  • In this paper a novel power converter for some notches generation in the point of common coupling is described. The magnitude, width, polarity, and position of the notches generated by the proposed scheme can be varied arbitrary with simple control. The scheme has good features of simple structure, high reliability, low cost, high efficiency, and the capability of arbitrary several notches generation. The converter can be used for the test of custom power devices such as UPS, DVR, active power filter, etc. The circuit operation is described and the usefulness of the scheme is verified through simulations.

  • The fluid-structure interaction of a towed body is simulated using a developed code, which is based on the flux-difference splitting scheme on the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method. To improve the stability in the coupling between the fluid and structure domains, a scheme is used, in which the effects of structure deformation are treated implicitly. The developed code is validated for the fluid-structure interaction problem through comparisons with other results on the vortex-induced vibration of elastically mounted cylinders. To simulate behavior of a towed body, an asymmetric tension modelling for a towing cable is suggested. In the suggested model, the tension is proportional to the elongation of the cable, but the cable has no effect on the body motion whenever the distance between the endpoints of the cable is smaller than the original length of the cable. The fluid-structure interactions of a towed body are simulated on the basis of different parameters of the towing cables. It is observed that the suggested tension model predicts the snapping for a shorter towing cable, which is in accordance with the reported results.

  • To enhance the reliability of two-motor drive systems, this paper proposes an improved direct torque control (DTC) scheme (P-DTC) for five-leg dual-PMSM drive systems. First, the topology of a five-leg dual-PMSM drive system is illustrated. To clarify the analysis of the P-DTC, the standard DTC scheme for three-phase drive systems is presented. The operation of a five-leg dual-PMSM drive system is classified into three situations according to the definitions of the switching-vector unions. Compared with the existing DTC scheme (R-DTC), the P-DTC can minimize the replacement of active switching-vectors to zero switching-vectors. When this replacement cannot be avoided, the P-DTC uses a proposed master-slave selection principle to minimize the system error. Comparing with the R-DTC, the P-DTC has lower torque ripples, a wider speed range and a faster torque increasing response. Experiments have been carried out in the coupling and independent modes, and the effectiveness of the P-DTC is verified by the obtained results.

  • The computations of chemically reacting laminar and turbulent flows are performed using the preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver coupled with turbulent transport and multi-species equations. A low-Reynolds number $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model proposed by Chien is used. The presence of the turbulent kinetic energy tenn in the momentum equation can materially affect the overall stability of the fluids-turbulence system. Because of this coupling effect, a fully coupled formulation is desirable and this approach is taken in the present study. Choi and Merkle's preconditioning technique is used to overcome the convergence difficulties occurred at low speed flows. The numerical scheme used for the present study is based on the implicit upwind ADI algorithm and is validated through the comparisons of computational and experimental results for laminar methane-air diffusion flame and $ H_2/O_2$ reacting turbulent shear flow. Preconditioning formulation shows better convergence characteristics than that of non-preconditioned system by approximately five times as much.

  • I have investigated a scheme for suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers. The scheme makes use of a sampled Bragg grating fabricated within the fiber used for transmitting intense Q-switched pulses. The grating is designed such that the spectrum of the Stokes pulse generated through stimulated Brillouin scattering falls entirely within its stop band. I show numerically that the number of sampled fiber Bragg gratings in 1 m is applied directly to suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering rather than the coupling coefficient. This prevents the build up of the backward-propagating Stokes wave and mitigates the deleterious effects of stimulated Brillouin scattering. The simulation shows that 15 ns pulses with 1 kW peak power can be transmitted though a 1 m-long fiber with little energy loss using this scheme.

  • Numerical methodology to solve ship springing problem, which is basically fluid-structure interaction problem, was explored in this study. Solution of this hydroelasticity problem was sought by coupling higher order B-spline Rankine panel method and finite element method in time domain, each of which is introduced for fluid and structure domain respectively. Even though varieties of different combinations in terms of numerical scheme are possible and have been tried by many researchers to solve the problem, no systematic study regarding the characteristics of each scheme has been done so far. Here, extensive case studies have been done on the numerical schemes especially focusing on the iteration method, FE analysis of beam-like structure, handling of forward speed problem and so on. Two different iteration scheme, Newton style one and fixed point iteration, were tried in this study and results were compared between the two. For the solution of the FE-based equation of motion, direct integration and modal superposition method were compared with each other from the viewpoint of its efficiency and accuracy. Finally, calculation of second derivative of basis potential, which is difficult to obtain with accuracy within grid-based method like BEM was discussed.

  • In this paper, a novel quasi-direct power control (Q-DPC) scheme based on a resonant frequency adaptive proportional-resonant (PR) current controller with a variable frequency resonant phase locked loop (RPLL) is proposed, which can achieve a fast power response with a unity power factor. It can also adapt to variations of the generator frequency in T-type Three-level shaft synchronous generator (SSG) converters. The PR controller under the static α-β frame is designed to track ac signals and to avert the strong cross coupling under the rotating d-q frame. The fundamental frequency can be precisely acquired by a RPLL from the generator terminal voltage which is distorted by harmonics. Thus, the resonant frequency of the PR controller can be confirmed exactly with optimized performance. Based on an instantaneous power balance, the load power feed-forward is added to the power command to improve the anti-disturbance performance of the dc-link. Simulations based on MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results obtained from a 75kW prototype validate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

  • This paper suggests a comprehensive method to describe architectural components for supporting Korean Traditional Building design with only small components set in CAD system. Korean traditional buildings can be classified variously based on the their size, usage and structure type(whether ornament part, namely Gongpo, is in there or not). Moreover components can be varied according to the combining rule between them. If all of these components are presented, these tremendous components rather prevent the efficient design of traditional buildings. In order to solve this problem we present object-oriented approach to describe versatile components as one template if they are same in functional aspects. From the template, many similar instances can be derived according to the attribute value. The templates are designed in order to reflect the coupling scheme between components in the relative parameters of the templates. It leads effects of minimizing error which can be occurred frequently in the process of traditional building design.

  • Accurate measurements of the microwave surface resistance (Rs) of high temperature superconductor (HTS) films are important with regard to applications of HTS materials for wireless communications. As the surface resistance values of HTS films are usually extracted from the measured unloaded quality factor ($Q_0$) of resonators made of HTS films, it is essential to measure the resonator $Q_0$ with accuracy. The $TE_{011}\;mode\;Q_0$ of sapphire resonators with the endplates made of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) film on $LaAlO_3$ is measured by using the S-parameter circle-fit method at a frequency of about 19.6 GHz and temperatures of 30 K to 90 K, which is compared with the measured values by using the Lorentzian-fit method. Good agreements are found between the two sets of $Q_0$ values measured by using the two different methods whether the resonator is used in a weak-coupling scheme or a strong-coupling scheme, showing reliability of both methods fur measuring the resonator $Q_0$ accurately. The $Q_0$ of sapphire resonators with a gap between the top plate and the rest of the resonator is also discussed.

  • In solid mechanics, the peridynamics theory has provided a suitable framework for material failure and damage propagation simulation. Peridynamics is computationally expensive since it is required to solve enormous nonlocal interactions based upon integro-differential equations. Thus, multiscale coupling methods with other local models are of interest for efficient and accurate implementations of peridynamics. In this study, peridynamic models are restricted to regions where discontinuities or stress concentrations are present. In the domains characterized by smooth displacements, classical local models can be employed. We introduce a recently developed blending scheme to concurrently couple bond-based peridynamic models and the Navier equation of classical elasticity. We demonstrate numerically that the proposed blended model is suitable for point loads and static fracture, suggesting an alternative framework for cases where peridynamic models are too expensive, while classical local models are not accurate enough.
