  • The accuracy of analytical results in response to the use of different additives ($NH_4Cl$, KCl, $LaCl_3$) and oxidant gases was evaluated and compared by using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). Identification of spectroscopic interferences and possible improvements in Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) analysis were also discussed. The average accuracies of total chromium using Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) were found to be 72.1~94.2% in air/acetylene flame condition by AAS, and they were improved to 100.5~110.5% when the oxidants was changed to nitrous oxide rather than adding the additives. The field samples showed similar trends to CRMs, but chromium concentrations were highly variable depending on analytical conditions. The average accuracies using CRMs were estimated to be 89.3~166.1% by ICP-AES, and improved to below 121.7% after eliminating iron interference. Field samples with low chromium and high iron concentration were measured to be > 30% lower in total chromium concentrations by ICP-AES than AAS in nitrous oxide/acetylene flame. Total chromium concentrations in soil could be analyzed with better accuracy under nitrous oxide/acetylene flame by AAS because it was more effective to increase the temperature of the flame than to eliminate the chemical interference for maximizing atomization of chromium. When using ICP-AES, interference substances, total chromium levels, and analytical conditions should be also considered.

  • The main purpose of this research is to utilize simple mathematical models to depict the vibration behavior and the resulted sound field of a piezoelectric disk for ultrasonic transducers. Instead of using 1-D vibration model, coupled effect between the thickness and the radial motions was considered to be close to the real vibration behavior. Moreover, Huygens-Fresnel principle was used in both incident and reflected waves to analyze the sound field under obstacles in finite distance. Results of the tested piezoelectric disk show that, discrepancies between the simulation and experiment are 2.5% for resonant frequency and 12% for resulted sound field. Therefore, the proposed method can be used to reduce the complexity in modeling vibration problems, and increase the reliability on analyzing piezoeletric transducers in the design stage.

  • In order to assess the environmental risk of pesticides, information is usually required on the likelihood of exposure of organisms to the constituents of pesticides, expressed as a predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) and the likely effects of the constituents of pesticides on aquatic and terrestrial organisms, expressed as a predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs). In this paper, the pesticide fate model, RICEWQ alone and coupled with the pesticide movement model, RIVWQ was used to simulate the potential for predicting the environmental concentrations of pesticides in paddy fields and adjacent surface water systems. The RICEWQ model was successfully calibrated against field data in poinding depth for paddy field. For the assessment of importance for water and pesticide management conditions and field scales, the integrated RICEWQ-RIVWQ model was simulated by the scenario analysis. The results of this study can be used as a basic information for assessing the environmental risk of pesticides.

  • Is this study it is proposed a method which is able to compute preciously using time-difference method to the air-gap magnetic field in electric machines take into account of eddy current induced. The air-gap magnetic field has slot harmonics which are due to the structure of machines and the shape of slot harmonics varies with the related positions of slots when the rotor moves. Accordingly, considering the influence of slot-harmonics, we coupled macro-air-gap element with first-order triangular elements in domain and used direct-convergence method for magnetic saturation.

  • The work described in this study concerns the development of a disposable amperometric sensor for the electrochemical detection of a well-known aqueous pollutant, free available chlorine (FAC). The FAC sensor developed used screen printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) coupled with immobilised syringaldazine, commonly used as an indicator in photometric FAC detection, which was directly immobilised on the surface of SPCEs using a photopolymer PVA-SbQ. To enable in-field analysis of FAC, a prototype hand-held electrochemical analyzer has been developed to withstand the environment with its rugged design and environmentally sealed connections; it operates from two PP3 (9 volt) batteries and is comparable in accuracy and sensitivity to commercial bench top systems. The sensitivity of the FAC sensor developed was $3.5{\;}nA{\mu}M^{-1}cm^{-2}$ and the detection limit for FAC was found to be $2.0{\;}{\mu}M$.

  • In this paper, we propose the integrated design method that enables multi-physics modeling and coupled-field analysis by connecting an electromagnetic field and a structural field. We design the 3-axis moving magnet type actuator that has the high structural stiffness and the effective electromagnetic circuit generating large electromagnetic force. Through design of experiments (DOE) and optimization, the designed actuator is optimized and satisfies high dynamic characteristics over the desired specifications.

  • The present paper employs nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) to study buckling behavior of functionally graded magneto-electro-thermo-elastic (FG-METE) nanoshells under various physical fields. NSGT modeling of the nanoshell contains two size parameters, one related to nonlocal stress field and another related to strain gradients. It is considered that mechanical, thermal, electrical and magnetic loads are exerted to the nanoshell. Temperature field has uniform and linear variation in nanoshell thickness. According to a power-law function, piezo-magnetic, thermal and mechanical properties of the nanoshell are considered to be graded in thickness direction. Five coupled governing equations have been obtained by using Hamilton's principle and then solved implementing Galerkin's method. Influences of temperature field, electric voltage, magnetic potential, nonlocality, strain gradient parameter and FG material exponent on buckling loads of the FG-METE nanoshell have been studied in detail.

  • Electromagnetic Forming (EMF) technology such as magnetic pulse forming, which is one of the high velocity forming methods, has been used for the joining and forming process in various industry fields. This method could be derived a series of deformation of sheet metal by using a strong magnetic field. In this study, numerical approach by finite element simulation of the electromagnetic forming process was presented. A transient electromagnetic finite element code was used to obtain the numerical model of the time-varying currents that are discharged through the coil in order to obtain the transient magnetic forces. Also, the body forces generated in electromagnetic field were used as the loading condition to analyze deformation of thin sheet metal workpiece using explicit dynamic finite element code. In this study, after finite element analysis for thin sheet metal forming process with free surface configuration was performed, analytical approach for a dimpled shape by using EMF was carried out. Furthermore, the simulated results of the dimpled shape by EMF were compared with that by a conventional solid tool in view of the deformed shape. From the results of finite element analysis, it is confirmed that the EMF process could be applied to thin sheet metal forming.

  • Various linear system solvers with multi-physics analysis schemes are compared focusing on the near-field region considering thermal-hydraulic-chemical (THC) coupled multi-physics phenomena. APro, developed at KAERI for total system performance assessment (TSPA), performs a finite element analysis with COMSOL, for which the various combinations of linear system solvers and multi-physics analysis schemes should to be compared. The KBS-3 type disposal system proposed by Sweden is set as the target system and the near-field region, which accounts for most of the computational burden is considered. For comparison of numerical analysis methods, the computing time and memory requirement are the main concerns and thus the simulation time is set up to one year. With a single deposition hole problem, PARDISO and GMRES-SSOR are selected as representative direct and iterative solvers respectively. The performance of representative linear system solvers is then examined through a problem with an increasing number of deposition holes and the GMRES-SSOR solver with a segregated scheme shows the best performance with respect to the computing time and memory requirement. The results of the comparative analysis are expected to provide a good guideline to choose better numerical analysis methods for TSPA.

  • A large electric system of a vacuum circuit breaker(VCB) has been studied for the electro-thermal analysis by finite element methods. Since the heat generation in VCB causes not only energy loss but deterioration of the VCB system with oxidization of parts, the overheating of the system must be prevented. For the analysis, a finite element formulation is derived for both electric analysis and thermal analysis that are coupled together. Two sets of formulations are uncoupled after finite dimensional approximation. First, the electric potential is obtained for the entire field and scaled to the given electric current. The electric field obtained is then used to calculate the heat generation in the VCB system including contacts and connections for the calculation of the temperature distribution in the entire domain. The finite element analysis is carried out to study the effect of shapes and locations of contacts and connections. From the results, the existing VCB has been modified to enhance its capacity with reduction of heat generation and temperature elevation.
