Freshness Extension of ‘Fuji’Apple to Packaging materials (포장재가 ‘후지’사과의 신선도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was measured weight loss, total ascorbic acid, titratable acidity, and soluble solids content to investigate the effect of EPS(expanded polystyrene foam, foaming rate 55 times V/W) box, LDPE film pouches and double wall corrugated fiberboard box during storage at 20$\^{C}$. Weight loss of apple packed with corrugated paperboard box after 40 days storage was 5.7%, arid those of LDPE, CE(zeolited coated film) film and EPS box were 0.2-0.5%. Ascorbic acid content of apple packed with LDPE, CE, EPS was higher than that of control. Titratable acidity and total soluble solid content of control were changed 40% and 10%, but the EPS were changed 27% and 4%, respectively. Overall appearances of ‘Fuji’apple packed with LDPE, CE and EPS were better than that of control.

  • Cracking of scored or creased lines on boards is a serious problem in converting process of corrugated fiberboard. It is important to reduce the possibility of score crack in advance by controlling the related quality factors of linerboard. To find out the key properties affecting score crack, we carried out the correlation analysis between score crack and physical properties of linerboards. Score crack was evaluated by visual rating on surface crack after folding a linerboard using laboratory folding resistance tester. Thickness of linerboard was the most important factor to score crack. The critical limits of thickness and strain can be determined by correlation analysis for reducing the possibility of score crack.

Effects of Relative humidity Conditions on the Compressive Strength Changes of Corrugating Mediums (상대습도조건에 따른 골심지의 압축강도 변화에 관한 연구)

  • Changes in the compressive strength of four typical corrugating mediums (K$_2$A, AS and S) as affected by relative humidity conditions were compared and their relative cost effectiveness was analysed. All mediums lost their compressive strength as relative humidity increased. at the relative humidity of 93% , As medium lost 58% of its initial strength while S medium did about 40%. Calculations of compress factor and compress factor by price indicated that $K_2$ medium was the most cost effective and maintained the highest compressive strength among the mediums tested. It was recommended that $K_2$ medium could be effectively used to make corrugated fiberboard especially for fresh agricultural product packaging .

  • 배 포장용 골판지 상자의 자유낙하 실험을 통하여 완충재로써의 골판지 상자에 대한 충격력을 분석하기 위한 시스템을 구성하고 계측 및 분석용 컴퓨터 프로그램을 작성하여 자유낙하에 의한 배 골판지 포장상자의 충격력을 분석하였으며, 배 골판지 포장상자의 낙하높이에 따른 배의 손상정도는 낙하높이가 높아짐에 따라 손상이 심하고 낙하높이가 낮은 25cm에서도 진동에 의한 손상지수보다는 훨씬 큼을 알 수가 있었다. 이것은 자유낙하에 의한 골판지의 충격력이 배에 전달되어 멍이 발생하는 것으로, 진동에 의한 변위 증폭 및 압상에 의한 손상보다 낙하 충격력에 의한 손상이 더 큰 것을 알 수가 있었으며, 배 골판지 포장상자의 적재 및 하역 작업시에는 낮은 낙하높이에서도 포장상자를 떨어뜨리지 않도록 주의를 하여야 할 것이다.

Preliminary Studies on the Quality Changes of Eggplant as Influenced by Active Packaging

  • The effects of active packaging on the surface stiffness, mass, volume, density and weight changes of fresh as well as stored eggplant were studied at 11 and $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days with active packaging material Type 1 and 2 and control. Mass, volume, and surface stiffness of eggplant decreased linearly throughout the storage period regardless of storage conditions; while the mass density showed a reverse trend in the ease of $11^{\circ}C$ storage. Reduction rate of mass, mass density and weight was observed minimum at $25^{\circ}C$ storage temperature with active packaging Type 1. The weight of eggplant decreased at a higher rate in the initial 4 days compared to that in the later period of storage regardless of storage temperature and type of packaging.

  • Fruits are subjected to complex dynamic stresses in the transportation environment. During a long journey form the production area to markets, there is always some degree of vibration present. Vibration inputs are transmitted from the vehicle through the packaging to the fruit. Inside, these cause sustained bouncing of fruits against each other and container wall. These steady state vibration input may cause serious fruit injury, and this damage is particularly severe whenever the fruit inside the package is free to bounce, and is vibrated at its resonant frequency. The determination of the resonant frequencies of the fruit may help the packaging designer to determine the proper packaging system providing adequate protection for the fruit, and to understand the complex interaction between the components of fruit when they relate to expected transportation vibration inputs.   • To improve water resistance of paperboard used to manufacture the corrugated boxes, effect of surface coating of the liner- board with Na-alginate was investigated by determining the optimum processing conditions such as a optimum alginate concentration for surface coating, plasticizer content, concentration of divalent cations their immersion times, For the surface coating of the liner-board, 2.5% Na-alginate solution was found to be the optimum concentration, and the concentration of glycerol used as plasticizer was effective when 35% alginate concentration was use was Used Immersion of the alginate coated paperboard for 3 min in a $CaCl_2$ solution improved the water resistance properties. As a divalent cation for the insolubilization of the alginate films, $Cu^{2+}$ was found to be as effective as $Ca^{2+}$. Among the platicizers tested, sorbitol was the most effective in reducing water vapor permeability and water solubility of alginate coated paperboard.

  • 농산물 포장화물의 경우 농산물의 손상은 겉포장 상자의 파손에 의한 압상이 주요 원인이다. 따라서 농산물 상자의 경우 압축강도를 특히 중요시 여기고 있으며, 한국산업규격을 비롯해 각종 농산물 관련 규정에서는 압축강도에 의한 상자의 품질관리를 규정화 하고 있다. 골판지 상자의 압축강도는 원단인 골판지의 구성 원지들(라이너, 골심지)의 품질과 이들의 구성 형태 및 상자의 외형 치수 비율에 따라 결정되므로, 원지의 링크라쉬(ring crush), 원단의 수직압축강도(edgewise compression strength)를 통해 상자의 압출강도를 관리하는 것이 보통이다. 또한 골판지 상자는 제작 후 유통 과정을 거치면서, 여러 요인에 의해 압축강도가 현격하게 저하되는데, 이중 수분 흡습에 의한 강도저하와 장기 누적하중, 진동 및 충격 등의 피로로 인한 강도 저하가 가장 크다. 여러 산업 분야에서 골판지 상자의 견고성 문제는 물품의 내수 및 수출시 제품에 대한 신뢰성 확보와 기업의 이미지 제고와 직결되는 중요한 사항이다. 특히, 세계 각 국의 농산물 시장이 개방됨에 따라 우리나라 농산물의 수출도 확대될 전망이고 또한 마땅한 대체재가 개발되지 않는 한 골판지 상자의 이용은 날로 증가될 것으로 전망된다. 따라서 골판지 상자의 압축강도와 내구성 향상에 대한 다각적인 연구가 절실하다.   • Packaging and distribution status of watermelon Korean markets; Chunanm and Chunbuk, Kyungnam and Kyungbuk from January, 1999 to December, 1999 was surveyed to shipping methods, quality. Distribution and marketing of watermelon was different to the producing area, and quality of it was four grade. In a grade, difference of weight was 86%, and that of soluble solid content was 130%. Packaging status was almost non-pack, in case of packaging, packaging material was corrugated fiberboard and wooden-collar box, and packaging unit was mainly used to 8 to 10kg box, for one head or 4 heads was a few.
