  • The frequency of a traditional tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) depends solely on the length of liquid column, which imposes certain restrictions on its application to long span cable-stayed bridges during construction. The configuration of a cable-stayed bridge varies from different construction stages and so do its natural frequencies. It is thus difficult to apply TLCD with a fixed configuration to the bridge during construction or it is not economical to design a series of TLCD with different liquid lengths to suit for various construction stages. Semi-active tuned liquid column damper (SATLCD) with adaptive frequency tuning capacity is studied in this paper for buffeting response control of a long span cable-stayed bridge during construction. The frequency of SATLCD can be adjusted by active control of air pressures inside the air chamber at the two ends of the container. The performance of SATLCD for suppressing combined lateral and torsional vibration of a real long span cable-stayed bridge during construction stage is numerically investigated using a finite element-based approach. The finite element model of SATLCD is also developed and incorporated into the finite element model of the bridge for predicting buffeting response of the coupled SATLCD-bridge system in the time domain. The investigations show that with a fixed container configuration, the SATLCD with adaptive frequency tuning can effectively reduce buffeting response of the bridge during various construction stages.

  • In this study, the thermal-structural behavior of the combustor assembly of 200 kW micro gas turbine system was performed. The typical combustor assembly consists of a Liner, Inner & Outer Case, Burner and Nozzle ring, etc. There are some gaps and friction elements between the components to compensate for the different thermal expansions of various components. Therefore, the developed finite element model includes nonlinear elements. The boundary support conditions of the combustor assembly significantly affect the stress distribution due to the high temperature gradient. This paper deals with parametric studies to quantitatively determine the effects of the variation of the support conditions on the stress distribution and deformation of various components of combustor assembly. These results may be useful for the design of the combustor assembly.

  • "The Act on Medication Treatment of Sexual Impulse of Sex Offenders" known as chemical castration has been effective since July 2011 in Korea. According to the law, monitoring of male sex hormone in urine is enforced to request National Forensic Service more than once a month after injection of medicine designed to reduce sex impulse. We established a rapid and sensitive method for the monitoring of testosterone (T) and epitestosterone (E) in human urine by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Three mL of urine was pretreated by solid-phase extraction for purification and performed enzymatic hydrolysis. The pretreated samples were extracted twice with 2 ml of ethyl acetate and n-hexane (2 : 3). The separation was applied on Thermo Hypersil GOLD C18 column ($1.9{\mu}m$, $100{\times}2.1mm$). A gradient elution of methanol and water of 0.1% formic acid were used as mobile phase and the retention time was less than 10 min. LC-MS/MS system coupled with an electrospray ionization source was performed in multiple reaction monitoring mode. The transitions of the analytes executed as following: m/z $289{\rightarrow}97$, 109 for T and E, m/z $292{\rightarrow}109$ for $T-d_3$ and $E-d_3$ as internal standards. The validation results of the method were satisfactory. The limits of detection were 0.05 ng/ml and the limits of quantification were 0.1 ng/ml. This method was successfully applied to real human urine sample. The developed method will be useful for monitoring T/E ratio in urine of sex offenders.

  • In this paper, a repeater antenna operating at MICS and ISM bands is proposed and the antenna performance including the human body effect is investigated. The proposed antenna is composed of a ZOR(Zeroth Order Resonator) and a loop antenna. A loop antenna is operated at ISM band and a loop antenna capacitively coupled with a ZOR acts as an antenna for MICS band. Simulation was carried out in order to analyze the effects of human body on antenna performance when a human body is located in the near field of an antenna. According to the simulated and measured results, the proposed antenna has -10 dB $S_{11}$ bandwidth wide enough to cover both MICS and ISM bands. The measured peak gains are -28.53 dBi and 3.85 dBi at MICS and ISM band, respectively. The dual band and radiation properties of the proposed antenna are well suited for the WBAN repeater system.

  • It is essential to understand the hydraulic characteristics of rivers for increasing flood-control capacity and operating hydraulic structures efficiently. Multi-dimensional models can be the proper measures to obtain the detailed information on the hydraulic characteristics of rivers. But huge amount of data and time-consuming work have been the obstacle for applying multi-dimensional models. In this study, simulation technique with multi-dimensional model(EFDC), coupled with COSFIM and FLDWAV, has been developed and applied to the real river system for verification. Developed technique can offers spatial and grid unit information as well as line and section unit information from 1-D modeling. It is considered that the coupling simulation technique can provide useful hydraulic information for river management and treatment.

  • In this paper, a new encryption method for a binary image using Phase modulation and Fourier transform is proposed. For decryption we use the characteristics of square law detector. In encryption process, a key image is obtained by phase modulation of 256 level random pattern and its Fourier transformation, and input image is encrypted by Fourier transforming the multiplication of the phase modulated random pattern and phase modulated input image. The encrypted image and key image have only phase information, so they can not be copied or counterfeited and the original image can not be decrypted without the key image. To reconstruct the original image, each phase mask of the key image and the encrypted image must be placed on each path of the Mach-Zehnder interferometry with Fourier transform lens and the output image is obtained in the form of intensity in the CCD(Charge Coupled Device) camera. The real-time decryption is possible in the proposed system by use of a LCD as a phase modulator and a CCD camera as an intensity detector. The proposed method shows a good performance in the computer simulation and optical experiment as an encryption scheme.

  • Magnetite, Fe3O4, is a ferrimagnet with a cubic inverse spinel structure and exhibits a metal-insulator, Verwey, transition at about 120 K.[1] It is predicted to possess as half-metallic nature, 100% spin polarization, and high Curie temperature (850 K). Cobalt ferrite is one of the most important members of the ferrite family, which is characterized by its high coercivity, moderate magnetization and very high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. It has been reported that the CoFe2O4/Fe3O4 bilayers represent an unusual exchange-coupled system whose properties are due to the nature of the oxide-oxide super-exchange interactions at the interface [2]. In order to evaluate the effect of interface interactions on magnetic and transport properties of ferrite and cobalt ferrite, the CoFe2O4/Fe3O4 superlattices on MgO (100) substrate have been fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with the wave lengths of 50, and $200{\AA}$, called $25{\AA}/25{\AA}$ and $100{\AA}/100{\AA}$, respectively. Streaky RHEED patterns in sample $25{\AA}/25{\AA}$ indicate a very smooth surface and interface between layers. HR-TEM image show the good crystalline of sample $25{\AA}/25{\AA}$. Interestingly, magnetization curves showed a strong antiferromagnetic order, which was formed at the interfaces.

  • A radio-frequency (RF) Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) torch system was used for boron-nitride nano-tube (BNNT) synthesis. Because of electrodeless plasma generation, no electrode pollution and effective heating transfer during nano-material synthesis can be realized. For stable plasma generation, argon and nitrogen gases were injected with 60 kW grid power in the difference pressure from 200 Torr to 630 Torr. Varying hydrogen gas flow rate from 0 to 20 slpm, the electrical and optical plasma properties were investigated. Through the spectroscopic analysis of atomic argon line, hydrogen line and nitrogen molecular band, we investigated the plasma electron excitation temperature, gas temperature and electron density. Based on the plasma characterization, we performed the synthesis of BNNT by inserting 0.5~1 um hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) powder into the plasma. We analysis the structure characterization of BNNT by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), also grasp the ingredient of BNNT by EELS (Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy) and Raman spectroscopy. We treated bundles of BNNT with the atmospheric pressure plasma, so that we grow the surface morphology in the water attachment of BNNT. We reduce the advancing contact angle to purity bundles of BNNT.

  • In this study, we study the effects of CF4 plasma treatment on the characteristics of enhancement mode (E-mode) AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs). The CF4 plasma is generated by inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE) system. The CF4 gas is decomposed into fluorine ions by ICP-RIE and then fluorine ions will effect the AlGaN/GaN interface to inhibit the electron transport of two dimension electron gas (2DEG) and increase channel resistance. The CF4 plasma method neither like the recessed type which have to utilize Cl2/BCl3 to etch semiconductor layer nor ion implantation needed high power to implant ions into semiconductor. Both of techniques will cause semiconductor damage. In the experiment, the CF4 treatment time are 0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 seconds. It was found that the devices treated 100 seconds showed best electric performance. In order to prove fluorine ions existing and CF4 plasma treatment not etch epitaxial layer, the secondary ion mass spectrometer confirmed fluorine ions truly existing in the sample which treatment time 100 seconds. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy showed that the sample treated time 100 seconds did not have etch phenomena. Atomic layer deposition is used to grow Al2O3 with thickness 10, 20, 30 and 40 nm. In electrical measurement, the device that deposited 20-nm-thickness Al2O3 showed excellent current ability, the forward saturation current of 210 mA/mm, transconductance (gm) of 44.1 mS/mm and threshold voltage of 2.28 V, ION/IOFF reach to 108. As IV concerning the breakdown voltage measurement, all kinds of samples can reach to 1450 V.
