  • This study deals with the properties of polymer-modified mortars with a nitrite-type hydrocalumite, which are effectively used as intelligent patch materials for deteriorated reinforced concrete structures. The calumite is a material that can adsorb the chloride ions (Cl-) causing the corrosion of reinforcing bars and liberate the nitrite ions (NO2-) inhibiting the corrosion in reinforced concrete, and can provide a self-corrosion inhibition function to the reinforced concrete. Polymer-modified mortars using hydrocalumite and terpolymer powders are prepared with various calumite contents and polymer-binder ratios, and tested for corrosion inhibition. Subsequently, regardless of the polymer-binder ratio, the replacement of ordinary portland cement with the calumite has a marked effect on the corrosion-inhibiting property of the polymer-modified mortars.

  • The compressive residual stress, which is induced by shot peening process, has the effect of increasing the intrinsic fatigue strength of surface and therefore would be beneficial in reducing the probability of fatigue damage. However, it was not known that the effect of shot peening in corrosion environment. In this study, the effect of shot peening on corrosion fatigue crack growth of sping steel immersed in 6% $FeCl_3$ solution and corrosion characteristics with considering fracture mechanics. The results of the experimental study corrosion fatigue characteristics of spring steel are as follows; the fatigue crack growth rate of the shot peening material was lower than of the un peening material. And fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot peening material than un peening material. This is because the compressive residual stress of surface operate resistance of corrosion fatigue crack propagation. It is assumed that the shot peening process improve corrosive resistance and mechanical property.

  • The bonding of steel bar to concrete is closely related to the roughness and corrosion degree of steel bar surface. The accelerated corrosion of concrete specimens with different reinforcement diameters was carried out in this test. Through the pullout test of the corroded concrete specimens, the relationship between the bond stress and the displacement of the corroded concrete specimens under the corresponding corrosion degree was obtained. The bond stress of reinforced concrete with different size and corrosion degree are compared and analyzed to find out the influence of corrosion on the bonding property of reinforced concrete.

  • Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment was performed on cast Mg-6 wt%Al alloy solution-treated at 693K for 16h and aged at 498K. The surface roughness, thickness, micro-hardness, wear and corrosion properties of coatings on solution-treated and aged Mg-6 wt%Al alloy were investigated. The coatings on aged Mg-6 wt%Al alloy had thinner layer and lower micro-hardness and wear resistance than the solution-treated Mg-6 wt%Al alloy. As the aging time increased, the thickness of coatings decreased while the surface roughness was almost no changed. In addition, the micro-hardness and wear property of coatings decreased with increasing the aging time unlike the uncoated Mg-6 wt%Al alloy showing the peak micro-hardness and the best wear property after aging for 16 h. However, the coatings on Mg-6 wt%Al alloy peak-aged for 16h revealed the best corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl solution, which was explained based on the microstructural characteristics.

  • In order to develop a new corrosion sensor for detecting and monitoring the external and internal corrosion damage of buried pipeline, the electrochemical property of sensors and the correlation of its output to corrosion rate of steel pipe, were evaluated by electrochemical methods in two soils of varying resistivity (5,000 ohm-cm, 10,000 ohm-cm) and synthetic tap water environments. In this paper, two types of galvanic probes were manufactured: copper-pipeline steel (Cu-CS) and stainless steel-pipeline steel (SS-CS). The corrosion behavior in synthetic groundwater and synthetic tap water for the different electrodes was investigated by potentiodynamic test. The comparison of the sensor output and corrosion rates revealed that a linear relationship was found between the probe current and the corrosion rates. In the soil resistivity of $5,000{\Omega}-cm$ and tap water environments, only the Cu-CS probe had a good linear quantitative relationship between the sensor output current and the corrosion rate of pipeline steel. In the case of $10,000{\Omega}-cm$, although the SS-CS probe showed a better linear correlation than that of Cu-CS probe, the Cu-CS probe is more suitable than SS-CS probe due to the high current output.

  • Si incorporated diamond-like carbon (Si-DLC) films ranging from 0 to 2 at.% contents were deposited on STS 316L substrates for orthopedic implants by means of r.f. plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (r.f. PACVD) technique, using mixtures of benzene ($C_6H_6$) and silane ($SiH_4$) as the precursor gases. This study provides the reliable and quantitative data for assessment of the effect of Si incorporation on corrosion property in the simulated body fluid environment through the electrochemical test. It was found that corrosion to resistance of Si-DLC coatings with increasing Si content are improved owing to high $sp^3$ bonding.

  • Effects of copper hydroxide(II) on the curing and the corrosion resistance of electrocoating were investigated by MEK rubbing test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Curing performance of electrocoating was lowered with increasing the content of copper hydroxide(II) as evidenced by the MEK rub performance which decreased with increasing the content of copper hydroxide(II). This indicates copper hydroxide(II) affected the blocked isocyanate reaction in the coatings, by the decomposition of copper hydroxide(II) to CuO and $H_2O$ during reaction of isocyanate with nuclephiles. Corrosion resistance of coatings also decreased with the content of copper hydroxide. This reflects the higher barrier property in coatings with higher curing performance.

  • The stainless steel wire requires good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, such as drawing ability, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. For increasing drawing ability of stainless steel, Ni coating methods have been used in this study. However, there is no information on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of drawed wires after Ni coating. To investigate corrosion resistance and mechanical property of drawed wire, the characteristics of Ni coated wires have been determined by tensile strength tester, hardness tester, field emission scanning microscope, energy dispersive x-ray analysis and potentiodynamic method in 0.1 M HCl. The drawed stainless steel wires showed the strain-induced martensitic structure, whereas non-drawed stainless steel wire showed annealing twin in the matrix of austenitic structure. The hardness and tensile strength of drawed stainless steel wire were higer than that of non-drawed stainless steel wire. Electrochemical measurements showed that, in the case of drawed stainless steel o ire after Ni coating, the corrosion resistance and pitting potential increased compared with non-coated and drawed stainless steel wire due to decrease in the surface roughness.

  • Chloride ion diffusion at the corner of rectangular-shaped concrete structures is presented. At the corner of rectangular-shaped concrete, chloride ion diffusion is in two-dimensional process. Chloride ions accumulate from two orthogonal directions, so that corrosion-free life of concrete structures is significantly reduced. A numerical procedure based on finite element method is used to solve the two-dimensional diffusion process. Orthotropic property of diffusion coefficient of concrete is considered and chloride ion profile obtained from numerical analysis is used to produce transformed diffusion coefficient. Comparisons of experimental data are also carried out to show the reliability of proposed numerical analysis. As a result of two-dimensional chloride diffusion, corrosion-free life of concrete structure for railway is estimated using probability of corrosion initiation. In addition, monographs that produces transformed diffusion coefficient and corrosion-free life of concrete structure are made for maintenance purpose.
