In order to develop a method of corrosion fatigue design and estimate reliability of TMCP steel using as the material of heavy industries and plants, its corrosion susceptibilities, corrosion fatigue strength, and determination of fatigue design criterion considering corrosion degradation were investigated. From the results, the corrosion characteristic of TMCP steel is very susceptible in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. Its susceptibility was linearly increased with the solution temperature increase. The corrosion fatigue strength in $25${\circ}$, 3.5wt.% NaCl solution is very lower than that of in air. And also, it was decreased with the frequency decrease in the same environment. It is expected that the developed corrosion fatigue design method for TMCP steel is useful. However, it is necessary to verify its reliability for actual application.
Fatigue strength of the spot welded lap joint is considerably influenced by corrosive environments. Particularly, the chloride and the sulfide are most injurious to strength of the spot welded lap joint. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate its effect to corrosion fatigue strength for safe life design of spot welded structures. In order to evaluate their corrosion fatigue strength, corrosion fatigue tests on the spot welded lap joints of the uncoated and the coated high strength steel sheets were conducted in air and in 10% NaCl solution. Corrosion fatigue strength of the uncoated specimens were entirely lower than the coated one in NaCl solution, but those of the coated specimens in NaCl solution were lower than in air. And stress distribution in single spon welded lap joint subjected to tension-shear load was investigated by the finite element method. Using these results, we tried to evaluate corrosion fatgue strength of the various spot welded lap joints with maximum stress $\sigma_{max}$ at edge on loading side of the spot welded lap joint. We could find that corrosion fatigue strength could be quantitatively and systematically rearranged by $\sigma_{max}$.
Fatigue strength of hull structural steel plate, extracted from longitudinal bulkhead of a 17-year-old ore/oil carrier for renewal, was investigated in air and in artificial seawater condition. The surface of the plate was covered with corrosion pits and they proved to be crack initiation sites by fractography using SEM. From this research, it was found that the evaluation method for fatigue strength of virgin mild steel plates in air and in artificial seawater can also be applied to the evaluation of the fatigue strength of mild steel plates those were long-term exposed to a corrosive environment and their surfaces had been rusted intensively.
Suspension part should have enough endurance during its lifetime to protect passenger. Therefore, the coil spring is one of the major suspension part of an automobile. Corrosion fatigue strength of the coil spring depends on many factors including mechanical and environmental properties. In this paper, residual stresses by shot peening was analyzed using finite element analysis and evaluated its effect on corrosion fatigue strength.
This study addresses the evaluation of the durability of reinforced concrete marine structures subjected to fatigue loading. The laboratory investigation was carried out on full and half size reinforced concrete specimens with three different water cement ratios (0.3, 0.4, and 0.56), static and fatigue loading conditions, and epoxy-coated and regular black steel reinforcements. The marine tidal zone was simulated by alternate filling and draining of the tank (wet and dry cycled), and a galvanostatic corrosion technique to accelerate corrosion of reinforcement was used. Half-cell potentials and changes of crack width were measured periodically during the exposure and followed by ultimate strength testing. The significant findings include adverse effect of fatigue loading, existence of an explicit size effect, poor performance of epoxy coated steel, and negative effect of increasing water/cement ratio.
The final goal of this study is to develop the core technologies applicable to the design, operation and maintenance of welds in nuclear structures. This study includes predicting microstructure changes and residual stress for welded parts of nuclear power plant components. Furthermore, researches are performed on evaluating fatigue, corrosion, and hydrogen induced cracking and finally constructs systematically integrated evaluation system for structural integrity of nuclear welded structures. In this study, metallurgical and mechanical approaches have been effectively coordinated considering real welding phenomena in the fields of welds properties such as microstructure, composition and residual stress, and in the fields of damage evaluations such as fatigue, corrosion, fatigue crack propagation, and stress corrosion cracking. Evaluation techniques tried in this study can be much economical and effective in that it uses theoretical/semi-empirical but includes many additional parameters that can be introduced in real phenomena such as phase transformation, strength mismatch and residual stress. It is clear that residual stress makes great contribution to fatigue and stress corrosion cracking. Therefore the mitigation techniques have been approached by reducing the residual stress of selected parts resulting in successful conclusions.
Contact wires are made by metallic materials and exposured at atmosphere. We have investigated mechanical properties and the present condition of air pollution as to the messenger wires and ACSR wires of these contact wires. Mechanical properties between new contact wires and used, the used one's tensile strength and elongations was decreased by effect from corrosion. We observed a fatigue properties which was investigated by fatigue test because contact wires were affected with amplitude vibration everytime the train passed through the railways. In the evaluation of fatigue test, it was also shown that fatigue life of the used wires was decreased 50 ∼ 60% compared with that of new ones in average by effect from corrosion.
Since stainless steel plates have good mechanical properties, weldability, appearance and resistance of corrosion, these are traditionally used for vehicles such as the bus and the train. And they are mainly fabricated by spot welding. But fatigue strength of their spot welded joint is considerably influenced by welding conditions as well as geometrical factors. Thus a reasonable and systematic criterion for long life design of spot welded body structure must be established. In this report, strain energy density was analyzed by using 3-dimensional finite element model about the IB-type spot welded lap joint under tension-shear load. Fatigue tests were conducted on them having various thickness, joint angle, lapped length and width. From their results, it was found that fatigue strength of the IB-type spot welded lap joints could be effectively and systematically rearranged by strain energy density at the edge of nugget.
