  • The corrosion environments in a steel structure are significantly different depending on the individual parts of the members. To ensure the safety of weathering steel structures, it is important to evaluate the time-dependent corrosion behavior. Thus, the progress and effect of corrosion damage on weathering steel members should be evaluated; however, the predicted corrosion depth, which is affected by the corrosion environment, has not been sufficiently considered until now. In this study, the time-dependent thicknesses of the corrosion product layer were examined to quantifiably investigate and determine the corrosion depth of the corroded surface according to the exposure periods and corrosion environments. Thus, their atmospheric exposure tests were carried out for 4 years under different corrosion environments. The relationship between the thickness of the corrosion product layers and mean corrosion depth was examined based on the corrosion environment. Thus, the micro corrosion environments on the skyward and groundward surfaces of the specimens were monitored using atmospheric corrosion monitor sensors. In addition, the evaluated mean corrosion depth was calculated based on the thickness of the corrosion product layer in an atmospheric corrosion environment, and was verified through a comparison with the measured mean corrosion depth.

  • This paper reports the studies on the wear-corrosion behavior of ductile cast iron in the acidic environment. In atmosphere and variety of pH solution, specific wear rate and wear-corrosion characteristics of GCD 60 with various sliding speed and distance were investigated. And electrochemical polarization test of GCD 60 was examined in the environment of various pH values. The main results are as following : As the contact pressure increases, the critical velocity of specific wear rate becomes transient at low sliding speed. As pH value becomes low, wear-corrosion loss increases in the aqueous solution. As the corrosion environment is acidified, corrosion potential of GCD 60 becomes noble and corrosion current density increases.

  • Corrosion behavior of welded SWS400 steel used for bridges was studied in a range of the acid-rain environment using immersion, potentiodynamic polartization, polarization resistance, and galvanic corrosion tests. The SWS400 steel exhibited active corrosion behavior in the range of acid-rain environment, i.e. no passivation. As the results of immersion corrosion test, Tafel extrapolation method, and polarization resistance measurement, the average corrosion rats of the steels were 0.31-0.72 mm/year in the pH of 4-5, and 0.17 mm/yera in the pH 6, respectively. The steel showed a resistance to corrosion in the pH 6. The observed active behavior of SWS400 steel in chloride-containing environment indicated that the chloride ions exerts a detrimental influence on the formation of passive films. Galvanic corrosion was observed between the weld and the base metals because the weld is anodic to the base metal.

  • Effects of high-temperature environment and low-temperature environment on corrosion behaviours of 18Cr stainless steels (type 304L, type 441) in simulated selective catalytic reduction (SCR) environments were studied using weight loss test in each environment and rust analysis. With time to exposure to the high-temperature environment, type 441 was more resistant to corrosion than type 304L due to both higher diffusivity of Cr and lower thermal expansion coefficient in α-iron. The former provides a stable protective Cr2O3 layer. The latter leaded to low residual stress between scale and steel, reducing the spallation of the scale. With time to exposure to the low-temperature environment, on the other hand, type 304L was more resistant to corrosion than type 441. The lower resistance of type 441 was caused by Cr-depleted zone with less than 11% formed during the pre-exposure to a high-temperature environment, unlike type 304L. It was confirmed by results from the crevice corrosion test of sensitised 11Cr steel. Hence, to achieve higher corrosion resistance in simulated SCR environments, ferritic stainless steels having lower thermal expansion coefficient and higher diffusivity of Cr but containing more than 18% Cr are recommended.

  • Due to increase of air pollution substance, such as $SO_2$,$SO_3$, H2S ,CO, HCI, $Cl_2$ and so on, the operating environment of mechanical equipment and facilities like generating plants, ships, metal structure etc., are acidified and corroded. In these environments, the crevice corrosion of marine facilities frequently occurs at crevice like jointed bolt, gasket or sealant, riveted plates, contact of metal with non-metallic solids etc. Therefore, this paper was studied on the crevice corrosion behavior of mild steel(SS 400) in marine environment. In a variety of NaCl solutions, the aspect of he .crevice corrosion and polarization behavior under the crevice corrosion was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) Under crevice corrosion, the open circuit potential become less treble as the concentration of NaCl solution increased. 2) The corrosion current density of mild steel was high drained as the concentration of NaCl solution increased by 3.5%, but in the concentration increased over 3.5%, the corrosion current density was low drained. 3) The crevice corrosion is more sensitive to the synergy effect of dissolved oxygen and NaCl.

  • Thermal sprayed Cu-Ni alloy coating on the carbon steel was carried out impingement erosion-corrosion test and electrochemical corrosion test in the marine environment. The impingement erosion-corrosion behavior and electrochemical corrosion characteristics of substrate(SS400) and thermal sprayed Cu-Ni coating was investigated, and the corrosion control efficiency of Cu-Ni coating to substrate was estimated quantitatively. Main results obtained are as follows : 1) The weight loss rate of Cu-Ni coating layer by the impingement erosion-corrosion compared with substrate was smaller in high specific resistance solution than in low specific resistance solution. 2) The corrosion potential of Cu-Ni coating layer spray coating in the marine environment became more noble than that of substrate. 3) With the lapse of time, corrosion current density of Cu-Ni coating layer became stable, but that of substrate was increased. 4) As the corrosion control efficiency of Cu-Ni coating layer in the marine environment was over 90%, its anti-corrosion characteristics was excellent.

  • In this paper, a newest kind of anti-atmospheric corrosion method is introduced. This method does not adopt organic coating, plastic layer or metal plating, instead it adopts a kind of aqueous emulsion containing numerous tine solid compounds that are absorbed onto the component surface, which play the role of anti-electrochemical corrosion.

  • Atmospheric corrosion is generally an electrochemical degradation process of metal. It can be caused by various corrosion factors of atmospheric component, weather, and air pollutants. Moisture, particles of sea salts, and sulfur dioxide are major factors in atmospheric corrosion. Galvanizing coating is one of the most efficient ways to protect iron from corrosion by zinc plating on the surface of the iron. Galvanized steels are being widely used in automobiles, building structures, roofing, and other industrial structures due to their high corrosion resistance compared to bare iron. Atmospheric corrosion of galvanized steel has shown complex corrosion behavior depending on coating process, coating thickness, atmospheric environment, and air pollutants. In addition, different types and kinds of corrosion products can be produced depending on the environment. Lifespan of galvanized steels is also affected by the environment. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the corrosion behavior of galvanized steel under atmospheric corrosion at six locations in Korea. When the exposure time was increased, content of zinc from GA surface decreased while contents of iron and oxygen tended to increase. On the other hand, content of iron was constant even after 36 months of exposure of GI.
