  • Theoretical predictions for thermodynamically stable phases which formed when alkali(sodium and potassium) vapors reacted with alumina-chromia refractories under coal gasifying atmosphere were confirmed experimentally using a laboratory-scale coal gasifying reaction system and a commercial alumina-chromia refractory using SEM, XRD, and EDAX. Alkali concentration profiles in the refractory as a function of time were also determined. The results showed that the compounds that formed were $X_2O{\cdot}Al_2O_3, X_2O{\cdot}Cr_2O_3, X_2O{\cdot}5Al_2O_3, X_2O{\cdot}7Al_2O_3, X_2O{\cdot}11Al_2O_3(X=Na^+ \;or\; K^+)$, depending upon the alkali concentration and time of exposure at high temperatures. The presence of sulfur in gasifying atmospheres did not appear to affect the alkali reaction produces. Alkali pentration into the alumina-chromia refractory was deep and the formation of the $Na_2O{\cdot}Al_2O_3/K_2O{\cdot}Al_2O_3$ compunds resulted in the serious deformation of the refractory due to the large volume expansion at the reaction surface. The hot face of the alumina-chromia refractory in service under an alkali environment is prone to failure by alkali attack.

  • The auto industry is demanding more ductile high-strength steel grades to build lighter and stronger car bodies. The hot-dip galvanizing problems of these new steel grades are creating a demand for an improved method to control zinc wettability. The simplest way to improve zinc wettability on industrial hot-dip galvanizing lines is to increase the strip immersion temperature at zinc bath entry for enhancing the aluminothermic reaction. However, this practice increases the reactivity due to overheating the zinc in the snout which induces the formation of brittle Fe-Zn compounds at the strip/coating interface with the formation of higher amounts of dross in the zinc bath and snout contamination. Thus, this simple practice can only be utilized for short production periods of one to two hours without deteriorating coating quality. This problem has been solved by employing a technique that allows the use of a higher and attuned strip immersion temperature at zinc bath entry while still maintaining a constantly low zinc bath temperature. This has been proven to provide the solution for both the improved wettability and a significant reduction in the amounts of dross in the zinc bath.

  • Particles or deposit formed by corrosion of the pipe material bring about bad influences on the heating systems with inconvenience, energy loss and so on. In order to obtain the non-corrosive environments, the circulation hot water should properly be treated in several ways to satisfy one or more conditions of the followings: suitable pH-level, low hardness, low oxygen content, low conductivity, low level of chlorides and sulphur compounds and low level of solid particles. This experimental study was carried out to develope the new guidelines on the optimal water quality and directions for water quality management in heating systems. As results, it was recommended that the heating water be maintained pH-level not less than 8, hardness contents as $CaCO_3$ no more than 50 mg/L, turbidity no more than 10 NTU and T-Fe contents 1 mg/L below.

  • The amount of natural gas that is used on a worldwide scale is continuously going up. Natural gas and acidic components, such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, cause significant corrosion damage to transmission lines and equipment in various quantities. One of the fundamental processes in natural gas processing is the separation of acid gases, among which the safety and environmental needs due to the high toxicity of hydrogen sulfide and also to prevent wear and corrosion of pipelines and gas transmission and distribution equipment, the necessity of sulfide separation Hydrogen is more essential than carbon dioxide and other compounds. Given this problem's significance, this endeavor aims to extend the lifespan of the transmission lines' pipes for gas and oil. Zinc oxide nanoparticles made from the environmentally friendly source of Allium scabriscapum have been employed to accomplish this crucial purpose. This is a simple, safe and cheap synthesis method compared to other methods, especially chemical methods. The formation of zinc oxide nanoparticles was shown by forming an absorption peak at a wavelength of about 355 nm using a spectrophotometric device and an X-ray diffraction pattern. The size and morphology of synthesized nanoparticles were determined by scanning and transmission electron microscope, and the range of size changes of nanoparticles was determined by dynamic light scattering device.

  • Recently European Council(EU) published the RoHS(restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) which is prohibit the use of Pb, Hg, Cd, $Cr^{+6}$, PBB or PBDE in the electrical and electronic equipments. So EU member States shall ensure that, from 1 July 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain 6 hazardous substances. The one of the most important in electronics manufacturing process is soldering. Soldering process use the chemical substances which are applied in fluxing and cleaning processes and it can generate the malfunction of electronics caused by corrosion in the fields conditions. Therefore this study researched on the polarization and Tafel properties of Sn40Pb and Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu(SAC) solder based on the electrochemical theory. We prepared SnPb specimens which was aged in $150^{\circ}C,\;180^{\circ}C$ for 15 minutes ana Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu specimens that was aged in $180^{\circ}C,\;220^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes. Experimental polarization curves were measured in distilled ionized water and $3.5 wt\%$, 1 mole NaCl electrolyte of $40^{\circ}C$, pH 7.5. Ag/AgCl and graphite were utilized by reference and counter electrode, respectively. To observe the electrochemical reaction, polarization test was conducted from -250 mV to +250 mV. From the polarization curves that were composed of anodic and cathodic curves, we obtained Tafel slop, reversible electrode potential(Ecorr) and exchange current density(Icorr). In these results, corrosion rate for two specimen were compared Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu with SnPb solders

  • For dolomite clinkers used as stamp materials, the corrostion behavior of those by slag was inverstigated between 1550$^{\circ}C$ and 1650$^{\circ}C$. Fe2O3 among slag components was selectively penetrated into the grain boundaries of dolomite clinkers. In hot face, the magnesioferrite was preferentially formed by Fe2O3 component contained in dolomite clinker rather than Fe2O3 of slag. The corrosion steps of dolomite clinkers by slag were found as follows ; (1) The dicalciumferrite was formed by the reaction of the calcia within dolomite clinkers with Fe2O3 of slag. (2) The magnesia within dolomite clinkers reacted with the dicalciumferrite to from magnesioferrite and the residual calcia within dolomite clinkers reacted with the dicalciumferrite to form magnesioferrite and the residual calcia was dissolved into slag. (3) The magnesioferrite was corroded by CaO-SiO2 compounds of slag. With the temperature of slag increased, the magnesioferrite layer in hot face was decreased for dolomite clinker without Fe2O3 while the layer thickness and grain sizes of magnesioferrite was increased for dolomite clinker with Fe2O3.

  • Particulates in drinking water distribution system (DWDS) are mostly influenced by internal corrosion of metal pipes and sediment in pipelines due to the solution of this effect is limited. The particle size, component and properties of compounds for particulates in distributed water are different and the difference of these characteristics will be occurred by the kind of facilities, pipe condition, external factors and supply system etc. In this study, conducting the investigation of water quality in DWDS researches with particulates in the water. Monitoring sites were each water supply reservoir and the end of water supply area in DWDS. To collect particulate material at each sampling site, $47{\phi}$ glass microfiber filter type GF/C was performed using a filtration. Substances that the effect of the turbidity in the water according to particulate suspended solids and inorganic materials is due to the increasing particulates in the end of DWDS were increased. The result of compounds analysis by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) were Goethite (${\alpha}$-FeOOH), Magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) in the end of DWDS and Quartz ($SiO_2$), Yeelimite ($Ca_4Al_6O_{12}SO_4$) at the effluent of waterworks and reservoirs. There were differences the compounds and sediments in the releasing or remaining water distribution facilities.

  • The sorption of selenium ions onto iron and iron compounds as a disposal container material and its corrosion products, and onto bentonite as a buffer material, was studied to understand the behaviors of selenium in a waste repository. Selenite was sorbed onto commercial magnetite very well in solutions at around pH 9, but silicate hindered their sorption onto both magnetite and ferrite. Unlike commercial magnetite and ferrite, flesh synthesized magnetite, green rust and iron greatly decreased selenium concentration even in a silicate solution. These results might be due to the formation of precipitates, or the sorption of selenide or selenite onto an iron surface at below Eh= -0.2 V. Red-colored Se(cr) was observed on the surface of a reaction bottle containing iron powder added into a selenite solution. Silicate influences on the sorption onto magnetite and iron for selenide are the same as those for selenite. Even though bentonite adsorbed a slight amount of selenite, the sorption cannot be ignored in the waste repository since a very large quantity of bentonite is used.

  • The industrial systems contain many sites and components susceptible to biofilms formation. Biofilms play an important role in microbial growth and industrial fouling. Thus, the control of the biofilms in industrial systems has been emphasized, however, the efficient controlling method was not provided yet. Since silver compounds have no residual and corrosion problem, the interest for silver compounds as a biofilm control disinfectant has been increased. In this study, we attempted to examine the disinfection ability of silver compounds. The disinfection efficiency of two silver compounds(silver ion and silver oxide) were evaluated for biofilms in comparison with suspended cells using well known indicator microorganisms(E. coli, P. aeruginosa) and compared with that of chlorine. Silver compounds were found to be effective in inactivating E. coli and P. aeruginosa biofilms. The reason for superiority of silver compounds as biofilm disinfectant was suggested by that silver can penetrate into the inner biofilm matrix faster than chlorine without consumption. This study reports that the disinfectant which is highly effective in inactivating the suspended cells in water becomes the less effective for controlling biofilm because of its high reactivity. This results imply that the effective strategy for biofilm control can be achieved by considering thoroughly the chemical nature of disinfects and biofilm structure and the reactivity between them.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate mechanical properties of the jointed Al6061/HT590 alloys by friction stir welding (FSW). FSW was conducted under the conditions with tool rotating speed of 500 RPM and traveling speed of 300 mm/min., where Ar gas was introduced to prevent the materials from corrosion during the welding process. Electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) was used to characterize microstructures such as grain size, misorientation angle and crystal orientation. Evolution of intermetallic compounds in Al6061 during the process were examined in terms of morphology, size and aspect ratio at three distinct zones Al base material, heat affected zone and stir zone, where transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used. It was revealed that FSW gave rise to refinement of grains as well as growth of intermetallic compounds in Al6061. The morphological changes of intermetallic compounds exerted an influence on mechanical properties, resulting in occurrence of fracture in the part of the base material instead of the jointed parts (heat affected zone and stir zone). This study systematically evaluated the microstructural evolutions during the FSW for joining Al6061 with HT590 and their effect on mechanical properties.
