In this study, the relationship between metals (Cu, Cr, Cd, Zn. Pb, and Fe) 5 fractions and toxicity of soil samples from various contaminated sites in Korea were investigated. Metal toxicity of soils was tested using MetPLATE$^{TM}$ test kit, which is known as metal sensitive and organic insensitive. Significant amount of Fe was found in soils, and metal contents were in the order of Fe>Zn>Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd. Metal levels in organic fraction were rather high for all metals except Fe, and quite high percentages (35~79%) for residual fraction were observed for all metals. There were no significant relationships between the content of each metal fraction and toxicity which showed regression $R^2$in the range of 0.0003~0.414. However, correlation between toxicity and total metal contents showed regression coefficient $R^2$= 0.72. These results showed that the risk evaluation of metals in contaminated sites should be difficult to assess only by the contents of metal distribution because of the complexity of mixture of various metals.s.

Daily average concentrations of fine particulates have been measured simultaneously in Seoul and Asan area by using PM minivolTM portable air sampler(Air Metrics, U.S.A) from September 2001 to August 2002. The sampler were analyzed by ICP-OES(inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, optima 3000DV, Perkin Elmor) to determine the fine particulate concentrations of metallic elements(As, Mn. Ni, Fe, Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Si). The concentration of PM$\sub$2.5/ showed a high trend in the Seoul area. Zn showed a similar distribution ratio for the fine particle in both Seoul and Asan. Mn and Fe, Cr, Cd are highly correlated in the Seoul and Asan area(P<0.05).
To find the optimum growth and metal removal condition of isolated strain LH2, effects of the environmental factors such as medium pH, growth temperature, and metal concentrations were investigated. Based on the 18S rDNA analysis, the isolated strain was identified to Exophiala sp. with 100% homology. Isolated strain Exophiala sp. LH2 showed maximum removal efficiency of metals at the shaking conditions of pH 7 and $25^{\circ}C$. When the concentration of metal was under 200ppm, the specific metal removal velocity at pH 7 increased from 0.01 to 4.43 mg-metal $L^{-1}{\cdot}d^{-1}{\cdot}mg{\cdot}DCW^{-1}$ as the concentration of metal increased from 10 ppm to 200 ppm. When 200 ppm of each metal was contained in the culture medium adjusted with pH 7, metal removal efficiencies Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were 99.28%, 97.67%, 91.94%, 99.77%, 99.61%, respectively.

The microstructure, V-I characteristics, and stability of ZnO-Pr$_{6}$O$_{11}$-CoO-Cr$_2$O$_3$-Y$_2$O$_3$based vairstors were investigated with cooling rate in the range of 2~8$^{\circ}C$/min. The cooling rate relatively weakly affected the microstructure, and the varistor voltage and the leakage current in the V-I chracteristics. But the nonlinear exponent relatively strongly affected by cooling rate. And the cooling rate also greatly affected the stability for DC stress. In gross, the varistors cooled with 4$^{\circ}C$/min exhibited the highest performance in the densification, nonlinearity, and stability. Especially, they exhibited a high stability, in which the variation rate of the varistor voltage and the nonlinear exponent is -1.44% and -4.85%, respectively, under more severe DC stress such as (0.80 V$_{1mA}$9$0^{\circ}C$/12 h)+(0.85 V$_{1mA}$115$^{\circ}C$/12 h)\`(0.90 V$_{1mA}$12$0^{\circ}C$/12 h)+(0.95 V$_{1mA}$1$25^{\circ}C$/12 h)+(0.95 V$_{1mA}$15$0^{\circ}C$/12 h). It should be emphasized that the stability of these varistors is much superior to that of others.s.of others.s.
BACKGROUND: Mine drainage from metal mining districts is a well-recognized source of environmental contamination. Oxidation of metal sulfides in mines, mine dumps and tailing impoundments produces acidic, metal-rich waters that can contaminate the local surface water and soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: This experiment was carried out to investigate the pollution assessment of heavy metal on the water quality of mine drainage, paddy soils and sediment in lower watershed affected by mine drainage of the Sambo mine. The average concentrations of dissolved Cd (0.018~0.035 mg/L) in mine drainage discharged from the main waste rock dumps(WRD) was higher than the water quality standards (0.01 mg/L) for agricultural water in Korea. Also, the average concentrations of dissolved Zn, Fe and Mn were higher than those of recommended maximum concentrations (Zn 2.0, Fe 5.0, Mn 0.2 mg/L) of trace metal in irrigation water proposed by FAO (1994). The average contents of Pb and Zn in paddy soils was higher than those of standard level for soil contamination(Pb 200, Zn 300 mg/kg) in agricultural soil by Soil Environmental Conservation Act in Korea. Also, the concentrations of Cd, Pb and Zn in sediment were higher than those of standard level for soil contamination (Cd 10, Pb 400, Zn 600 mg/L) in waterway soil by Soil Environmental Conservation Act in Korea. The enrichment factor (EFc) of heavy metals in stream sediments were in the order as Cd>Pb>Zn> As>Cu>Cr>Ni. Also, the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) of heavy metals in stream sediments were in the order as Zn>Cd>Pb>Cu>As>Cr>Ni, specially, the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) of Zn (Igeo 3.1~6.2) were relatively higher than that of other metals in sediment. CONCLUSION(s): The results indicate that stream water and sediment were affected by mine drainage discharged from the Sambo mine at least to a distance of 1 km downstream (SN-1, SN-2) of the mine water discharge point.
Considering risks and artificial enrichments of metals in the soils of the study area, the study aims to analyze geology, grain size and geochemistry. Geology is mainly composed of gneisses and phyllites of metamorphic rocks, sandstones, siltstones, shales, tuffs of sedimentary ones and granites and andesites of igneous ones in the area. In the area, mean contents of metals are not meaningful in accordance with petrogenesis. The soil textures of the area are of S, lS and sL of sandy soil, L, scL, cL of loam and C, zC and sC of clayey soil. Mean contents of Ni, Cr, Co and Cu are meaningfully high in loam and clayey soil relative to sandy soil, whereas Ni, Zn, Cd contents are higher in clayey soil than in loam. Those differences imply the metallic contents are dependent to grain size. Based on the metal contents in the soils of the study area, Cu and Zn in loams and Pb in sandy soils are corresponded to soil contamination warning standards, and As showing 75mg/kg of maximum content in loams is assigned to soil contamination countermeasure standards, respectively. Artificial enrichment factor minimized wall rock and grain size relations is over 1 in Cr, Ni and Cu, but the factor is below 1 in average of other metals.
BACKGROUND: This experiment was conducted to investigate the distribution and burden characteristics of heavy metal in the rainwater sampled at Taean area, in the middle part of Korea, from April 2002 to October 2003. METHODS AND RESULTS: The relationship between concentration of heavy metal and other chemical properties in the rainwaters was also evaluated. Chemical properties in the rainwater were various differences with raining periods and years. It appeared that a weighted average pH values of rainwater was ranged from 5.0 to 5.1. Heavy metal concentrations in the rainwater were ranked as Pb > Zn > Cu > Ni > As > Cr > Cd. As compared with heavy metal concentrations of rainwater in 2002, Cu, Pb, and Zn were higher than other elements in 2003. There were positive correlation between major ionic components, such as ${NH_4}^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$, $Na^+$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and ${NO_3}^-$, and As, Cd, Zn, Cr, and Ni concentrations in rainwater. For heavy metal distribution of rainwater, the order of average enrichment factor was Cd > Pb > As > Cu > Zn > Ni > Cr, and these were relatively higher than the natural components such as Fe, Mg and Ca. The monthly enrichment factor were relatively high, from August to October at Taean. The monthly amount of heavy metal precipitation was high in the rainy season from July to August because of great influence of rainfall. CONCLUSION(s): The results of this study suggest that the heavy metals(Cd, Pb, As, Cu, and Zn) of rainwater is strongly influenced by anthropogenic sources rather than natural sources.

This paper reports the variations of varistor voltage, nonlinear exponent, leakage current, and dissipation factor against surge stress of ZnO-P $r_{6}$$O_{11}$-CoO-C $r_2$$O_3$-E $r_2$$O_3$(ZPCCE)-based varistors manufactured with the variations of sintering temperature. It was found that the variations of electrical parameters against surge stressing current of 100 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$(8x20 ${\mu}\textrm{s}$) is not so large under the surge stress of 700 times. Among varistors, specially the varistor sintered at 134$0^{\circ}C$ exhibited the smallest variations, with %$\Delta$$V_{lmA}$=+0.23%, %$\Delta$$\alpha$=+0.23%, %$\Delta$$I_{L}$=0%, %$\Delta$tan$\delta$=-6.94%. The clamping voltage ratio( $V_{c}$/ $V_{lmA}$) of all varistors was less than 2.2.2.2.2.2.2.

The new passive sampler called "artificial mussel (AM)" offers a potential device to study the spatiotemporal changes of metal concentrations in different marine environment worldwide. The purpose of this study is to characterize metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb) accumulation on the AM and transplanted mussel (Mytilus edulis) at 5 sites of Lake Shihwa. Both the AMs and mussels showed increasing concentrations of all five metals during the 12 weeks exposure period. Higher concentrations of Zn were showed in both the AMs and Mytilus edulis relative to other metals. The AMs accumulated higher concentrations of Cd, Cr and Zn, but they presented lower levels of Cu and Pb than Mytilus edulis. The correlations for Cd, Cu and Pb were statistically significant between the AMs and Mytilus edulis, indicating that the accumulation patterns for those metals were similar. However, no similarities for Cr and Zn were observed between two monitoring devices across all of the sites in Shihwa Lake. According to relationship for metal concentrations between dissolve phase in seawater and both the AMs and Mytilus edulis, the AMs for Cd, Cu and Zn represent more metal contamination than Mytilus edulis. Our results indicated that the AMs give a better resolution to reveal the spatial differences in dissolved metal concentration. This study suggests that the AMs can provide a time-integrated estimate of metal pollution in marine environments as well as freshwater environments of Korea.

Heavy metal level and distribution in sediments and bivalves from the tidal flats along the mid-western coast, Korea, were investigated. The averages of heavy metal concentrations in sediments from 5 sampling sites ranged from 86.35-187.77mg/kg for Mn, 13.25-17.73mg/kg for Zn, 6.80-11.85mg/kg for Cr, 4.28-6.25mg/kg for Ni, 1.85-3.09mg/kg for Cu, 0.004-0.020mg/kg for Cd and 5.70-10.41mg/kg for Pb, respectively. Among the mussels of the limited body size(8.5-11cm), heavy metal concentration both in the flesh and in the whole soft parts were not strongly related to the body size. It was shown that, in S. strictus, Cu moves fast into the flesh after absorption, but Pb and Fe move very slowly. Overally, the heavy metal concentration in the flesh tends to increase with that in the whole soft parts. The concentration factors(heavy metal concentration in S. strictus/heavy metal concentration in sediment) showed that, of the examined metals, Cd is the most cumulative in the body of S. strictus, followed by Zn and Cu, while Mn, Cr, Ni and Pb are not cumulative.
