  • Unpaved forest roads are common accessways in mountain areas being used for forestry purposes. The presence of forest roads produces large volumes of surface runoff and sediment yield due to changes in soil properties and hillslope profile. Rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to estimate the impacts of above-ground vegetation and antecedent soil water condition on hydrology and sediment processes. A total of 9 small plots($1m{\times}0.5m$) were installed to represent different road surface conditions: no-vegetation(3 plots), vegetated surface(3 plots), and cleared vegetation surface(3 plots). Experiments were carried out on dry, wet, and very wet soil moisture conditions for each plot. Above ground parts of vegetation on road surface influenced significantly on surface runoff. Runoff from no-vegetation roads(39.24L) was greater than that from vegetated(25.05L), while cleared-vegetation condition is similar to no-vegetation roads(39.72L). Runoff rate responded in a similar way to runoff volume. Soil erosion was also controlled by land cover, but the magnitude is little than that of surface runoff. Even though slight differences among antecedent soil moisture conditions were found on both runoff and soil erosion, runoff rate and soil losses were increased in very wet condition, followed by wet condition. The experiments suggest that vegetation cover on forest road surface seems most effective way to reduce surface runoff and soil erosion during storm periods.

  • We propose a method using the genetic algorithm to solve the maximum set cover problem. It is needed for scheduling the power of sensor nodes in extending the lifetime of the wireless sensor network with variable sensing range. The existing Greedy Heuristic method calculates the power scheduling of sensor nodes repeatedly in the process of operation, and so the communication traffic of sensor nodes is increased. The proposed method reduces the amount of communication traffic of sensor nodes, and so the energies of nodes are saved, and the lifetime of network can be extended. The effectiveness of this method was verified through computer simulation, and considering the energy losses of communication operations about 10% in the network lifetime is improved.

  • Fracture characteristics for plate and dome shapes of glass filled ceramics using shock tube were carried out. Glass filled ceramics have been considered as a promising candidate material for the dome port cover of air breathing engine. This part of the air breathing engine has an important role as separated membrane between combustion and external air, and needs the frangible characteristics that the particles of fractured glass filled ceramics should not affect the internal components of combustion. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the fracture pressures for various thicknesses and diameters of shock impact area. Also fracture phenomena of separated membrane using a shock tube compare with analytical method. The experimental apparatus consists of a driver, a driven section and a dump tank. The used material is glass filled ceramic made from Corning company. Specimens have the thickness of 3, 4.5 and 6mm. It is expected that the results obtained from this study can be used in the basic data for the dome port cover design of an air breathing engine.

  • Purpose: This study sought to identify the relationship between knowledge and compliance with cough etiquette among elders in the community. Methods: Participants were 186 olders. Data were collected December 2016 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Mean scores for knowledge and compliance relating to cough etiquette were above average. Several factors were related to significant differences in level of knowledge: education level, use of items to cover a cough, Carrying a handkerchief or tissue, daily frequency of hand washing, awareness of cough etiquette, and prior education on cough etiquette. Compliance differed according to use of items to cover a cough, awareness of cough etiquette, and prior education on cough etiquette. Significant correlations were found between knowledge and compliance with cough etiquette. Awareness of cough etiquette and knowledge of cough etiquette were predictors of cough etiquette compliance. Conclusion: These findings indicate that publicity and education taking into account the characteristics of the elderly are required to improve compliance with cough etiquette among olders. The results of the study can be utilized in health promotional programs for this population.

  • In this paper, we propose novel optics design for media inside near-field recording (NFR) using hemispherical solid immersion lens (HMS). To obtain strong advantage of data protection and high data capacity simultaneously, HMS based near field optics using aplanatic position of super hemisphere is designed. In this design, to improve small optical tolerance of this aplanatic position, additional aspheric lens surface is added on top of the HMS and it is combined with zoom optics which composed of two single lenses having low numerical aperture (NA). Also, to compensate chromatic aberration which happens seriously in optics using blue laser diode, diffractive optical element is used. Using zoom optics, additional aspheric lens surface, and diffractive optical element together, wavefront aberration and chromatic aberration are effectively reduced in broad range of cover layer thickness and wavelength variation. In addition, In this paper, effect of gap induced aberration is investigated by analyzing different behavior of each TM and TE wave for designed media inside dual-layer NFR optics.

  • An invasive disturbance species has caused harm to biodiversity and ecosystem. To address the issue, identifying the characteristics of a habitat for invasive disturbance species is considered for forest management. This study analyzed a status of plant species by field survey based on belt transect method in the capital areas and established a predictive model for invasive disturbance species by logistic regression. As results of the study, the number of herb, vine, and invasive disturbance species and a canopy cover of tree would decrease from the forest edge to core areas (p<0.001). The predictive model was derived with variables of altitude, Topographic Wetness Index, distance to forest edge, and canopy cover of tree. It can be useful in estimating the presence or absence of species and predicting its spatial distribution. Further studies are needed to identify the pathway of introduction, spread, and possibility of germination for understanding the status of invasive disturbance species in more depth.

  • Node deployment is one of the important problems in achieving good quality of service in wireless sensor network. The purpose of this paper is to develop an interactive system that supports user's decision makings in designing sensor fields. The system provides grid-based initial deployment algorithm supporting three types of node deployment pattern, area-fill, path-cover, and barrier-cover deployment pattern. After initial deployment, an iterative refinement algorithm can be applied, which takes care of the irregularity of the deployment area and the heterogeneity of sensors. The proposed system helps users to effectively deploy nodes in the sensor field, analyse the detection performance of the deployment, and perform network simulations. The developed system can be utilized as a part of the development environment of the surveillance sensor network system.
