Mechanical Characteristics and Preferences of Gamkugsulgie-dduk by Different Addition of Chrysanthemum indicum L. (감국의 첨가에 따른 감국 설기떡의 품질 특성과 기호도)

  • The quality of physical characteristics were measured, using sensory evaluation and mechanical characteristics where different percentages of chrysanthemums (0%, chrysanthemum indicum power: 1%, 3% and 5%, and Chrysanthemum indicum petals: 1%, 3% and 5%) were added to rice flour, to promote the use of and liking forrice cakes that are a kind of Korean traditional foods. In the sensory evaluation, the color appeared to be the highest when 3% of Chrysanthemum indicum petals was added, and there was a significant difference between the samples used(p<.01). It was also shown that the taste was generally higher in steamed, Gamkugsulgie-dduk added Chrysanthemum indicum than those in which no Chrysanthemum indicum were added, and that it appeared to be the highest, particularly, in rice cakes that 3% of Chrysanthemum indicum petals. However there was no significant difference between the samples. The Chewiness was the highest in rice cakes to Which 3% of Chrysanthemum indicum petals was added but there was no significant difference between the samples. The after-swallow feeling and overall quality were the highest in rice cakes to which 3% of Chrysanthemum indicum petals(p<.01), and there was a significant difference between the samples(p<.01). In terms of change in color, the value of lightness was the highest in rice cakes to which no Chrysanthemum were added. The more the content of Chrysanthemums, the lower the value of lightness but the higher the values of red color(a) and yellow color(b). In the measurement of the texture, using a mechanical characteristics, the springiness was the highest in rice cakes to which 5% of Chrysanthemum indicum powder was added, and the gumminess, hardness and chewiness appeared to be high in rice cakes to which 5% of Chrysanthemum indicum petals was added. In the correlation between the sensory evaluation and mechanical characteristics, the higher the softness, the lower the value of lightness. The softness in the sensory evaluation showed a positive correlation with the values of red color(a) and yellow color(b) in the color test. the chewiness in the sensory evaluation showed a negative correlation with the springness in the mechanical characteristics. In view of the results stated above, a good recipe for steamed, Gamkugsulgie-dduk appeared that the contents of the ingredients used were 291g of rice flour, 9g of Chrysanthemum indicum petals(3% of rice flour) , 30g of sugar, and 3g of sat, 60ml of water.

Analysis of the Characteristics of Water Quality Difference Occurring between High Tide and Low Tide in Masan Bay (만조와 간조시 마산만 수질의 농도차 발생 특성의 분석)

  • Slack-tide sampling was carried out at 6 stations at high and low tide for a tidal cycle during spring tide of the early summer (June) and summer (July, August) of 2016 to determine the difference of water quality according to tide in Masan Bay, Korea. The mixing regime of all the water quality components investigated was well explained through the correlation with SAL. In the early summer and summer, TURB, DSi and NNN which mainly flow into the bay from the streams and SS, COD, AMN and $H_2S$ which mainly indicate the internal sink and source materials have a property of conservative mixing and non-conservative mixing, respectively. The conservative mixing showed a good linear relationship of the water quality between high and low tide, and the non-conservative mixing showed a variation of different pattern each other. Factor analysis performed on the concentration difference data sets between high and low tide helped in identifying the principal latent variables for them. In early summer, multiple effects (tidal action, natural influx and internal sinks and sources etc.) acted in combination for the differences to be distributed evenly in four factors (VF1~4), since there were few allochthonous inputs as a low-water season. On the contrary, in summer, the parameters showing large concentration difference at ST-1 affected by stream water were concentrated in one factor (VF1) and clearly distinguished from the parameters affected by the internal sinks and sources. In fact, there is no estuary (bay) that always maintains steady state flow conditions. The mixing regime of an estuary might be changed at any time due to the change of flushing time, and furthermore the change of end-member conditions due to the internal sinks and sources makes the occurrence of concentration difference inevitable. Therefore, when investigating the water quality of the estuary, it is necessary to take a sampling method considering the tide to obtain average water quality data.

Relations of Nutrient Concentrations on the Seasonality of Algal Community in the Nakdong River, Korea (낙동강 조류군집의 계절적 변화와 영양염 농도와의 관계)

  • The construction of the eight large weirs in the Nakdong River, the second largest river in Korea, caused big changes in the physical environment of the water system. Algal communities and their correlations with environmental factors, mainly nutrients were studied at five weir areas in the Nakdong River from 2010 to 2013. Water quality, hydrodynamics and algal composition were investigated. Results showed that flow velocities were reduced compared with that before weir construction near the areas where are located in the mid and upstreams of the Nakdong River. A seasonal algal community succession was observed and it was mainly correlated with temperature and phosphorus. Diatoms were dominated from winter to spring months and massive diatomic blooms of Stephanodiscus sp. occurred early in March during survey period. Cyanobacterial blooms of Microcystis sp. occurred from July to September 2013 and was preceded by the lower total phosphorus concentration of $0.05mg\;L^{-1}$. The correlations between total phosphorus concentrations and algal abundances were not significant during the survey periods. However, significant correlation with cyanobacteria was found in the period of weir construction after only at the GG survey site and blooms periods of 7 times in the survey sites, and its correlation coefficients were 0.53 (p<0.001) and 0.42 (p<0.01) respectively. When algal bloom was observed, partially low nutrient concentration was observed in the Nakdong River. In conclusion, partially low nutrient concentration which may result from algal bloom was observed, and we presume it caused the reduction of algal abundunces.

Physico-chemical and Microbiological Analysis of Tap Water in the Apartment in Taegu City (대규모 음용수 저장시설의 수질평가)

  • The drinking water in the apartment is stored in reservior tank and thereafter supplied each household. In case the drinking water is stored too long or insanitary, tap water might change in quality. This study was carried out to evaluate the physico-chemical and microbiological conditions of 36 samples of tap water of apartments compared to 18 samples of tap water of independence houses in Taegu City from May to October, 1987. Main findings are summarized as follows : PH values were within normal range in all samples. Samples less than 0.2ppm in residual chlorine accounted for 16.7% in the appartment and 5.6% in the independence house. Nitrite nitrogen was detected 2.8% of apartment samples only. Among the total of 54 samples, 11.1% of the apartment and independence samples were over the normal value in standard plate count. Samples more than 1.8 of most probable number(MPN) accounted for 27.8% in the apartment and 33.3% in the independence house. In result of test for residual chlorine, nitrite nitrogen, standard plate count, and MPN, the proportion of the samples revealed inappropriated in respect of drinking water standards. In case of all sorts of tests was 2.7% in apartment and nothing in independence houses, in case of 3 sorts of tests was 2.7% in apartment and 5.6% in independence houses, in case of 2 sorts of tests was 8.3% in apartment and 5.6% in independence houses, and in case of only 1 test was 25.0% in apartment and 22.2% in independence houses. Correlation between residual chlorine and standard plate count, and between standard plate count and MPN were observed. It was found that the more years since construction of apartment were, the worse tap water was in quality.

Investigation of Microbial Safety and Correlations Between the Level of Sanitary Indicator Bacteria and the Detection Ratio of Pathogens in Agricultural Water (농업용수의 미생물학적 안전성 조사 및 위생지표세균 농도와 병원성미생물 검출률과의 상관관계 분석)

  • BACKGROUND: Contaminated water was a major source of food-borne pathogens in various recent fresh produce-related outbreaks. This study was conducted to investigate the microbial contamination level and correlations between the level of sanitary indicator bacteria and the detection ratio of pathogens in agricultural water by logistic regression analysis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Agricultural water was collected from 457 sites including surface water (n=300 sites) and groundwater (n=157 sites) in South Korea from 2018 to 2020. Sanitary indicator bacteria (total coliform, fecal coliform, and Escherichia coli) and food-borne pathogens (pathogenic E. coli, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp., and Listeria monocytogenes) were analyzed. In surface water, the coliform, fecal coliform, and E. coli were 3.27±0.89 log CFU/100 mL, 1.90±1.19 log CFU/100 mL, and 1.39±1.26 log CFU/100 mL, respectively. For groundwater, three kinds of sanitary indicators ranged in the level from 0.09 - 0.57 log CFU/100 mL. Pathogenic E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes were detected from 3%-site, 1.5%- site, and 0.6%-site water samples, respectively. According to the results of correlations between the level of sanitary indicator bacteria and the detection ratio of pathogens by logistic regression analysis, the probability of pathogen detection increased individually by 1.45 and 1.34 times as each total coliform and E. coli concentration increased by 1 log CFU/100mL. The accuracy of the model was 70.4%, and sensitivity and specificity were 81.5% and 51.7%, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): The results indicate the need to manage the microbial risk of agricultural water to enhance the safety of fresh produce. In addition, logistic regression analysis is useful to analyze the correlation between the level of sanitary indicator bacteria and the detection ratio of pathogens in agricultural water.

Long term groundwater quality change using electrical conductivity and nitrate in the Geum River Basin, South Korea (금강유역의 전기전도도와 질산염을 이용한 장기적인 지하수 수질변화)

  • The study has examined alterations in groundwater quality by investigating the influence of rainfall on electrical conductivity (EC) and nitrate concentration in the groundwater of the Geum River Basin in South Korea. Mann Kendall and Sen's Slope estimator were employed to analyze the trends and estimate the trend's magnitude. The administrative map of the study area was utilized to assess the trends of these parameters within each administrative region. Seventeen years (from 2005 to 2021) of data on EC, groundwater levels (GWL), precipitation, and six years (from 2015 to 2020) of nitrate concentration data were utilized for this analysis. The results indicate that, in most administrative regions, there has been an increase in nitrate concentration, and EC, whereas precipitation has seen a slight decrease in a downstream and an increasing trend in upstream. The correlation coefficients calculated between these parameters reveal that there is no direct impact of precipitation on nitrate and EC, but a negative correlation was observed between GWL and EC. The most significant increasing trend in nitrate concentration was observed in two districts (Iksan and Gunsan ), which correspond to regions with significant agricultural activity; about 50% of these districts area are used for agricultural activities.

Analysis of Ground Water used for Agriculture in Kyonggi Province (경기지방 농업용 지하수 수질 현황)

  • We conducted this survey to find out the quality of ground water used for agriculture. Water samples mainly collected from plastic film houses which were located at Yongin City, Pyungtaek City, Hwasung Kun and Suwon City in Kyonggi Province. We measured EC, COD, ammonium, nitrate, sulfate, chlorite etc., and sampled three times in 1998. According to our survey, the ground water was suitable for irrigation purpose, but nitrate concentrations in ground water used in the intensive plastic film houses were high enough to require a special consideration or. the water and fertilizing management. On occasion of Pyungtaek, these results showed us specific. There are many differences among regions but aren't among periods on the part of nitrate concentrations. We found ground water quaky got worse as EC and nitrate value were going up. And there was high correlation between them.

Effects of Environmental Factors on Phytoplankton Succession and Community Structure in Lake Chuncheon, South Korea (환경요인이 춘천호의 식물플랑크톤 천이 및 군집구조에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of environmental factors on phytoplankton succession and community structure were studied in Lake Chuncheon located in Bukhan River, South Korea. The data were sampled at three sites such as CC1 (lower side), CC2 (middle side), and CC3 (upper side of Lake Chuncheon) from 2014 to 2017. The annual average precipitation in Lake Chuncheon was 992 mm during the study period (2014~2017), and the annual precipitation was lower than 800 mm in 2014 and 2015. The annual average water temperature, total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) ranged from 17.0 to $21.1^{\circ}C$, 0.012 to $0.019mg\;L^{-1}$, and 1.272 to $1.922mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The TN concentration was relatively high in 2015 compared with the other study years, as a drought continued from 2014 to 2015. When comparing the correlation between precipitation and environmental factors, water temperature (p<0.01) and TP(p<0.05) showed positive correlations with rainfall. The average numbers of phytoplankton cells by branch were 2,094, 2,182, and $3,108cells\;mL^{-1}$ in CC1, CC2, and CC3, respectively. CC3 is considered advantageous for phytoplankton growth, even in small pollution sources due to low water depth. As a result of analyzing the relationship between precipitation and phytoplankton, the correlation between the two was shown to be high for 2016 (p<0.01) and 2017 (p<0.05), which is when precipitation was high. However, the correlation was not clear to 2014 and 2015. The relationship between water temperature and phytoplankton indicated a negative correlation with diatoms (p<0.01), yet positive correlations with green algae (p<0.01) and cyanobacteria (p<0.01). Diatoms increased in spring and autumn, which are characterized by low water temperature, and green algae and cyanobacteria increased in summer, when the water temperature is high. Our findings provide a scientific basis for characteristics of phytoplankton and water quality and management at the Lake Chuncheon.

Study on the Meteorological Effect on the Yield of Ginseng Seedling (묘삼수량에 미치는 기상요인의 영향)

  • Seven years data on the yield of ginseng seedling were investigated to define the relations between meteorological conditions and yield of ginseng seedling. Variation of meteorological factors by years are showed in the order precipitation, hours of sunshine and temperature. The variation of temperature by years was biggest in June, whereas smallest figure in April. Variation of yield of ginseng seedling in different quality by years was biggest in number of short weighted seedling and least in that of usable seedling. Highly significant correlations were confirmed between number of usable seedling and number of total seedling, and between number of total seedling and precipitation from January to March, respectively. A significant negative correlation was recognized between the number of usable seedling and temperature in July but correlation between number of usable seedling and precipitation in May was positive. It suggests that water management in seedbed have to be started from May.

Photosynthetic Characteristics and Primary Production by Phytoplankton with Different Water Quality of Influent in Open Waters of Constructed Wetlands for Water Treatment (수질정화용 인공습지 개방수역에서 유입수질에 따른 식물플랑크톤의 광합성특성 및 유기물생산력)

  • The photosynthetic characteristics and primary production by phytoplankton in open waters of two wetlands (the Banwol and the Donghwa wetland) of Sihwa Constructed Wetland with different water chemistry were investigated to provide the information for the wetland management considering the water treatment efficiency. During the study period (from March to October, 2005) the primary productivity in open waters ranged from 481 to 11,275 mgC $m^{-2}$ $day^{-1}$, which is very high compared with the eutrophic level of 600mgC $m^{-2}$ $day^{-1}$. From the analysis of the photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) model parameters, the photosynthetic characteristics may be affected by different concentration and ratio of nutrient (N and P) between two wetlands. Assimilation number (AN) was higher in the Donghwa wetland (average AN: 8.5gC $gChl^{-1}$ $hr^{-1}$) with high P and low N/P ratio than the Banwol wetland (average AN: 5.8gC $gChl^{-1}$ $hr^{-1}$) with high N and high N/P ratio. This result indicates that AN may be concerned with phosphorus than nitrogen and low NIP ratio. Positive correlation (R=0.81) was observed between the initial slope and AN, implying that AN was high in case of phytoplankton having more active photosynthesis ability under low light. On the other hand, maximum photosynthesis (Pmax) was related positively with chlorophyll a concentration showing correlation coefficient of 0.47. In this study, considering the high primary production through phytoplankton photosynthesis in open waters of Sihwa Constructed Wetland, the produced organic matter by phytoplankton may affect the water quality within wetland and its efficiency of water treatment. Also, the photosynthetic characteristics may be affected by different nutrient enrichment (especially phosphorus) of wetlands. This study suggests that the production by phytoplankton and its characteristics in open water of constructed wetland for water treatment should be considered to improve the removal efficiency of organic matter.
