Settlement of foundations in permafrost regions primarily results from three physical and mechanical processes such as thaw consolidation of permafrost layer, creep of warm frozen soils and the additional deformation of seasonal active layer induced by freeze-thaw cycling. This paper firstly establishes theoretical models for the three sources of settlement including a statistical damage model for soils which experience cyclic freeze-thaw, a large strain thaw consolidation theory incorporating a modified Richards' equation and a Drucker-Prager yield criterion, as well as a simple rheological element based creep model for frozen soils. A novel numerical method was proposed for live computation of thaw consolidation, creep and freeze-thaw cycling in corresponding domains which vary with heat budget in frozen ground. It was then numerically implemented in the FISH language on the FLAC platform and verified by freeze-thaw tests on sandy clay. Results indicate that the calculated results agree well with the measured data. Finally a model test carried out on a half embankment in laboratory was modeled.
In this paper, an algorithm based on a model analysis of the online calculation of the root-mean-square (RMS) value of welding current for single-phase AC resistance spot welding (RSW) was developed. The current is highly nonlinear and typically non-sinusoidal, which makes the measuring and controlling actions difficult. Though some previous methods focused on this issue, they were so complex that they could not be effectively used in general cases. The electrical model of a single-phase AC RSW was analyzed, and then an algorithm for online calculation of the RMS value of the welding current was presented. The description includes two parts, a model-dependent part and a model-independent part. Using a previous work about online measurement of the power factor angle, the first part can be solved. For the second part, although the solution of the governing equation can be directly obtained, a lot of CPU time must be consumed due to the fact that it involves a lot of complex calculations. Therefore, a neural network was employed to simplify the calculations. Finally, experimental results and a corresponding analysis showed that the proposed algorithm can obtain the RMS values with a high precision while consuming less time when compared to directly solving the equations.

This study formulates a new geometric parameterization scheme to effectively address numerical analysis subject to the variation of the fiber radius of a square unit cell. In particular, the proposed mesh-morphing approach may lead to a parameterized weak form whose bilinear and linear forms are affine in the geometric parameter of interest, i.e. the fiber radius. As a result, we may certify the reduced basis analysis of a square unit cell model for any parameters in a predetermined parameter domain with a rigorous a posteriori error bound. To demonstrate the utility of the proposed geometric parameterization, we consider a two-dimensional, steady-state heat conduction analysis dependent on two parameters: a fiber radius and a thermal conductivity. For rapid yet rigorous a posteriori error evaluation, we estimate a lower bound of a coercivity constant via the min-θ method as well as the successive constraint method. Compared to the corresponding finite element analysis, the constructed reduced basis analysis may yield nearly the same solution at a computational speed about 29 times faster on average. In conclusion, the proposed geometric parameterization scheme is conducive for accurate yet efficient reduced basis analysis.
Kinetic studies have been performed for alkaline hydrolysis of a series of [(methoxy)(p-substituted styryl)carbene]pentacarbonyl chromium(0) complexes ($(CO)_5$Cr=$C(OCH_3)CH=CHC_6H_4X$, X = p-$OCH_3$, p-$CH_3$, H, p-Cl, p-$NO_2$). Second-order rate constants $(k_{{OH}^-})$ for the alkaline hydrolysis in 50% acetonitrile-water(v/v) were determined spectrophotometrically at various temperatures. At a low pH region (pH < 7.5), the observed rate constant $(k_{obs})$ remained constant with a small value, while in a high pH region (pH > 9.5), $k_{obs}$ increases linearly with increasing the pH of the medium. The second-order rate constants $(k_{{OH}^-})$ increase as the substituent X changes from a strong electron donating group to a strong electron withdrawing group. The Hammett plot obtained for the alkaline hydrolysis is consisted of two intersecting straight lines. The nonlinear Hammett plot might be interpreted as a change in the rate-determining step. However, the fact that the corresponding Yukawa-Tsuno plot is linear with $\rho$ and r values of 0.71 and 1.14, respectively indicates that the nonlinear Hammett plot is not due to a change in the rate-determing step but is due to ground-state stabilization through resonance interaction. The positive $\rho$ value suggests that nucleophilic attack by $OH^-$ to form a tetrahedral addition intermediate is the rate-determining step. The large negative ${\Delta}S^\neq$ value determined in the present system is consistent with the proposed mechanism.

A numerical simulation of the nonsteady state rolling process in the plane strain condition is presented in the basis of the rigid-plastic finite element method by considering large deformation. In order to apply the large deformation theory to the numerical method for sheet rolling problems, constitutive equation relating 2nd-Piola Kirchhoff stress and Lagrangian strain which reflect geometrical nonlinearity is used. To confirm the validity of the developed algorithm, the analysis of the neutral flow region, roll separating force, torque, pressure and stress/strain distributions on the workpiece is conducted from the bite of the material until the steady state is reached. The computed results of the roll force and torque in the present finite element analysis are lower than those corresponding to small strain theory. The pressure distribution at the work piece-roll interface is found to show the typical 'friction hill' type only. The peak value in near the neutral region, however, is good agrements with the existing results. the neutral region, however, is good agrements with the existing results. The frictional force at the roll interface provide detailed information about the neutral point where the shear forces change direction. In addition, the analysis also includes the effect and influence of material condition, strip thickness, work roll diameter, as well as roll speed and lubricant on each deformation process.

Recent changes in the construction method of piles to minimize noise, along with the development of high-strength reinforcement, have provided an economical high performance RC pile development to compensate for the disadvantages of existing PHC piles. In this study, a methodology for the development of cross - section details of high performance RC piles of various performances is presented by freely applying high strength steel and concrete. This study suggested a technique for calculating bending moments for a given axial force corresponding to the allowable crack widths and this can be used for serviceablity check. In calculating the design shear force, the existing design equation applicable to the rectangular or the I section was modified to be applicable to the hollow circular section. In particular, in the limit state design method, the shear force is calculated in proportion to the axial force, and the procedure for calculating PV diagram is established. Last, the section details are determined through PM diagrams that they have the similar flexural and axial-flexural performances of the PHC pile A, B and C types with a diameter of 500 mm. To facilitate the application of the selected standard sections to the practical tasks, the design PM diagram and design shear forces are proposed in accordance with the strength design method and limit state design method.
In this work dynamic heat transfer in a CPFS (cable penetration fire stop) system built in the firewall of nuclear power plants is three-dimensionally investigated to develop a test-simulator that can be used to verify effectiveness of the sealant. Dynamic heat transfer in the fire stop system is formulated in a parabolic PDE (partial differential equation) subjected to a set of initial and boundary conditions. First, the PDE model is divided into two parts; one corresponding to heat transfer in the axial direction and the other corresponding to heat transfer on the vertical planes. The first PDE is converted to a series of ODEs (ordinary differential equations) at finite discrete axial points for applying the numerical method of SOR (successive over-relaxation) to the problem. The ODEs are solved by using an ODE solver In such manner, the axial heat flux can be calculated at least at the finite discrete points. After that, all the planes are separated into finite elements, where the time and spatial functions are assumed to be of orthogonal collocation state at each element. The initial condition of each finite element can be obtained from the above solution. The heat fluxes on the vertical planes are calculated by the Galerkin FEM (finite element method). The CPFS system was modeled, simulated, and analyzed here. The simulation results were illustrated in three-dimensional graphics. Through simulation, it was shown clearly that the temperature distribution was influenced very much by the number, position, and temperature of the cable stream, and that dynamic heat transfer through the cable stream was one of the most dominant factors, and that the feature of heat conduction could be understood as an unsteady-state process.
We have studied the vortex dynamics in YBa$_2Cu_3O_7$ single crystals with columnar defects using micro Hall-probe array. The Hall-probe array technique allowed a simultaneous measurement of the time and spatial dependence of the vortex density so that more detailed information on flux dynamics could be obtained. We found that field profiles inside sample were similar to the Bean's critical state model from the magnetic hysteresis measurement. Normalized relaxation rates were maximum near the center and decreased toward the edge if applied field H$_{app}$ is greater than the penetration field H. But applied magnetic field H$_{app}$ is less than H, relaxation rates were minimum near the center and increased toward edge. We found that glassy exponent ${\mu}$ has the value of ${\sim}$ 1 whose corresponding vortex motion is half-loop excitation. However, single vortex creep, ${\mu}$${\sim}$ 1/7, was also found at 30 K and H$_{app}$${\cong}$ H'. Calculation of activation energy, U, was possible from direct analysis of the local relaxation data using the basic diffusion equation. From these results, we found that U increases logarithmically with time and U around center was lower than that at the edge.
Microturbomachinery (< 250 kW) using gas foil bearings can function without oil lubricants, simplify rotor-bearing systems, and demonstrate excellent rotordynamic stability at high speeds. State-of-the-art technologies generally use bump foil bearings or leaf foil bearings due to the specific advantages of each of the two types. Although these two types of bearings have been studied extensively, there are very few studies on leaf-bump foil bearings, which are a combination of the two aforementioned bearings. In this work, we illustrate a simple mathematical model of the leaf-bump foil bearing with leaf foils supported on bumps, and predict its static and dynamic performances. The analysis uses the simple elastic model for bumps that was previously developed and verified using experimental data, adds a leaf foil model, and solves the Reynolds equation for isothermal, isoviscous, and ideal gas fluid flow. The model predicts that the drag torques of the leaf-bump foil bearings are not affected significantly by static load and bearing clearance. Due to the preload effect of the leaf foils, rotor spinning, even under null static load, generates significant hydrodynamic pressure with its peak near the trailing edge of each leaf foil. A parametric study reveals that, while the journal eccentricity and minimum film thickness decrease, the drag torque, direct stiffness, and direct damping increase with increasing bump stiffness. The journal attitude angle and cross-coupled stiffness remain nearly constant with increasing bump stiffness. Interestingly, they are significantly smaller compared to the corresponding values obtained for bump foil bearings, thus, implying favorable rotor stability performance.
Exsolution intergrowth of ilmenite and hematite was studied by the Rietveld refinement method. According to the analysis on these two structural analog minerals, it was found that octahedron (M2) of Ti in ilmenite is in the least deformation, then that (M1) of Fe in ilmenite is deformed next, and octaheron deformation of Fe in hematite is between M1 and M2. High pressure compression experiment was performed up to 5.8 GPa, where two minerals' XRD peaks merged completely. Ilmenite shows normal compression behavior, whereas hematite shrinks in very small amount. This kind of abnormal behavior might be due to the differential response to the applied pressure corresponding to the different compressibilities of the minerals each other.
