  • An experiment was performed to study heat transfer characteristics between corrugated heat exchanger and flat plate type one. While heat capacity(13.86kW) was provided constantly and the flow speed was varied from 2.8 to 17.9m/s, The temperature and the pressure drop were measured. Furthermore, Heat transfer coefficient, Colburn factor and Nusselt number were calculated using them. With increase of the flow speed for both exchangers, the coefficient and the pressure drop increased, but Colburn factor decreased. The coefficient, pressure drop and Colburn factor of the corrugated type were all higher than those of the flat one, which is due to the flow interruption with recirculation and reattachment of the corrugated type. The empirical correlations of Nusselt number were suggested for the tested two heat exchangers.

  • Stiffened plate structure, which is generally used in the various structural design to develope the load carrying capacity, is classified in two groups; one is the plate stiffened with stiffeners, the other is corrugated plate. In the studies on those structures, the studies on the stiffened plates with stiffeners have been much studied with both quantities and qualities according to requirements of the minimum-weight structural design and the development in many industrial fields, especially automobile, ship and aerospace fields, but the studies on the corrugated plates are undeveloped in comparison with the stiffened plates, and also the analytical stiffness on the corrugated plates remains as the imperfect. In the present studies, the analytical method on the stiffness of corrugated plates made by folding is proposed, and the stiffness equation of corrugated plates with some angle is derived and generalized. The purpose of the present study is to contribute to the design of corrugated plates and to determine the optimum aspect ratio for parameters that decide the aspect of corrugated plates.

  • In this paper, after studying structural performance for the representative corrugated steel plate used in Korea, we proposed the optimum shape for section of corrugated steel plate considering a width of steel plates that can be produced currently in the factory. Using AISI(1986) in examination for the performance of the corrugated steel plate, we determined the mechanical limit of the optimum sections considering shear force and bending moment of corrugated steel plate and also determined the geometric limit of them considering formability, shapes and ratio between width of steel plate before forming and that after forming. As a result of examination for performance of steel plate applying algorithm for searching optimal sections algorithm developed in this study to the existing representative corrugated steel plate, allowable force and moment of inertia indicated the maximum values at bending radius 76mm and internal bending angle $50^{\circ}$. And as an application result of the optimum design system that used SS490 with 1,550mm of width and 4,700mm of length considering current production situation in Korea, we developed the new section with more than 2 times of structural performance comparing with existing corrugated steel plate.

  • Conventional plate I-girders are sensitive to local buckling of the web when they are subjected mainly to shear action because the slenderness of the web in out-of-plane direction is much bigger. The local buckling of the web can also cause the distorsion of the plate flange under compression as a thin-walled plate has very low torsional stiffness due to its open section. A new I-girder consisted of corrugated web, a concrete-filled rectangular tubular flange under compression and a plate flange under tension is presented to improve its resistance to local buckling of the web and distorsion of the flat plate flange under compression. Experimental tests on a conventional plate I-girder and a new presented I-girder are conducted to study the failure process and the failure mechanisms of the two specimens. Strain developments at some critical positions, load-lateral displacement curves, and load-deflection curves of the two specimens have all be measured and analyzed. Based on these results, the failure mechanisms of the two kinds of I-girders are discussed.

  • Corrugated steel plate shear wall (CSPSW) as an innovative lateral load resisting system provides various advantages in comparison with the flat steel plate shear wall, including remarkable in-plane and out-of-plane stiffnesses and stability, greater elastic shear buckling stress, increasing the amount of cumulative dissipated energy and maintaining efficiency even in large story drifts. Employment of low yield point (LYP) steel web plate in steel shear walls can dramatically improve their structural performance and prevent early stage instability of the panels. This paper presents a comprehensive structural performance assessment of corrugated low yield point steel plate shear walls having circular openings located in different positions. Accordingly, following experimental verification of CSPSW finite element models, several trapezoidally horizontal CSPSW (H-CSPSW) models having LYP steel web plates as well as circular openings (for ducts) perforated in various locations have been developed to explore their hysteresis behavior, cumulative dissipated energy, lateral stiffness, and ultimate strength under cyclic loading. Obtained results reveal that the rehabilitation of damaged steel shear walls using corrugated LYP steel web plate can enhance their structural performance. Furthermore, choosing a suitable location for the circular opening regarding the design purpose paves the way for the achievement of the shear wall's optimal performance.

  • A series of centrifugal model test was conducted to investigate the distribution of vertical earth pressure on circular ductile underground corrugated steel plate waterway culvert with considering the compaction degree of the backfill in the high landfilled embankment section. The compaction degree of backfill was varied to 80, 85, 90, and 95% at the 53g-level gravity considering the similarity of the site. As a result of this test, the load reduction factor by the arching effect of the top of corrugated steel plate showing ductile behavior nearly agreed with the load reduction factor according to the compaction degree of backfill specified in the AISI(2002) design method. The vertical earth pressure measured at the top of the corrugated steel plate was linearly decreased as the compaction degree increased. The greater the compaction degree of backfill was, the greater the reduction of surface loading on the top of the corrugated steel plate by arching effect. The load decreased by arching effect on top of the corrugated steel plate was transferred to the side backfill of the corrugated steel plate(EP 1) and the outside of backfill(EP 3).

  • A computational analysis of the nonlinear free vibration of corrugated annular plates with shallow sinusoidal corrugations under uniformly static ambient temperature is examined. The governing equations based on Hamilton's principle and nonlinear bending theory of thin shallow shell are established for a corrugated plate with a concentric rigid mass at the center and rotational springs at the outer edges. A simple harmonic function in time is assumed and the time variable is eliminated from partial differential governing equations using the Kantorovich averaging procedure. The resulting ordinary equations, which form a nonlinear two-point boundary value problem in spatial variable, are then solved numerically by shooting method, and the temperature-dependent characteristic relations of frequency vs. amplitude for nonlinear vibration of heated corrugated annular plates are obtained. Several numerical results are presented in both tabular and graphical forms, which demonstrate the accuracy of present method and illustrate the amplitude frequency dependence for the plate under such parameters as ambient temperature, plate geometry, rigid mass and elastic constrain.

  • Applications of corrugated plates (or folded plates) have been recently increasing due to certain economic and structural advantages. Likewise, applications of corrugated plates has been increasing because they are stronger compared to flat plates. Therefore, specifications of corrugated plates should be determined. There are many design details in almost every specification for flat plates. However, except the bending strength and the normal strength, there are no detailed design guides such as shear strength. Thus, it is difficult for engineers to design structures consisting of corrugated plates. As such, engineers need a guide in designing corrugated plates. Extensive numerical study was conducted in order to identify the relationship between the shear strength and geometric conditions for corrugated plates. An eight-node thin shell element (QSL8) of the commercial program LUSAS (version 13.2) was used. The study was able to come up with a formula that helps determine the shear strength of corrugated plates under various geometric conditions, the size of corrugation, the curvature of corrugation, and the thickness of the corrugated plate. Likewise, corrugated plates were found to have a higher shear buckling strength than flat plates.

  • Sandwich structures, which are composed of a thick core between two faces, are commonly used in many engineering applications because they combine high stiffness and strength with low weight. Accordingly, the usage of sandwich structure is very widely applied to the aircraft, the automobile and marine industry, etc., because of these advantages. In this paper, we have investigated the buckling protection of an inner structure plate and the useful corrugated configuration for contact, and the fabrication method of the inner structure plate for large area using the continuous molding process. Also, we have guaranteed the accuracy of the molding process through the micro corrugated mold fabrication and secured the accuracy and analyzed aspect properties of the inner structure plate fabricated for a large area using the partial mold process.

  • This paper represents an electrostatic micro plate resonator which consists of a rigid plate suspended with four bridges and a counter electrode. The bridges of the resonator are designed corrugated so that the residual stress are released. The FEM simulation results confirmed that the deflection characteristic of the corrugated bridge is hardly affected by the initial residual tensile stress. One resonator with the corrugated bridges and the other with the flat bridges were fabricated by the boron diffusion process and the anisotropic etch process. The vertical deflection of the fabricated electrostatic resonator was measured with a laser vibrometer, and the data were compared with the calculation results. The deflection of the resonator with the flat bridges is smaller than the deflection of that with the corrugated ones because of the residual stress. The residual stress release effect was confirmed by the fact that the measured deflection of the resonator with the corrugated bridges in close to the calculated deflection of the resonator with the flat ones with the initial stress neglected.
