  • This study is to examine the engineering characteristics of colunmar joints in Mudeugsan National Park, a global geopark. For these purposes, physical and mechanical properties of Mudeungsan Tuff, evaluation for the weathering degree of columnar joints, and crack behavior monitoring in columnar joints were conducted. The physical properties of Mudeungsan tuff were 1.02% for the average porosity, 0.38% for the average absorption, 2.69 g/㎤ for the average specific gravity, and 4,948 m/s for the average elastic wave velocity. Its mechanical properties were 337 MPa for the average uniaxial compressive strength, 68 GPa for the average elastic modulus, 0.29 for the average Poisson's ratio, 41.3 MPa for the average cohesion strength, and 62.8° for the average friction angle. the average rebound Q-value of the silver Schmidt hammer for the three columnar joint blocks at the Ipseok-dae was shown as 49.3. when this value is converted into uniaxial compressive strength, it becomes 70.5 MPa, which is about 21% of the uniaxial compression strength of Mudeungsan tuff. In addition, according to the results of crack monitoring measurements for the three columnar joint blocks at the Ipseok-dae, the crack behavior is less than 1 mm, so it is believed that its behavior in Ipseak-dae columnar joints has hardly occured to date.

  • In this research, we tried to investigate the influence of concrete on cracks after applying to the actual construction site using the TPS construction method which can be easily charged by the mechanical injection method. To summarize the results, the following It is as follows. First, in the case of ultrasonic velocity, it can be seen that the ultrasonic wave passes rapidly at an average of about 36 mm / sec as compared with the syringe method when using the TPS method, and in the case of the injection depth, the syringe method In the case of TPS construction method, it showed an excellent tendency that 100% of the water retentive material was charged with all the formulations under a strong injection pressure. In the case of compressive strength, it was shown that the average was increased by 16.8% at the time of using the TPS construction method, and it was found to be structurally superior. Taken together, it is possible to confirm the behavior of the crack repairing agent by improving the quality by improving the strength and confirming the window installation by filling the injection material into the closed space at the crack site when using the TPS method compared with the syringe method. In addition, it is expected that construction time will be improved by shortening the construction period of about 5 days for the TPS construction method construction section 532 m, and usability will be expanded by the crack repair method of concrete structure.

  • This paper reports the influence of number of layers and length of GFRP sheets wrapped onto RCC beams for strengthening. Twelve beams of size $700mm{\times}150mm{\times}150mm$ were cast and tested. Two beams without GFRP and ten beams wrapped in different lay-up patterns with one and two layers of GFRP sheets was subjected to three point loading test and ultrasonic pulse velocity test. Initial crack load, ultimate failure load and types of failure have been observed and noted. Experimental results indicate a significant increase in initial and ultimate load carrying capacity of GFRP wrapped beams compared to unwrapped beams. The failed control specimen was retrofitted using U wrap scheme and tested under three point loading.

  • A fabrication process using Semi-Solid Material(SSM) for casting alloy has been studied to demonstrate the possibility for mass production with controlled solid fraction. The SSM was fabricated under the various solid fractions and preheating temperatures of mold. The behaviour of a semi-solid global microstructure has been investigated under the various heating and die temperatures for solid fraction. The effect of reheating time on the globularization of SSM microstructure has been investigated in detail. And the behavior of SSM which has the solid fraction 0.5 was observed under compression. The stress strain relationship was also obtained for the compression test of semi-solid materials. The rheological behaviour of semi-solid with globule microstructure was investigated as a function of the compression velocity under isothermal holing conditions.

  • In this study, we investigated the petrographic characteristics and physical property of the Rock-carved Seated Buddha at Bugmireugam hermitage of Daeheungsa temple in Haenam. The Buddha Statue was carved on micrographic granite, and the rock was composed of the fine quartz encircled by orthoclase. The results of diagnosis for deterioration evaluation have shown a highly damage rate of black contaminants (8.4%) and crack index (6.6). The ultrasonic velocity have detected SW (slightly weathered) grade of weathering coefficient (mean 0.18). Various weathering factor on the surface of the Buddha Statue was affected by precious shelter, and physical property with ultrasonic was directly influenced by the structural characteristics and fissure of host rock.

  • Ultrasonic inspection of heavy walled cast austenitic stainless steel(CASS)welds is very difficult due to complex and coarse grained structure of CASS material. The large size of anisotropic grain strongly affects the propagation of ultrasound by severe attenuation, change in velocity, and scattering of ultrasonic energy. therefore, the signal patterns originated from flaws can be difficult to distinguish from scattered signals. To improve detection and sizing capability of ID connected defect for heavy walled CASS piping welds, the low frequency segmented TRL Pulse Echo and Phased Array probe has been developed. The experimental studies have been performed using CASS pipe mock-up block containing artificial reflectors(ID connected EDM notch). The automatic pulse echo and phase array technique is applied the detection and the length sizing of the ID connected artificial reflectors and the results for detection and sizing has been compared respectively. The goal of this study is to assess a newly developed ultrasonic probe to improve the detection ability and the sizing of the crack in coarse-grained CASS components.

  • This research paper presents the outcomes in terms of mechanical and microstructural characteristics of binary and ternary concrete when exposed to elevated temperature. Three parameter were taken into account, (a) elevated temperature (i.e., 200, 400, 600 and 800℃) (b) binary concrete with cementitious material sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) replacement percentage (i.e., 0, 15, 20, 25 and 30%) and (c) ternary concrete with cementitious material SCBA and GGBFS replacement percentage (i.e., 0, 15, 20, 25 and 30%). A total of 285 standard cube specimens (150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm) containing Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), SCBA, and GGBFS were made. These specimens then exposed to several elevated temperatures for 2 h, afterword is allowed to cool at room temperature. The following basic physical, mechanical, and microstructural characteristics were then determined and discussed. (a) mass loss ratio, (b) ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) (c) physical behavior, (d) compressive strength, and (e) field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). It was found that compressive strength increases up to 400℃; beyond this temperature, it decreases. UPV value and massloss decrease with increase in temperature as well as the change in color and crack were observed at a higher temperature.

  • The growth of GaN on the patterned substances has proven favorable to achieve thick, crack-free GaN layers. In this paper, numerical modeling of transport and reaction of species is performed to estimate the growth rate of GaN from tile reaction of TMG(trimethly-gallium) and ammonia. GaN growth rate was estimated through the model analysis including the effect of species velocity, thermal convection and chemical reaction, and thermal condition for the uniform deposition was to be presented. The effect of shape and construction of microscopic pattern was also investigated using a simulator to perform surface analysis, and a review was done on the quantitative thickness and shape in making GaN layer on the pattern. Quantitative analysis was especially performed about the shape of reactor geometry, periodicity of pattern and flow conditions which decisively affect the quality of crystal growth. It was found that the conformal deposition could be obtained with the inclination of trench ${\Theta}>125^{\circ}$. The aspect ratio was sensitive to the void formation inside trench and the void located deep in trench with increased aspect ratio.

  • High-quality ${\beta}$-silicon carbide (SiC) coatings are expected to prevent the oxidation degradation of carbon fibers in carbon fiber/silicon carbide (C/SiC) composites at high temperature. Uniform and dense ${\beta}$-SiC coatings were deposited on carbon fibers by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LP-CVD) using silane ($SiH_4$) and acetylene ($C_2H_2$) as source gases which were carried by hydrogen gas. SiC coating layers with nanometer scale microstructures were obtained by optimization of the processing parameters considering deposition mechanisms. The thickness and morphology of ${\beta}$-SiC coatings can be controlled by adjustment of the amount of source gas flow, the mean velocity of the gas flow, and deposition time. XRD and FE-SEM analyses showed that dense and crack-free ${\beta}$-SiC coating layers are crystallized in ${\beta}$-SiC structure with a thickness of around 2 micrometers depending on the processing parameters. The fine and dense microstructures with micrometer level thickness of the SiC coating layers are anticipated to effectively protect carbon fibers against the oxidation at high-temperatures.
