  • Fictitious notch radius approach is based on the Neuter's microstructural support hypothesis which assumes that fatigue crack is governed by highly stressed volume of the material right on the weld toe area rather than the surface stress at a pin point of weld toe area. Variety of successes have been achieved in applying this methodology to the fatigue of welded joint, hence, it became one of recommended design procedure in IIW's recommendation as well as many ship classification societies. 1mm fictitious notch radius approach was applied to the various fatigue problems of welded joints in this study covering the effect of weld size, notch stress calculation for 3D geometry and low cycle fatigue problem. It was found that fictitious notch radius approach fumed out to be very effective and accurate in dealing with fatigue strength of welded joint.

  • The set covering(SC) problem has many practical application of modeling not only real world problems in civilian but also in military. In this paper we study optimal allocation model for maximizing utility of consolidating old fashioned and new air defense weapon system like Patriot missile and develop the new computational algorithm for the SC problem by using simulated annealing(SA) algorithm. This study examines three different methods: 1) simulated annealing(SA); 2) accelerated simulated annealing(ASA); and 3) selection by effectiveness degree(SED) with SA. The SED is adopted as an enhanced SA algorithm that the neighboring solutions could be generated only in possible optimal feasible region at the PERTURB function. Furthermore, we perform various experiments for both a reduced and an extended scale sized situations depending on the number of customers(protective objective), service(air defense), facilities(air defense artillery), threat, candidate locations, and azimuth angles of Patriot missile. Our experiment shows that the SED obtains the best results than others.

  • Symbiotic evolutionary algorithms, also called cooperative coevolutionary algorithms, are stochastic search algorithms that imitate the biological coevolution process through symbiotic interactions. In the algorithms, the fitness evaluation of an individual required first selecting symbiotic partners of the individual. Several partner selection strategies are provided. The goal of this study is to analyze how much partnering strategies can influence the performance of the algorithms. With two types of test-bed problems: the NKC model and the binary string covering problem, extensive experiments are carried out to compare the performance of partnering strategies, using the analysis of variance. The experimental results indicate that there does not exist statistically significant difference in their performance.

  • This paper presents a linear programming based algorithm for pattern classification. Pattern classification is being considered to be critical in the area of artificial intelligence and business applications. Previous methods employing linear programming have been aimed at two-group discrimination with one or more linear discriminant functions. Therefore, there are some limitations in applying available linear programming formulations directly to general multi-class classification problems. The algorithm proposed in this manuscript is based on quadratic or polynomial discriminant functions, which allow more flexibility in covering the class regions in the N-dimensional space. The proposed algorithm is compared with other competitive methods of pattern classification in experimental results and is shown to be competitive enough for a general purpose classifier.

  • This paper presents a heuristic method for solving the discrete-time ordering problem with quantity discounts and deterministic, time-varying demand. This algorithm utilizes a variation of the incremental cost approach(ICA) to determine a near optimal solution. The ICA is the method which reduces the total cost with reduction of the number of orders by one. In order to reduce the number of orders, if the incremental cost for one of the periods is negative, the demand of the period should be purchased in its immediate preceding period. In order to test the performance of this algorithm, an experiment is conducted that involves a large number of test problems covering a wide variety of situations. The result of the experiment shows that the proposed algorithm has 80.5% better solutions than the adjusted part period algorithm(APPA), which is known to be the best heuristic method.

  • Symbiotic evolutionary algorithms are stochastic search algorithms that imitate the biological coevolution process through symbiotic interactions. In the algorithms, the fitness evaluation of an individual requires first selecting symbiotic partners of the individual. The symbiotic partner effects the change of individual's fitness and search direction. In this study we are to analyze how much partnering strategies can influence the performance of the algorithms. For this goal extensive experiments are carried out to compare the performance of partnering strategies. The NKC model and the binary string covering problem are used as the test-bed problems. • According to the fast-paced environment of information technology and improving customer services, the design activities of logistics systems improve customer centric services and delivery performance implementing e-logistics system. The fundamental design issues that arise in the delivery system planning are optimizing the system with minimum cost and maximum throughput and service level. This study is concerned with the integrated model development of delivery system with customer responsive service level for DCM, Demand Chain Management. We used a two-step approach for this study. First, we formulated the supply. center facility planning using stochastic set-covering problem and assigned the customers to the supply center using clustering algorithm. Second, we developed vehicle delivery planning for a supply center based on GIS, GIS-VRP. Also we developed a GUI-type computer program for proposed method for supply center problem using GIS and Geo-DataBase of Busan area. The computational results showed that the proposed method was very effective on a set of test problems.

  • This study suggests a procedure for designing cellular manufacturing systems (CMS) which are combined with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) using a tandem configuration. So far most of the previous studies have dealt with conventional design problems not considering the layout and the characteristics of transporters used in CMS. A mathematical model is developed using the service time to perform material transfers as a suitable meassure. The service capacity of AGVs and space limitations are also reflected in this model. As the model can be shown strongly NP-hard, a heuristic algorithm is presented, in which each cell is temporarily formed using both the set covering model and similarity coefficients, and then locations of the cells are determined by means of tabu search and finally machine perturbations are carried out. An example problem is solved to demonstrate the algorithm developed.

  • This study evaluates representability and comprehensivity of the Theasurus in theeconomics and industry fields of the "General Thesaurus of Newspaper Articles." The methodsused in the study were, first, indexing of the pages covering economics and industry articlesusing the Thesaurus and second, comparing the Thesaurus terms with the words collectedfrom the newspapers articles and glossaries. The study clarifies the following problems whichmight occur in the construction and use of newspaper thesaurus: specificity of the subjectconcepts, separation of component concept, preference relationship between descriptors andentry terms, the methods of recording of proper nouns and allocation of terms among thesubject areas concern.he subject areas concern.

  • Reverse logistics (RL) covering the flow of products/parts in a reverse direction from product returns to product disposal. Companies are faced with a decision on whether to manage RL in house or to outsource it to a RL third party service provider (3PSP). A survey was conducted in 2004 to study RL outsourcing practices. Through the survey, various RL functions outsourced in industry are identified, and the factors considered to decide between in-house vs. outsourcing RL management are studied along with their importance. In addition, this research presents the performance measures of a 3PSP and problems faced by companies while managing RL in-house and outsourcing.
