  • The effect of specimen thickness on fatigue crack growth behavior has been carried out by compact tension specimens of thickness of 3mm, 10mm and 25mm for maraging steel and Al 7075-T6. The closure points were determined during the test by means of a clip-gage situated at the notch mouth. Specimen thickness have no apparent influence on the fatigue crack growth rate of maraging steel, but the crack growth rate of 25mm thickness specimen for Al 7075-T6 is faster than that of 3 and 10mm specimens. The difference of crack growth rates can be successfully explained by considering the different stress state of plane strain and plain stress due to the variation of specimen thickness. Also the crack opening ratio of 25mm specimen is greater than those of 3 and 10mm specimens. When a side groove is introduced in a 10mm specimen, the crack growth rate is approximately similar to that of 25mm specimen. The effective thickness expression of $B_e=B_o-(B_o-B_N)^2B_o$ is the most appropriate to evaluate the crack growth rate of side-grooved specimen. Fatigue crack growth rates can be well described by $\Delta K_{eff}$ of the crack closure points in regardless of all thickness and side-grooved specimens.

  • A way to measure the second parameter $A_2$of CT specimens is described. The displacement $\delta$$_{5}$ which is measured continuously from visual images of the lateral surface during crack growth is used to calculate the A, as a function of crack growth. The crack length is measured by DCPD(Direct Current Potential Drop) method and the J-resistance curve is determined according to ASTM standard E1737-96. To prove the validity of this method, three dimensional finite element analyses were performed, and variations of the displacements $\delta$$_{5}$ and $A_2$along the thickness were explored. As the result, it has been shown that the $\delta$$_{5}$ measured from the visual images of the lateral surface and the corresponding $A_2$can be regarded as the average through the thickness for 1T and 1/2T specimens of SA106Gr.C steel.steel.

  • Metal matrix composites had generated a lot of interest in recent times because of significant in specific properties. It was also highlighted as the materials of frontier industry because strength, heat-resistant, corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant were superiored. In this study the strength properties of $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}/AC4CH$ were represented mixing the binder of $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$. It was also fabricated by squeeze casting. $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}/AC4CH$ was fabricated at the melt temperature of $760^{\circ}C$ the perform temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ and mold temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 83.4MPa and observed SEM. Fatigue crack growth rate tests on compact tension specimen(half-size) of thickness 12.5mm were conducted by using sinusoidal waveform. Compact tension specimens(half-size) were used and fatigue crack growth rate da/dN and stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$ were analyzed concerning to the R value of 0.1 and 0.05. In order to find out the value of ${\Delta}K$, load amplitude constant method was applied by the standard fatigue testing method describes in ASTM E647-95a. As the results of this study, Fatigue crack growth rate increased with in creasing the load ratio, Consequently, At equivalent stress intensity factors, the fatigue crack growth rates in MMC were faster than those of AC4CH alloy. then the fatigue life and the fatigue crack growth rate was investigated using scanning election microscopy(SEM)

  • This study verified the relationship between fracture mechanics parameters$({\Delta}K,\;{\Delta}K_{eff},\;K_{max})$ and X-ray parameters $(\sigma_r,\;B)$ for SG365 steel at elevated temperature up to $300^{\circ}C$. The fatigue crack propagation test were carried out and X-ray diffraction technique according to crack length direction was applied to fatigue fractured surface. The residual stress on the fracture surface was found to increase low ${\Delta}K$ region, reach to a maximum value at a certain value of $K_{max}\;or\;{\Delta}K$ and then decrease. Residual stress were independent on stress ratio by arrangement of ${\Delta}K$ and half value breadth were independent by the arrangement of $K_{max}$. The equation of $\sigma_r-{\Delta}K$ was established by the experimental data. Therefore, fracture mechanics parameters could be estimated by the measurement of X-ray parameters.

  • The effect of mechanical, properties in the plastic zone near the crack-tip was investigated, under various controlled loading conditions, i.e., ${\Delta}K$ increasing, ${\Delta}K$ decreasing, and single overload test. For both ${\Delta}K$ decreasing test and ${\Delta}K$ increasing test with constant stress ratio, it is found that the ratio of material constant m'( ${\Delta}K$ decreasing test) to material constant m( ${\Delta}K$ increasing test) is larger than 1 for n<0.1, and it is equal to 1 for 0.10.2. A modified crack growth rate equation based on Forman's equation which applied stable region of fatigue crack propagation in ${\Delta}K$ decreasing test is proposed. Within the limit of this single overload test, an empirical relation between among the retardation ratio (Nd/ $N^{*}$), the strain hardening exponent (n) and the percent peak load (%PL) has been established.established.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature, high temperature experiment. And ire got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room, and high temperature at $25^{\circ}C,\;100^{\circ}C,\;150^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}Kth$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and stress intensity (actor range ${\Delta}K$ in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at high temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • The effect of loading waveform on elevated temperature low-cycle fatigue crack growth behavior in a SUS 304 stainless steel have been investigated under symmetrical trangular (fast-fast), trapezoidal and asymmetrical(fast-slow, slow-fast) waveforms at 650.deg. C. It was found that the crack growth rate in fast-slow loading waveform appeared to be higher a little and the crack growth rate in slow-fast loading waveform much higer than that in fast-fast loading waveform, and difference in crack growth rate between fast-show and slow-fast waveforms nearly didn't appear in the region of da/dN>10/sup -2/ The crack growth rate in the trapezoidal loading waveform with t/sub h/=500sec appeared to be faster than that in slow(500sec)-fast(1sec). In addition, parameter modified J-integral could be considered as useful parameter for fatigue crack growth rate in all waveforms. The result obtained are as follow. da/dN=4.91*10/sup -3/ (.DELTA. • To examine the effect of acid fog on the corrosion fatigue behavior in structural steel, fatigue tests under acid fog atmosphere were carried out in comparison with distilled water. The corrosive c omponents contained in acid fog pile up the corrosion products on crack face and show a crack branching and crack tip blunting. Therefore, due to these workings crack growth rate was reduced by decreasing the effective stress range in crack tip rather than under distilled water. Also the effect of sulfuric acid, which is the main component of acid fog, and testing speed on fatigue crack growth were examined. It was found that corrosion behavior was remarkably dependent upon pH and Hz rather than components of acid fog. According as pH and testing speed decrease below a specific value, crack growth was accelerated in comparison with distilled water. This reveals that due to liquid having strong acidity and slow speed of test the crack face dissolution was promoted, so crack closure was disturbed in the process of stress descent.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior. For this purpose, submerged arc welding was performed on SM50A steel plate and post weld heta treatment (PWHT) was followed. Residual stress distribution on the weld plate was determined by a hole drilling method and a series of .DELTA.P-const. and .DELTA.K-decreasing fatigue test were performed on the three different regions, i.e. weld metal, HAZ and base metla. Following conclusins were achieved. 1. In "as welded" specimens, tensile residual stresses were produced in the center portion of the specimen while compressive residual stresses were produced near the edges. In PWHT specimens, however, most of the residual stresses were disappeared. 2. The fatigue crack growth behavior in low .DELTA.K region was considerably affected by the presence of residual stress in both "as welded" and PWHT specimens. 3. Because of the relaxation of residual stresses in PWHT condition, the values of m increased from 2.62-2.78 (in the "as welded" condition) to 3.57-3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)condition)
