  • The hermetic reciprocating compressor driven by the BLDC motor rotating with variable speeds, is modelled and analyzed for dynamic characteristics. The governing equations of piston, connecting rod and crank-shaft of the reciprocating compression mechanism and characteristics of driving torque of the motor are obtained. Dynamic behavior of the crankshaft supported on 2 journal bearings is analyzed considering compression load and eccentric unbalance for the 4 rotating speeds of crankshaft. And. reaction forces generated from oil film in the journal bearings are analyzed under transient condition using Reynolds' equation. To take into account the dynamic characteristics depending on the variable rotating speeds, comparison on the dynamic behavior of crank-shaft is made for the 4 operating modes of the compressor. Results show that the magnitude of crankshaft locioperating on the lower rotating speeds is more larger than the higher ones due to reduction of inertia force of the reciprocating piston.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to compare tillage and loads characteristics of three types of rotavators in farmland working condition of Korea. Methods: Tillage operations using three types of rotavators, i.e. rotary-type, crank-type and plow-type, were carried out in a dry field of Korea. The same prime mover tractor was used for driving three types of rotavators, and under several operational conditions, tillage characteristics such as actual working speed, rotavating depth, rotavating width, actual field capacity, flow of tilled soil, soil inversion ratio, and pulverizing ratio were measured. In addition, loads characteristics like torque and required power of Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft were calculated. Results: The average rotavating depth was smaller than the nominal value for all rotavators, and the difference was the greatest in the plow-type rotavator. Nevertheless, the plow-type rotavator showed the largest rotavating depth. The rotavating width was the same as the nominal value of all rotavators. The flow of tilled soil at the same operational conditions was the greatest in the plow-type rotavator and was the smallest in the rotary-type rotavator. In the most commonly used gear conditions of L2 and L3, the average soil pulverizing ratio was the greatest in the rotary-type rotavator, and followed by crank-type and plow-type rotavators in order. In the gear L2 and L3, the plow-type rotavator also had the lowest average soil inversion ratio while the rotary-type and crank-type rotavators had the same soil inversion ratio each other. The average torque and power of PTO shaft in the gear L2 and L3 were the highest in the plow-type rotavator. The load spectra of PTO shaft applying rain flow counting method and Smith-Waston-Topper equation to the measured torque showed that the modified torque amplitude was the greatest in the crank-type rotavator. This may come from the large torque fluctuation of crank-type rotavator during tillage operations. Conclusions: The three types of rotavators had different tillage and loads characteristics. The plow-type rotavator had the deepest rotavating depth, the smallest soil inversion ratio, the largest soil pulverizing ratio and required PTO power. Also, the crank-type rotavator showed a large torque fluctuation because of their unique operational mechanism. This study will help the farmers choose a suitable type of rotavator for effective tillage operations.

  • This paper presents a wear analysis procedure for calculating the wear of journal bearings of a four-strokes and four-cylinder engine operating at a constant angular crank shaft speed during firing conditions. To decide whether the lubrication state of a journal bearing is in the possible region of wear scar, we utilize the concept of the centerline average surface roughness to define the most oil film thickness scarring wear (MOFTSW) on two rough surfaces. The wear volume is calculated from the wear depth and wear angle, determined by the magnitude of each film thickness on a set of oil films with thicknesses lower than the MOFTSW at every crank angle. To calculate the wear volume at one contact, the wear range ratio during one cycle is used. The total wear volume is then determined by accumulating the wear volume at every contact. The fractional film defect coefficient, asperity load sharing factor, and modified specific wear rate for the application of the mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime are used. The results of this study show that wear occurs only at the connecting-rod big-end bearing. Thus, simulation results of only the big-end bearing are illustrated and analyzed. It is shown that the wear volume of each wear scar group occurs consecutively as the crank angle changes, resulting in the total accumulated wear volume.

  • With the results of calculation for natural frequencies the reponses of forced coupled vibration of propulsion shafting system were investigated by the modal analysis method. For the forced vibration response analysis, the axial exciting forces, the axial damper/detuner, propeller exciting forces and damping coefficients were extensively considered. As the conclusion of this study, some items are cleared as follows.-The torsional vibration amplitudes are not influenced by the radial excitation forces of the crank shaft. -The axial vibration amplitudes are influenced by the tangential exciting forces as well as the radial exciting forces of the crank shaft. The increase of the amplitudes is observed in the speed range at the neighbourhood of any torsional critical speed. 1The closer the torsional and axial critical speed. the larger coupling effect becomes. -The axial exciting force of propeller is relatively strong comparing with axial exciting forces of cylinder gas pressure and oscillating inertia of reciprocating mechanism. Therefore, the following conclusions are obtained. -Torsional vibration calculation with the classical one dimensional model is still valid. -The influence of torsional excitation at each crank upon the axial vibration is improtant. especially in the neighbourhood of a torsional critical speed. That means that the calculation of axial vibration with the classical one dimensional model is inaccurate in most of cases.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the wear volumes of engine journal bearings operating at variable angular velocity of a shaft in the beginning of firing start-up cycle. To do this, first we find the potential region of wear scar on engine journal bearings where the applied bearing load and crank shaft velocity are variable. The potential wear regions are discovered by finding minimum oil film thickness at every crank angle existing below most oil film thickness scaring wear (MOFTSW) obtained based on the concept of the centerline average surface roughness. Then we calculate the wear volume from the wear depth and two wear angles decided by the magnitude of each film thickness lower than MOFTSW at every crank angle. The results show that the expected wear region is located at a few bearing angles after and/or behind the upper center of a big-end bearing and the lower center of a main bearing. And the real wear region is similar to the estimated wear region. Further we find that the wear scar on an engine journal bearing may occur at re-starting time after switch-off of a start motor especially under the condition of high oil temperature.

  • The TR forging is a kind of continuous grain flow forging. The preform of crank shaft for TR forging process was a round bar with a ring groove. In the first stage, the preform was partly heated by induction heating and then forged by vertical and horizontal force in sequence. In this study, the simulation process of induction heating was proposed to evaluate the temperature distribution of preform for TR forging. The equivalent circuit method was adopted to find coil current of the preform with a various dimensions and power levels. With these results, the coupled electromagnetic and transient thermal analysis for induction heating was performed to evaluate the temperature distribution at the preform of crank shaft during induction heating process. This FE analysis technique with equivalent circuit method was verified by comparing the analysis results with the experimental results.

  • There have been many studies to visualize the vibration and noise of rotary compressor. Most of these studies assumed that the signal is stationary and the time-averaged signal is used for visualization. However, the noise and vibration signals generated during one cycle of crank shaft vary continuously. In this paper, the noise and vibration of rotary compressor which vary continuously are visualized by short time fourier transform method. The location of source and the transfer path of vibration and noise at arbitrary frequencies, which can not be visualized by averaged signal, can be visualized clearly.
