Data were collected December 2016 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Mean scores for knowledge and compliance relating to cough etiquette were above average. Several factors were related to significant differences in level of knowledge: education level, use of items to cover a cough, Carrying a handkerchief or tissue, daily frequency of hand washing, awareness of cough etiquette, and prior education on cough etiquette. Compliance differed according to use of items to cover a cough, awareness of cough etiquette, and prior education on cough etiquette. Significant correlations were found between knowledge and compliance with cough etiquette. Awareness of cough etiquette and knowledge of cough etiquette were predictors of cough etiquette compliance. Conclusion: These findings indicate that publicity and education taking into account the characteristics of the elderly are required to improve compliance with cough etiquette among olders. The results of the study can be utilized in health promotional programs for this population.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Seonpyejeongcheon-tang (SJT) for chronic cough. Materials and Methods: Thirty-one patients with chronic cough who had treated with SJT between September 2010 and October 2011 were analyzed. We estimated the effectiveness of the treatment by Borg Cough Scale (BCS). Results: Mean period of cough duration was $15.19{\pm}8.70$ and mean period of treatment was $7.58{\pm}2.55$. SJT treatment significantly decreased the score of BCS from $6.32{\pm}1.30$ to $1.84{\pm}0.97$ (p<0.001). Disappearance rate of cough was 32% after SJT treatment. Conclusion: SJT seems to be effective in the treatment of chronic cough. Further studies are recommended to confirm this effect.

  • Cough is an important defensive reflex of the respiratory tract needed to clear and protect the upper airways, but it may become exaggerated and interfere quality of life. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the three most common causes of chronic unexplained cough. Diagnosing GERD related cough is challenging since many patients do not have esophagitis or an increased esophageal acid exposure during 24 h esophageal pH-metry. We treated two patients who had chronic cough, these subjects were diagnosed as Sikjeoksu (Shijisou, 食積嗽) and was administered Pyeongjingeonbi-tang (Pingchenjianpi-tang, 平陳健脾湯). First case had stuffiness below the heart and acid regurgitation with cough, but second case only had cough. After treatment, cough and other symptoms were improved. It showed that we must consider GERD on chronic cough patients.
