  • Fatigue crack propagation rates and characteristics of the SA516-60 steel which is used for the low temperature pressure vessels, were studied in the room temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and low temperature ranges of $10^{\circ}C,\; -10^{\circ}C,\; -30^{\circ}C,\; -50^{\circ}C, \;and\; -70^{\circ}C4 with stress ratio of R=0.05. The obtained experimental results are as follows; 1) In the logarithmic relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate(da/dN) and stress intensity factor K, the linear relationship was obtained up to da/dN 〉$8\times10^{-3}$/mm/cycle in the same of room temperature, but in low temperature case, the relationship was extended to the range of crack propagation rate. 2) The lower limit stress intensity factor of SA516-60 $\DeltaK_{th}$ was 15.8MPa and in the case of low temperature $-50^{\circ}C\; and\; -70^{\circ}C$, the crack propagation rate da/dN which showed a linear relation, reached rapidly to the $\DeltaK_{th}$/. As the results, the crack propagation rates of $-50^{\circ}C\; and\; -70^{\circ}C$ were lower than that of room temperature and according to the testing temperature the rates were decreased rapidly to the $\DeltaK_{th}$/. 3) On the relationship between the stress intensity factor $\DeltaK$ and the crack propagation cycle, the stress intensity factors of low cycle region was rapidly increased at low temperature, but $\DeltaK$ was increased rapidly at room temperature of high cycle. 4) On the relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate and cycle, the fatigue crack propagation rate showed higher gradient in the room temperature than the low temperature due to the increment in ductility at low temperature.

  • In order to consider the concept of the fitness for purpose'in fatigue design of offshore structure, fracture mechanics is applied to evaluate initial or weld defects. Generally, linear elastic fracture mechanics has been applied to tstimate initial fatigue crack propagation rate as well as long fatigue crack propagation rate. But, initial fatigue crack propagation rate in elasto-plastic notch field may not be characterized by application of stress intensity factor range .DELTA. K, because plastic effect due to stress concentration of notch may contribute to initial crack propagation. Therefore, to introduce the plastic effect into fatigue crack driving force, in this studty, the evaluating method of J-integral range .DELTA. J, was developed by willson was modified for application to notch field. In calculation of .DELTA. J obtained from the modified J-integral, stress gradient and crack closure behavior in the notch field were considered. The initial crack propagation rates in the notch fields of mild steels and high tensile strength steels were correlated to .DELTA. J. As the result, it was cleared that the present .DELTA. J is applicable to charachterize the fatigue crack propagation rates in both the elastic and elasto-plastic notch fields.

  • This study investigates crack propagation behavior of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder under pull-push loading conditions. Fatigue Crack Growth (FCG) tests were conducted on Center Cracked Plate (CCP) specimens in fast-fast (pp) strain waveform. The fast-slow (pc), slow-fast (cp) and slow-slow (cc) strain waveforms were also used to study the effect of strain rates. The crack propagation rates for the four strain waveforms were correlated with J-integral range and a scatter band of factor 4 was found. The crack growth rates for the pc waveform was highest, followed by cp, cc and then pp waveforms.

  • In this study effect of residual stress and its redistribution in weldment on the fatigue crack propagation was investigated. Fatigue tests were conducted by the center notched specimens machined with welded plate. The residual stress and its redistribution after the crack growth were measured by the magnetizing stress indicator and hole-drilling method. Fatigue crack propagation was estimated by the specimens having residual stress redistributed after the cracks growth and having the effects of crack closure. Crack growth rates were predicted and compared with experimental results. It had been found that the predicted crack propagation rates have a good agreement with experimental results when the redistribution of residual stress was considered.

  • The fatigue crack propagation behavior in SA106 Gr.C main steam pipe weld joint was investigated in air environment. Crack growth rate tests were conducted on base metal and weld metal at load ratio of 0.1 and 0.3 and at frequency of 10Hz. The fatigue crack growth rates of the base metal and the weld metal were above the ASME reference line and the fatigue crack propagation rate of the weld metal was higher than those of the base metal. Fatigue crack growth rate increased with increasing the load ratio and the effect of the load ratio was more significant in the weld metal. The post weld heat treatment increased the fatigue crack growth rates of the base metal by reducing compressive residual stress and decreased those of the weld metal by reducing weld defects.

  • A typical wear pattern was reported to resemble the fatigue crack growth behavior considering its mechanism, especially for amorphous rubbers such as styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). In this study, the wear and crack growth rates were correlated using two separate experiments for carbon black and silica-reinforced selected rubber compounds. The wear rate was determined using a blade-type abrasion tester, where the frictional energy input during wearing was measured. The crack propagation rate was determined under different tearing energy inputs using a home-made fatigue tester, with a pure-shear test specimen containing pre-cracks. The rates of abrasion and crack propagation were plotted on a log-log scale as a function of frictional and tearing energies, respectively. Reasonable agreement was observed, indicating that the major mechanism of the abrasion pattern involved repeated crack propagation.

  • For the steel structures those are used in harsh sea environments, corrosion fatigue is a challenging issue in connection with design life. In this research, in order to investigate the influence of cathodic overprotection on the corrosion fatigue crack propagation behavior, corrosion fatigue crack propagation test under the condition of -950mV vs SCE was conducted by using of high tensile TMCP steel plate and the relationships between da/dN-${\Delta}K$ were obtained. At this test, when ${\Delta}K$ is low, the crack propagation rates were accelerated compared to those of seawater condition, however, when ${\Delta}K$ is high, the crack propagation rates were lower than those of seawater condition. As the cause for the acceleration and deceleration of corrosion fatigue crack propagation rates under the condition of cathodic overprotection, the role of hydrogen and calcareous deposits are discussed.

  • Fatigue crack growth rates(i.e. crack initiation and crack growth of short and long crack) are investigated using commercial plates of high strength Al alloy 7075-T651 for the transverse-longitudinal(T-L) direction in air, water and sea water. Also, the evaluation direct current potential drop(D.C.P.D) method and the fractographical analysis by SEM are carried out. Near threshold region, short crack growth rates were much faster than those of comparable long cracks, and these short crack growth rates actually decrease with increasing crack growth and eventually merge with long crack data. Fatigue crack propagation rates in aggressive media(i.e. sea water) increase noticeably over three times those in air. One of the most significant characters in this phenomenon as a corrosion-fatigue causes an acceleration in crack growth rates. Sea water environment, particularly Cl$^{[-10]}$ solution brings the most detrimental effects to aluminum alloy. The result of fractographical morphology in air, water and sea water by SEM shows obvious dimpled rupture and typical striation in air, but transgranular fracture surface in water and sea water.
