  • FRMLs consist of thin sheets of high strength metal, which are laminated using a structural adhesive and high strength fibers. ARALL(Aramid-fiber Reinforced Aluminum alloy Laminates) of FRMLs is a new class of hybrid material. HERALL(Heracron Reinforced Aluminum Laminate) i.e. domestic ARALL is made of homemade aramid fibers, adhesives and adhesive technique. Domestic aramid fiber is Heracron manufactured by KOLON and domestic adhesive is epoxy resin manufactured by Han Kuk Fiber. In this study, Fatigue crack propagation behavior was examined in a 2024-T3 aluminum alloy/aramid-fiber epoxy 3/2 laminated composites, HERALL and ARAL $L^{ⓡ}$-2 LAMINATE comparing with 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. The extrinsic toughening mechanisms in HERALL and ARALL were examined, the crack bridging behavior of fibers was analyzed by new algorithm, which measures crack bridging stress, and the crack bridging zone length was measured.

  • The fracture process zone in concrete is a region ahead of a traction-free crack, in which two major mechanisms, microcracking and bridging, play important roles. The toughness due to bridging is dominant compared to toughness induced by microcracking, so that the bridging is dominani: mechanism governing the fracture process of concrete. Fracture mechanics does work for concrete provided that the fracture process zone is being considered, so that the development of model for the fracture process zone is most important to describe fracture phenomena in concrete. In this paper the bridging zone, which is a part of extended rnacrocrack with stresses transmitted by aggregates in concrete, is modelled by a Dugdale-Barenblatt type model with linear tension-softening curve. Two finite element techniques are shown for the analysis of progressive cracking in concrete based on the discrete crack approach: one with crack element, the other without crack element. The advantage of the technique with crack element is that it dees not need to update the mesh topology to follow the progressive cracking. Numerical results by the techniques are demonstrated.

  • Fracture toughness of particulate composites of Al2O3/SiC, Al2O3/ZrO2 and Al2O3/ZrO2/SiC was analysed theoretically. According to the suggested particle bridging model for obtaining the R-curve height, the crack extension resistance for the long crack was linearly proportional to the residual calmping stress at the interface between the second phase and the matrix. It was also a function of the particle size and the content. It was confirmed that the rising R-curve behavior of Al2O3 containing 30 vol% SiC particles of 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was owing to the strong crack bridging by SiC particles. For Al2O3/ZrO2/SiC composites, the tensional stress from the 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles was large enough to activate the spontaneous transformation of the ZrO2. The crack extension resistance due to the particle bridging mechanism did not seem to be affected much by the coupled toughening, but its resultant toughness increase could be significantly smaller due to the dependency on the matrix toughness.

  • A cracked plate with a patch bonded on one side was treated with a crack-bridging model using weight function: assuming continuous distribution of springs acting between th crack surfaces, the stress intensity factor of the patched crack was numerically obtained. Especially in the case of a patched crack subjected to residual non-uniform stress, the stress intensity factor was easily with the corresponding approximate weight function. This paper presented the stress intensity factors for a crack partially patched within a finite plate or a patched crack initiated from a notch.

  • Aluminum 5052/Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic(Al5052/AFRP) laminates are applied to the fuselage-wing intersection. The Al5052/AFRP laminates suffer from the cyclic bending moment of variable amplitude during the service. Therefore, the influence of cyclic bending moment on the delamination and the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Al5052/AFRP laminate was investigated in this study. Al5052/AFRP laminate composite consists of three thin sheets of Al5052 and two layers of unidirectional aramid fibers. The cyclic bending moment fatigue tests were performed with five different levels of bending moment. The shape and size of the delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack between Al5052 sheet and aramid fiber-adhesive layer were measured by an ultrasonic C-scan. The relationships between da/dN and ΔK, between the cyclic bending moment and the delamination zone size, and between the fiber bridging mechanism and the delamination zone were studied. Fiber failures were not observed in the delamination zone in this study. It represents that the fiber bridging modification factor should turn out to increase and that the fatigue crack growth rate should decrease. The shape of delamination zone turns out to be semi-elliptic with the contour decreased non-linearly toward the crack tip.

  • Crack growth tests on silicon nitride have been made to clarify the crack growth characteristics under static and cyclic loading. Under constant K(K: stress intensity factor) static loading the crack growth rate in silicon nitride decreases with increasing crack extension and is finally arrested. The cack growth resistiance is largely reduced by the application of stress cycling and though the crack growth resistiacne increases with increasing of crack extension the increasing rate is much smaller under cyclic loading than under static loading.

  • A hybrid composite (APAL;Aramid Patched ALuminum alloy, CPAL;Carbon Patched ALluminum alloy), consisting of a Al 2024-T3 aluminum alloy plate sandwiched between two aramid/epoxy and carbon/epoxy laminate, was developed. Fatigue crack growth behavior was examined at stress ratios of R=0.2, 0.5. The APAL and CPAL showed superior fatigue crack growth resistance, which may be attributed to the crack bridging effect imposed by the intact fibers in the crack wake.

  • The influence of cyclic bending moment on the delamination and the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Al/GFRP laminate such as the wing section was investigated. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between crack profile and delamination behavior. And a propose parameter on the delamination growth rate(d $A_{D}$/da) of Al/GFRP laminates with a saw-cut using relationship between delamination area( $A_{D}$) and cycles(N), crack length(a), stress intensity factor range($\Delta$K). Also, the fiber bridging effect factor( $F_{BE}$ ) was propose that the fiber bridging modification factor($\beta$$_{fb}$ ) to evaluate using the delamination growth rate(d $A_{D}$/da). The shape and size of the delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack between aluminum alloy sheet. Class fiber-adhesive layer were measured by an ultrasonic C-scan image. The shape of delamination zone turns out to be semi-elliptic with the contour decreased non-linearly toward the crack tip. It represents that relationship between crack length and delamination growth rate(d $A_{D}$/da) were interdependent by reciprocal action, therefore it's applicable present a model for the delamination growth rate(dA/sib D//da) in Al/GFRP laminates.minates.s.
