This work aims the search of environmentally friendly pre-treatment technologies to develop chromate replacements for metal finishing industries due to its toxicological properties. Since the corrosion resistance of steel was strongly related to water permeation, galvanized steel sheets were treated with various hydrophobic silane compounds and water-suspended polymer solution. Also, plasma gas discharge was applied to modify the surface of a polymer coated-steel sheet to be hydrophobic. The surface hydrophobicity of materials was introduced by CF$_3$H plasma exposure. The corrosion property before and after the plasma treatment was investigated in a slat spray tester with 3.5 wt.% NaCl at 35$^{\circ}C$. The results showed that both silane/polymer double coatings and plasma treatment of the galvanized steel exhibited significant retardation of corrosion.
Some feasibility studies are conducted to produce an advanced ceramic coating, which reveals superior chemical and mechanical strength, on metal base structure used in chemical plant. This advanced coating on metallic frame can replace ceramic delivery pipe and reaction chamber used in chemical plant, which are operated in hi-temperature and corrosive/erosive environment. An dual spraying is adopted to reduce the residual stress in order to increase the coating thickness and the residual stress is estimated by in-situ manner. Then new methodology is tried to form special coating of yttrium aluminum garnet(YAG), which reveals hi-strength and low-creep rates at hi-temperature, superior anti-corrosion property, hi-stability against Alkali-Vapor corrosion, and so on, on iron base structure. To verify the formation of YAG during thermal spraying, XRD(X ray diffraction) technique was used.
Fatigue life of catenary wires in various environments is reduced when stress is concentrated on some points, which are often found in corroded areas by surrounding pollutants. Therefore, the fatigue test were performed in order to investigate the effect of the surface corrosion on the destructive behavior in service environment and accelerated corrosion environment as well as th examine the corrosive property and mechanism of the catenary wires. In the fatigue test of the messenger stranded wire, the corrosion degraded materials showed 35~50% of fatigue life at a same stress amplitude compared to original material. Because the catenary wires have variable load by the interaction of periodic contacts with pantographs the maximum stresses of trolley wire and messenger wire calculated by simulation at the messenger wire during operation was estimated thought the corrosion behavior interpretation of variable stress and fatigue test.

The compressive residual stress due to shot peening process can increase the intrinsic fatigue strength of surface and therefore would be beneficial in reducing the probability of fatigue damage. However, it was not known that the effect of shot peening on corrosion environment. In this study, the influence of shot peening and corrosion condition on corrosion property was investigated on immersed in 3.5% NaCl, 10% $HNO_3$+3% HF, 6% $FeCl_3$. The immersion test was performed with two kind of specimens. The immersion test periods were carried out on performed 360days. Corrosion potential and weight loss were investigated from experimental results. From these results, the effect of shot peening on the corrosion characteristics was evaluated.

The compressive residual stress, which is induced by shot peening process, has the effect of increasing the intrinsic fatigue strength of surface and therefore would be beneficial in reducing the probability of fatigue damage. However, the effect of shot peening in corrosion environment was not known. In this study, investigated is the effect of shot peening on corrosion fatigue crack growth of SAE 5155 steel immersed in 6% $FeCl_3$ solution and corrosion characteristics with considering fracture mechanics. The results of the experimental study corrosion fatigue characteristics of SAE 5155 are as follows; the fatigue crack growth rate of the shot peening material was lower than that of the non-peening material. And fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot peening material than in non-peening material. This is due to the compressive residual stress of surface increases resistance of corrosion fatigue crack propagation. It is assumed that the shot peening process improve corrosive resistance and mechanical property.
Zirconium based alloys have been extensively used as a cladding material for fuel rods in nuclear reactors, due to their low thermal neutron absorption cross-section, excellent corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties at high temperatures. However, a cladding material for fuel rods in nuclear reactors was contact water during long time at high-temperature, so it is necessary to improve the wear and corrosion resistance of the fuel cladding, At ambient environment, there are few data or paper on the characteristic of corrosion in chloride solution and acidic solution. The specimens used in this work are pure Zr and Zircaloy-4. Zircaloy-4 is a specific zirconium-based alloy containing, on a weight percent basis, 1.4% Sn, 0.2% Fe, 0.1% Cr. Pitting corrosion resistance of two alloys by ASTM G48 is higher than that of electrochemical method. Passive film formed on Zircaloy-4 is mainly composed of $ZrO_2$, metallic Sn, and iron species regardless of formation environments. Also, passive film formed on Zr alloys shows n-type semiconductic property on the base of Mott-Schottky plot.
To investigate the corrosion behavior of tools steel surface in various coating film, the surface of hard coated Ti-Zr-N film on the tool steel by using magnetron-sputtering methods was researched using various experimental methods. STD 61 steels were manufactured by using vacuum furnace and solutionized for 1hr at $1050^{\circ}C$. Steel surface was coated with Ti-Zr-N film at $150^{\circ}C$ and 100W for 1h by using DC-sputtering equipment. Surface characteristics of Ti-Zr-N film coated specimens were investigated by OM, XRD, FE-SEM and nano-scratch tester. And corrosion behaviors of the coated specimen were investigated by polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA). It was found that Ti-Zr-N film coated sample had a thick coated layer and showed a good wear resistance and corrosion resistance of surface compared with ZrN and TiN coated sample. The corrosion resistance and mechanical property of Ti-Zr-N film coated STD 61 alloy increased as sputtering time increased.
Many surface protection methods have been developed to apply for constructional steels used under severe corrosive environment. Thermal spray coating has been known to be an attractive technique due to its relatively high coating speed. Furthermore high corrosion resistance of coated film with thermal spray is required to expand its application. Four types of coated films(DFT:300 um) such as pure zinc, pure aluminum and two Al-Zn alloy (Al:Zn=85:15 and Al:Zn=95:5) onto the carbon steel (SS401) were prepared with arc spray, and the corrosion behavior of their samples were evaluated by electrochemical method in this study. Pure aluminum sample showed high corrosion resistance behavior exposed to sea water solution and pure zinc and alloy (Al:Zn=95:5) samples followed pure aluminum sample. The other alloy(Al:Zn=85:15) so called galvalume coated onto the carbon steel ranks the 4th corrosion resistance in this study. The results of porosity ratio of those samples by observation are well matched with the electrochemical data.
The high alkaline property in the concrete pore solution protects the embedded steel in concrete from corrosion due to aggressive ions attack. However, a continuous supply of those ions, in particular, chlorides altogether with a pH fall in electrochemical reaction on the steel surface eventually depassivate the steel to corrode. To mitigate chloride-induced corrosion in concrete structures, finely grained mineral admixtures, for example, pulverized fuel ash (PFA), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and silica fume (SF) have been often advised to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) partially as binder. A consistent assessment of those partial replacements has been rarely performed with respect to the resistance of each binder to corrosion, although the studies for each binder were extensively looked into in a way of measuring the corrosion rate, influence of microstructure or chemistry of chlorides ions with cement hydrations. The paper studies the behavior of steel corrosion, chloride transport, pore structure and buffering capacity of those cementitious binders. The corrosion rate of steel in mortars of OPC, 30% PFA, 60% GGBS and 10% SF respectively, with chloride in cast ranging from 0.0 to 3.0% by weight of binder was measured at 7, 28 and 150 days to determine the chloride threshold level and the rate of corrosion propagation, using the anodic polarization technique. Mercury intrusion porosimetry was also applied to cement pastes of each binder at 7 and 28 days to ensure the development of pore structure. Finally, the release rate of bound chlorides (i.e. buffering capacity) was measured at 150 days. The chloride threshold level was determined assuming that the corrosion rate is beyond 1-2 mA/$m^3$ at corrosion and the order of the level was OPC > 10% SF > 60% GGBS > 30% PFA. Mercury intrusion porosimetry showed that 10% SF paste produced the most dense pore structure, followed by 60% GGBS, 30% PFA and OPC pastes, respectively. It was found that OPC itself is beneficial in resisting to corrosion initiation, but use of pozzolanic materials as binders shows more resistance to chloride transport into concrete, thus delay the onset of corrosion.
The effect of Cu addition on the corrosion characteristics of Zr alloys that developed for nuclear fuel cladding in KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) was evaluated. The alloys having different element of Nb, Sn, Fe, Cr and Cu were manufactured and the corrosion tests of the alloys were performed in static autoclave at $360^{\circ}C$, distilled water condition. The alloys were also examined for their microstructures using the optical microscope and the TEM equipped with EDS and the oxide property was characterized by using X-ray diffraction. From the result of corrosion test more than 450 days, the corrosion rate of the Zr-based alloys was changed with alloying element such as Nb, Sn, Fe, Cr and especially affected by Cu addition. The corrosion resistance was increased with increasing the Cu content and the tetragonal $ZrO_2$ layer was more stabilized on the Cu-containing alloys.
