The Study on the Galvanic Corrosion of Al-alloy for Heat Exchanger (Al합금 열교환기의 전지작용부식에 관한 연구)

  • Generally, material for radiator of automobile is composed of Al-alloy, but part of radiator material is still composed of Cu. Specially, Al-alloy replaces Cu and Cu-alloy as cooling and heating system material for light weight. Therefore, galvanic electronic cell is formed between Al-alloy and Cu for automobile radiator material, and Al-alloy corrosion is accelerated. So, in this study, galvanic corrosion test of Al-alloy coupling with Cu was carried out in distilled water, tap water, polluted environment and non-freezing solution. And thus corrosion potential and galvanic currrent density of Al-alloy coupling with Cu is investigated.

  • The repair welding of small leakage parts on the water pipeline in engine room is often and important factor in standby and emergency condition in a ship. So, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the corrosion characteristics of welding part of leakage water pipe in case of some underwater welding electrodes. The corrosion current density between welding metal and base metal was considerably different according to used underwater welding electrodes. In case of DC welding, its corrosion characteristics was better than that of AC welding.

  • A strong adhesion of a silicon carbide (SiC) coating on a WC-Co substrate was achieved through an ion beam mixing technique and the corrosion resistance of the SiC coated WC-Co was investigated by means of a potentiodynamic electrochemical test. In the case of 1 M NaOH solution, a corrosion current density for a SiC coated WC-Co with a heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ displays about 50 times lower than that for the as-received WC-Co. However, in the case of 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, a corrosion current density for a SiC coated WC-Co displays about 3 times lower than that for as-received WC-Co. We discussed the physical reasons for the changes of the corrosion current densities at the different electrolytes.

  • In this study, applicable possibility in chemical decontamination for reactor coolant pump(RCP) was investigated for the various stainless steels. The stainless steel(STS) 304 showed the best electrochemical properties for corrosion current density and the lowest weight loss ratio in chemical decontamination process model 3-3 than other materials. The weightloss quantity in chemical decontamination process model 3-3 presents the lowest value compare to the other chemical decontamination process model 1, 2, 3-1 and 3-2. In the case of SEM observation, the pitting corrosion was generated in both STS 415 and STS 431 with the increasing numbers of cycle. The intergranular corrosion in STS 431 was sporadically observed. The sizes of their pitting corrosion were also increased with increasing cycle numbers.

  • Al ion plating was carried to improve corrosion resistance of Nd-based permanent magnet made by prwder molding method. The effects of applied votage, pressyre and temperature were investigated to find the reation between coating parameters and their properties. Density of coating layer increased with voltage and thus corrosion resistance improved. However when voltage was applied more than 1000V, corrosion resistance whet down because of resputtering effect. Good corrosion resistance was acquired when gas pressure was $5.0\times10^-2$>torr, which is satisfied momentum energy of Ar, Al ions as well as quantity of plasma. The layer coated in low temperature range have better surface density and corrosion resistance than in high temperature. This result is seemed due to the characteristics of substrate itself. All coating layers were showed stong adhesion with substrate.

  • In chromium electrodeposition, crack is inevitably accompanied by chromium layer. Behavior of crack formation and crack density were different from the plating conditions such as current density, temperature, waveform of applied current and so on. And cracks have an influence on the corrosion resistance of chromium deposit, because corrosion occurs through the network of cracks between deposit and substrate. Therefore, many researches have been achieved in order to remove the cracks in chromium deposit. Formation of double layers, Cr/Cr and Ni/Cr were investigated to increase corrosion resistance of chromium deposit in this study. As pretreatment prior to outer chromium coating, acid pickling and current control method were examined. Cracks in cross-section of each sample were observed with SEM and CASS(Copper modified acetic acid salt spray) test was performed to evaluate corrosion resistance. It was found that corrosion resistance of Cr/Cr and Ni/Cr double layers were superior to Cr or Ni single layer from the results of CASS test.

  • Many protection methods such as surface coating, electric protection, or other methods have been applied to the numerous steel structures widely used in continental and marine areas to control their corrosion, which is done from an economic point of view. Most of these steel structures are primarily protected by coating methods. However, some steel piles under seawater are protected by the electric protection method, that is, either using an impressed current or a sacrificial anode method. Furthermore, environmental contamination may cause a severely corrosive environment, which, in turn, causes the accelerated corrosion of steel structures. Subsequently, coated steel structures could deteriorate more rapidly than the designed lifetime because of the acid rain caused by air pollution, etc. Therefore, a coating of marine paint exposed to seawater, that is, underwater hardening painting, is increasingly required to be fast drying as well as highly corrosion resistant. In this study, five types of underwater hardening paints were prepared with different resin series and additives. Their corrosion and water resistances were investigated using electrochemical methods such as corrosion potential, polarization curves, impedance and cyclic voltammogram measurements, etc. Even though it is generally accepted that the corrosion resistance of bare steel tends to increase with a shift of the corrosion potential in the noble direction, the corrosion resistance of a sample with a coating exhibited a relatively better tendency when it had a lower corrosion potential in this study. The corrosion current density was also decreased with a decrease in the diffusion limiting current density, which may mean that there is some relationship between corrosion and water resistance. The S sample of the ceramic resin series showed the relatively best corrosion and water resistance among those of samples, while the worst corrosion and water resistance were observed for the R sample of the epoxy resin series. The corrosion and water resistance of those samples tended to deteriorate with an increase in the immersion days, and their corrosion and water resistances were considered to be apparently improved by the types of resin and additives.

  • An alternating current (AC) corrosion using coupon and electric resistance (ER) probe has been studied. Coupon coupled with ER probe were applied in terms of AC voltage from high value to low value through the survey of AC voltages on buried gas transmission pipeline over the country. Parameters such as AC current density of coupon, AC voltage, cathodic protection potential, soil resistivity and frequency were monitored continually. Corrosion induced by AC was observed even under cathodically protected condition that met cathodic protection criterion (below -850mv vs. CSE). Corrosion rate was affected mainly not by AC voltage but by both of frequency and AC current density. An experimental corrosion rate relationship could be obtained statistically, In which AC corrosion rate increased linearly with effective AC current density and its slope was 0.619 in case of coupon and 0.885 in case of ER probe.

A Study on the Welds Characteristics of 200 Grade Stainless Steel for Application of Street Pole Material (가로등주 소재 적용을 위한 200계 스테인리스강의 용접부 특성 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the welds characteristics of the 205 stainless steel pipe for application of street pole material. The welds corrosion behavior of STS 205 pipe in 0.1 N sulphuric acid solution and 5% NaCl solution at room temperature was studied using both salt spray test and potentiodynamic polarization experiment. The morphology and components of corrosion products on surface of STS 205 pipe welds were investigated using SEM/EDX. The tensile strength and yield strength values of STS 205 plate were 715 MPa and 369 MPa respectively. The microvickers hardness values of STS 205 pipe welds were slightly increased than that of STS 304 pipe welds. Corrosion current density($I_{corr.}$) and critical current density($I_{crit.}$) values of STS 205 pipe welds in 3.5% NaCl solution were $1.89{\times}10^{-6}$ $A/cm^2$ and $15.8{\times}10 ^{-6}$ $A/cm^2$. The corrosion resistance of SIS 205 pipe welds was similar to its STS 304 pipe welds. The STS 205 and 304 pipe welds passive films were chromium oxide. Especially, the STS 205 pipe welds showed good corrosion resistance in 0.1 N sulphuric acid. This is attributed to the forming of protective chromium oxide on the surface of STS 205 pipe welds.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the casting problem and corrosion behavior in two types of HL Hexed abutments of the Steri-Oss system ; gold/plastic coping and gold coping. The anodic Polarization behavior, the galvanic corrosion between abutments and Type III gold alloys, before and after casting were analyzed, and the crevice corrosion of casting samples was analyzed with the CPPT test and the SEM. The results are as follows : 1. Anodic polarization behavior of samples ; Before casting, gold/plastic coping and gold coping was shown to have a similar corrosion pat-terns. Type III casting gold alloy was shown to have a lower corrosion potential and passivation film. Corrosion potential of the case of gold/plastic coping after casting was higher than that of gold coping, but the region of passivation film for gold/plastic coping was smaller than that of gold coping. 2. Galvanic corrosion behavior of samples ; Contact current density between casting gold alloys and gold/plastic before casting was higher than that between gold coping and casting gold alloy Galvanic corrosion of samples after casting was shown to have similar contact current density 3. Crevice corrosion behavior of samples ; Crevice corrosion resistance of casting sample using gold coping was lower than that of cast-ing sample using gold/plastic coping, and a severe corrosion pattern was observed at the abutment-casting gold alloy interface by the SEM.
