Statistical Distribution of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate for Friction Stir Welded Joints of Al7075-T651 (Al7075-T651의 마찰교반용접된 접합부의 피로균열전파율의 통계적 분포)

  • This paper deals with the effects of driving force and material properties on statistical distribution of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) for the friction stir welded joints of Al 7075-T651 aluminum plate. In this work, the statistical probability distribution of fatigue crack growth rate was analyzed by using our previous constant stress intensity factor range controlled fatigue crack growth test data. As far as this study are concerned, the statistical probability distribution of fatigue crack growth rate for the friction stir welded (FSWed) joints was found to evaluate the variability of fatigue crack growth rate for base metal (BM), heat affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal (WM) specimens. The probability distribution of fatigue crack growth rate for FSWed joints was found to follow well log-normal distribution. The shape parameter of BM and HAZ was decreased with increasing the driving force, however, the shape parameter of WM was decreased and increased with increasing the driving force. The scale parameter of BM, HAZ and WM was increased with the driving force.

Overload Analysis and $J_e$ Based Fatigue Life Prediction of Spot-Welded Auto Seat Belt Anchors (점용접된 차량 안전벨트 앵커의 과부하해석 및 $J_e$에 의한 피로수명예측)

  • We evaluate the effectiveness and validity of J(sub)e, which comprehensively describes the effects of specimen geometry and loading type, in predicting the fatigue life of auto seat belt anchor panel. We first simplify the heat affected zone model to reduce the number of finite elements. We then establish finite element models reflecting the actual overload behavior of 3 types of seat belt anchor specimens. Using finite element models elaborately established, we obtain the effective crack driving parameter J(sub)e composed of its ductility-dependent modal components. It is confirmed that the J(sub)e concept successfully predicts the fatigue life of multi-spot welded panel structures represented by auto seat belt anchors here.

  • As the welding spot forms a singular geometry of an external crack type, fatigue failure of spot-welded specimens can be evaluated by means of a fracture parameter. Recasting the load vs. fatigue life relationships experimentally obtained, we predicted the fatigue life of spot-weld specimens with a single parameter denoted the equivalent stress intensity factor. This crack driving parameter is demonstrated to successfully describe the effects of specimen geometry and loading type in a comprehensive manner. The suggested fatigue life formula for a single spot weld can play a key role in the design and assessment of spot-welded panel structures, in that the fatigue strength of multi-spots is eventually determined by the fatigue strength of each single spot. We therefore attempt to evaluate the effectiveness and validity of $K_e$ in predicting the fatigue life of auto seat belt anchor panel.   • The study on the mechanical behavior of a spot-welded specimen is largely divided into the quasi-static overload failure analysis and the fatigue failure prediction. The main issue in an overload analysis is to examine the critical loads, thereby providing a generalized overload failure criterion. As the welding spot forms a singular geometry of an external crack type, fatigue failure of spot-welded specimens can be evaluated by means of a fracture parameter. In this study, we first present the limit loads of 4 representative types of single spot-welded specimens in terms of the base metal yield strength and specimen geometries. Recasting the load vs. fatigue life relationships experimentally, obtained here, we then predict the fatigue life of spot-weld specimens with a single parameter denoted the equivalent stress intensity factor. This crack driving parameter is demonstrated to successfully describe the effects of specimen geometry and loading type in a comprehensive manner.   • This paper proposes an integrated approach, which is independent of specimen geometry and loading type, for predicting the fatigue life of spot welded specimens. We first establish finite element models reflecting the actual specimen behaviors observed on the experimental load-deflection curves of 4 types of single spot welded specimens. Using finite element models elaborately established, we then evaluate fracture parameter J-integral to describe the effects of specimen geometry and loading type on the fatigue life in a comprehensive manner. It is confirmed, however, that J-integral concept alone is insufficient to clearly explain the generalized relationship between load and fatigue life of spot welded specimens. On this ground, we introduce another effective parameter $J_e$ composed of $J_I$, $J_{II}$, $J_{III}$, which has been demonstrated here to more sharply define the relationship between load and fatigue life of 4 types of spot welded specimens. The crack surface displacement method is adopted for decomposition of J, and the mechanism of the mixed mode fracture is also discussed in detail as a motivation of using $J_e$.

A Study on the Behavior of the Plane Stress Fracture Toughness - About the Compact Tension Specimen- (平面應力 破壞靭性値 擧動에 관한 硏究)

  • In this paper, the plane stress fracture toughness of low carbon steel with 3mm thickness is investigated for various specimen widths and crack ratios using the J integral. The experiments is carried out for the compact tension(CT) specimen on an Instron machine. For materials that may be approximated by the Ramberg and Osgood stress strain law, the relevant crack parameter like the J integral and load line displacement are approximately normalized. Crack driving forces in terms of J integral is computed using the above estimation scheme. Abtained results are summarized as follows. (1) The plane stress fracture toughness, J$_{c}$, is almost constant in the range 50-70mm of width. Hence J$_{c}$ can be obtained by using smaller specimen than ASTM standard. (2) Yoon's and Simpson's formular which considers crack growth in obtaining J integral show more consevative J than Rice's and Merkle's (3) J$_{c}$ is almost constant in the range 0.499-0.701 crack ratios tested. J$_{c}$ obtained by using Kumar's formular is 28.14kgf/mm for base metal specimen and 32.51kgf/mm for annealed. (4) Comparison of the prediction with actual experimental measurements by Yoon's formular show good agreement for several different-size specimens.

Analyses of Stress Intensity Factors and Evaluation of Fracture Toughness in Adhesively Bonded DCB Joints (DCB 접착이음에 대한 응력세기계수의 해석 및 파괴인성의 평가)

  • In this paper, an evaluation method of fracture toughness to apply interfacial fracture mechanics was investigated in adhesively bonded double-cantilever beam (DCB) joints. Four types of adhesively bonded DCB joints with an interface crack were prepared for analyses of the stress intensity factors using boundary element method(BEM) and the fracture toughness test. From the results of BEM analysis and fracture toughness experiments, it is found that the stress intensity factor, K1 is a parameter driving the fracture of adhesively bonded joints. Also, the evaluation method of fracture toughness by separated stress intensity factors of mixed mode cracks was proposed and the influences of mode components for its fracture toughness are investigated in adhesively bonded DCB joints.
