  • Air foil bearing supports the rotating journal using hydrodynamic force generated at thin air film. The bearing performances, stiffness, damping coefficient and load capacity, depend on the rotating speed and the performance of the elastic foundation, bump foil. The main focus of this study is to decide the dynamic performance of corrugated bump foil, structural stiffness and Coulomb damping caused by friction between bump foil and top foil/bump foil and housing. Structural stiffness is determined by the bump shape (bump height, pitch and bump thickness), dry-friction, and interacting force filed up to fixed end. So, the change of the characteristics was considered as the parameters change. The air foil bearing specification for analysis follows the general size; diameter 38.1 mm and length 38.1 mm (L/D=1.0). The results show that the stiffness at the fixed end is more than the stiffness at the free end, Coulomb damping is more at the fixed end due to the small displacement, and two dynamic characteristics are dependent on each other.

  • The modeling and parameter estimation of a damped one-degree-of-freedom mass-spring system is examined. This paper presents a method for estimating the system parameters (damping coefficients and natural frequency) from measured free-vibration motion of a system that is modeled to include both subcritical viscous damping and kinetic Coulomb friction. The method applies a commercially available least-squares curve-fitting software function to fit the known solution of the equations of motion to the measured response. The method was tested through numerical simulation, and it was applied to experimental data collected from a laboratory mass-spring apparatus. The mass of this apparatus translates on linear bearings, which are the primary source of light inherent damping. Results indicate that the curve-fitting method is effective and accurate for both perfect and noisy measurements from a lightly damped mass-spring system.

  • The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the control performance of a coulomb friction damper(CFD) for controlling the inelastic behavior of seismically excited structures, The seismic performances of various buildings are evaluated using capacity spectrum method(CSM), and the additional dampings are calculated If the evaluated performance levels of the buildings are below the target level. Maximum friction force of the CFD to achieve additional damping is provided using the concept of equivalent viscous damping, Numerical simulations for single degree of freedom(SDOF) systems with various structural periods and post yield stiffness ratios demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

  • This paper presents the theoretical model and analysis results to investigate the effect of Coulomb damping in the sub-structure of a foil bearing. Vertical and horizontal deflection of a bump is restricted by friction of the bump. Equivalent viscous damping of the bump foil is derived from the Coulomb friction. Dynamic equation of the bump is constituted by stiffness and damping terms. The air film is modeled by the compressible Reynolds equation. A perturbation approach and finite difference numerical method is used to determine the static and dynamic performance of the bearing from the coupled fluid-structural model. The analysis result shows that the static and dynamic performance is enhanced by the bump friction.

  • An Amplitude Proportional Friction Damper (APFD), in which the friction force is proportional to the system displacement, has been introduced and mathematically modeled. To understand the damping characteristics of APFD, analytical solutions for the impulse response has been derivedand compared to the viscous damper. It is found that APFD system has very similar damping characteristics to viscous damper even though it is a friction damper. APFD may be used as a cost-effective substitution for the viscous damper and could also be used to improve the simple friction or Coulomb dampersince APFD works with no stick-slip and always returns to original position when external disturbance is disappeared.

  • An Amplitude Proportional Friction Damper (APFD) system is considered in order to improve the stick-slip characteristics of Coulomb friction damper. The frictional force is proportional to the amplitude in APFD system and the system is non-linear as is Coulomb damper system. The free vibration analysis on an 1-DOF system has conducted to demonstrate the characteristics of the APFD system and the results show that the APFD system has similar damping characteristics to the viscous damper system. It is concluded that the APFD system may become a cost effective substitution for the viscous damper and it also has certain advantages over Coulomb damper system since the APFD system can be designed to work with no stick-slip.
