain was predicted. The reference stress concept on creep damage can be utilized easily as a design tool to predict creep life because the process, which is quantified by the measurement of voids or micro cracks during creep, is omitted.
Small punch-creep(SP-Creep) test technique has been applied for evaluating the creep characteristics for high temperature materials. However, in order to evaluate the damage and predict the remaining life, it is necessary to establish a quantitative correlation between SP-Creep and uniaxial-creep test results. This paper presents analytical and experimental results of useful correlation between SP-Creep and uniaxial-creep properties for 9Cr1MoVNb steel at $600{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ in terms of stress(load) and activation energy during creep deformation. Especially, the activation energy obtained from SP-Creep test is linearly related to that from uniaxial-creep test at $650^{\circ}C$ as follows: $Q_{sp-p}{\fallingdotseq}1.37\;Q_{TEN},\;Q_{sp-{\sigma}}{\fallingdotseq}1.53\;Q_{TEN}$.
Creep-fatigue crack growth models have been proposed employing $(C_t)_{avg}$ as a crack tip parameter characterizing the time-dependent crack growth. The basic assumptions made in these previous models were ideal creep reversal conditions such as no creep reversal and complete creep reversal condition. Due to this assumption, the applicability of the models was limited since they did not consider partial creep reversal condition which is usually observed in many engineering metals at high temperature. In this paper the creep reversal parameter, Temperature;$C_R$, which was defined by Grover, is critically evaluated to quantity the extent of partial creep reversal at the crack tip. This approach does not rely on any simplifying assumptions regarding the extent of the amount of creep reversal during the unloading part of a trapezoidal fatigue cycles. It is shown that the $(C_t)_{avg}$ value calculated for 9Cr steel agrees well with the experimentally measured one. It is argued that the extent of improvement is not significant when the result is compared with that of the conventional model which has an assumption of full creep reversal behavior.
An elastic-viscoplastic finite element analysis is performed to investigate detailed growth behavior of creep cracks and the numerical results are compared with experimental results. In Cr-Mo steel stress fields obtained from the crack growth method by mesh translation were compared with both cases that the secondary creep rate is only used as creep material property and the primary creep rate is included. Analytical stress fields, Riedel-Rice(RR) field, Hart-Hui-Riedel(HR) field and Prime(named in here) field, and the results obtained by numerical method were evaluated in details. Time vs. stress at crack tip was showed and crack tip stress fields were plotted. These results were compared with analytical stress fields. There is no difference of stress distribution at remote region between the case of 1st creep rate+2nd creep rate and the case of 2nd creep rate only. In case of slow velocity of crack growth, the effect of 1st creep rate is larger than the one of fast crack growth rate. Stress fields at crack tip region we, in order, Prime field, HR field and RR field from crack tip.
The relationship between the small-punch creep test and the conventional creep test was investigated experimentally using a method similar to that of the Monkman-Grant relationship. Uniaxial and small-punch creep rupture tests were carried out on 9Cr-2W ferritic steel (Commercial Grade 92 steel: X10CrWMoVNb 9-2) at elevated temperatures. From the relation derived in the same manner as the Monkman-Grant relation, a correlation between the displacement rate in response to the small-punch creep test and the strain rate in the uniaxial creep test was found, and the creep life was calculated using this relation. Furthermore, the failure modes of the small punch creep test specimens were investigated to show that the fracture was caused by creep.
Creep of concrete is the most dominating factor affecting time-dependent deformations of concrete structures. Especially, creep deformation for design and construction in prestressed concrete structures should be predicted accurately because of its close relation with the loss in prestree of prestressed concrete structures. Existing creep-prediction models for special applications contain several impractical factors such as the lack ok accuracy, the requirement of long-term test and the lack of versatility for change in material properties, ets., which should be improved. In order to improve those drawbacks, a methodology to modify the creep-prediction equation specified in current Korean concrete structures design standard (KCI-99), which underestimates creep of concrete and does not consider change of condition in mixture design, is proposed. In this study, short-term creep tests were carried out for early-age concrete within 28 days after loading and their test results on influencing factors in the equation are analysed. Then, the prediction equation was modified by using the early-age creep test results. The modified prediction equation was verified by comparing their results with results obtained from long-term creep test.
The short-term high temperature creep rupture behavior of Ni-based Alloy718 steels jointed by friction welding wasinvestigated at the elevated temperatures of 550 to $700^{\circ}C$ under constant stress conditions. The creep rupture characteristics such as creep stress, rupture time, steady state creep rate, and initial strain were evaluated. Creep stress has a quantitative correlation between creep rupture time and steady state creep rate. The stress exponents (n, m) of the experimental data at 550, 600, 650 and $700^{\circ}C$ were derived as 26.1, -22.4, 22.5, -18.5, 17.4, -14.3 and 6.9, -8.1, respectively. The stress exponents decreased with increasing creep temperature. The creep life prediction was derived by the Larson-Miller parameter (LMP) method and the result equation obtained is as follows: T(logtr+20)=-0.00148${\sigma}^2$-3.089${\sigma}$+23232. Finally, the results were compared with those of the base metal for Alloy718.
The long-term stability of rock engineering is significantly affected by the time-dependent deformation behavior of rock, which is an important mechanical property of rock for engineering design. Although the hard rocks show small creep deformation, it cannot be ignored under high-stress condition during deep excavation. The inner mechanism of creep is complicated, therefore, it is necessary to investigate the relationship between microscopic creep mechanism and the macro creep behavior of rock. Microscopic numerical modeling of sandstone creep was performed in the investigation. A numerical sandstone sample was generated and Parallel Bond contact and Burger's contact model were assigned to the contacts between particles in DEM simulation. Sensitivity analysis of the microscopic creep parameters was conducted to explore how microscopic parameters affect the macroscopic creep deformation. The results show that the microscopic creep parameters have linear correlations with the corresponding macroscopic creep parameters, whereas the friction coefficient shows power function with peak strength and Young's modulus, respectively. Moreover, the microscopic parameters were calibrated. The creep modeling curve is in good agreement with the verification test result. Finally, the creep curves under one-step loading and multi-step loading were compared. This investigation can act as a helpful reference for modeling rock creep behavior from a microscopic mechanism perspective.
