  • We investigated the effect of age at initial correction, of 44 refractive amblyopic patients duration of correction on corrected visual acuity with the lapse of time for mean 33months(3months-59months). Full cycloplegic corrections were prescribed at the initial visit to all subjects. The distribution of initial corrected visual acuity was 0.02 to 0.5. Age at initial correction varied from 3 years to 12 years. The refractive error appeared to have the greatest influence on the visual outcome, showing continuous visual improvement after initial correction. But the age at initial correction did not appear to influence on the initial and final corrected visual acuity showed a significant difference, irrespective of age at the initial correction Or degree of anisometropia.

  • Objectives: Decreased fertility and impaired health owing to early menopause are significant health issues. Smoking is a modifiable health-related behavior that influences menopausal age. We investigated the effects of smoking-associated characteristics on menopausal age in Korean women. Methods: This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2012. Menopausal age in relation to smoking was analyzed as a Kaplan-Meier survival curve for 11 510 women (aged 30 to 65 years). The risk of entering menopause and experiencing early menopause (before age 48) related to smoking were assessed using a Cox proportional hazards model. Results: The menopausal age among smokers was 0.75 years lower than that among non-smokers (p<0.001). The results of the Cox proportional hazards model showed pre-correction and post-correction risk ratios for entering menopause related to smoking of 1.26 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09 to 1.46) and 1.27 (95% CI, 1.10 to 1.47), respectively, and pre-correction and post-correction risk ratios for experiencing early menopause related to smoking of 1.36 (95% CI, 1.03 to 1.80) and 1.40 (95% CI, 1.05 to 1.85), respectively. Conclusions: Smokers reached menopause earlier than non-smokers, and their risk for experiencing early menopause was higher.

  • Marine reservoir correction $({\Delta}R)$ values are measured using two species of mollusk tests collected by NFRDI in 1942 before nuclear bomb testing to convert the radiocarbon age to calendar age in Korean coastal waters more accurately. The ${\Delta}R$ values are calculated to be $-117\pm45\;^{14}C\;yr$ in the southwestern coast of Korea and $-160\pm35\;^{14}C\;yr$ in southeastern coast. These values are similar to those in Chinese coast of the Yellow Sea $(-81\pm60\~-178\pm50\;^{14}C\;yr$, indicating that regional reservoir $^{14}C$ ages of these areas are lower than mean global reservoir $^{14}C$ age. The lower ${\Delta}R$ values in these areas are presumed to be mainly caused by influence of fresh-water inflow. The ${\Delta}R$ values presented In this study enhance the accuracy in converting radiocarbon age to calendar age in Korean coastal waters.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of spectacle correction therapy instead of occlusion therapy for refractive amblyopia treatment. Spectacle correction were prescribed to give the same effect as a occlusion therapy by under correction for normal eye and there was no additional treatment but only spectacle correction for hyperopic amblyopia. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. In hyperopic amblyopia after correction, initial visual acuity($Mean{\pm}SD$) was $0.36{\pm}0.13$ and final visual acuity($Mean{\pm}SD$) was $0.82{\pm}0.23$. 2. Regardless with age, there was significant differences between initial acuity and final acuity, it shows improvement in visual acuity after spectacle correction treatment. 3. Initial correction age did not influence the length of treatment and success rate of treatment, so that ambyopia correction effect not related with age. 4. Compared with initial visual acuity with final visual acuity, initial visual acuity was in proportion to final visual acuity. 5. Incidence was higher in hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism than myopia and myopic astigmatism in refractive amblyopia group and the therapy was more effective for hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism than myopia and myopic astigmatism. 6. Treatment was effective even for children who is older than 8 years.

  • This paper is to investigate the effect of the curing temperature on strength development of concrete incorporating cement kiln dust(CKD) and blast furnace slag (BS) quantitatively. Estimation of the compressive strength of the concrete was conducted using the equivalent age equation and the rate constant model proposed by Carino. Correction of Carino model was studied to secure the accuracy of strength development estimation by introducing correction factors regarding rate constant and age. An increasing curing temperature results in an increase in strength at early age, but with the elapse of age, strength development at high curing temperature decreases compared with that at low curing temperature. Especially, the use of BS has a remarkable strength development at early age and even at later age, high strength is maintained due to accelerated pozzolanic activity resulting from high temperature. Whereas, at low curing temperature, the use of BS leads to a decrease in compressive strength. Accordingly, much attention should be paid to prevent strength loss at low temperature. Based on the strength development estimation using equivalent age equation, good agreements between measured strength and calculated strength are obtained.

  • In this paper, strength correction factors of the concretes incorporating ordinary Portland cement(OPC), fly ash(FA) and blast furnace slag(BS) with 50% of water to binder ratio due to temperature drop for standard room temperature(20±3℃) are provided. For this, strength development was done based on equivalent age method. For calculating the equivalent age, apparent activation energy was obtained with 24.69 kJ/mol in OPC, 46.59 kJ/mol in FA, 54.59 kJ/ol in BS systems. According to the estimation of strength development of the concretes, the use of FA and BS resulted in larger strength drop than that of OPC under low temperature compared to standard room temperature. Hence, strength correction factors(Tn) for OPC, FA and BS are suggested within 4~17℃ with every 3MPa levels.

  • Purpose. This study categorizes vision correction subjects by age and gender, and aims to find out which glasses or contact lenses the subjects of each age group show preference based on the answers of the questionnaires answered by the subjects. Methods. A study was conducted in the form of a questionnaire through SNS on the types of correction tools used for the purpose of correcting ametropia for the general public from their teens to their 50s. Results. As for the most preferred method for correcting asymmetry, in the case of teenagers, glasses were the most common at 50%, glasses and contact lenses the most at 43.8% each, and glasses in their 30s at 50%. Those in their 40s had the most glasses at 75%, and those in their 50s wore glasses and sunglasses at 50%. Conclusions. Since the demand for vision correction and eye protection methods varies according to age and gender, it is necessary to identify and design the flow of these demands in the existing market. Therefore, it is necessary to make a judgment that can contribute to the development of eye health targeting the main customer base and the provision of appropriate services to consumers.

  • Twelve patients underwent surgical correction of total anomalous pulmonary venous connection[TAPVC] between Sep. 1989 and May 1993. There were 9 boys and 3 girls whose ages ranged from 10 days to 17 month [median 1.2 month]. Six patients were less than 1 month of age at operation. The anomalous drainage was supracardiac in 6, cardiac in 2, infracardiac in 2, and mixed in 2. There were 3 early death, and its mortality rate was 25%. There were no operative mortality after Sep. 1991. Age at operation, presence of preoperative pulmonary venous obstruction, preoperative assisted ventilation and type of anomaly did not affect early mortality. Late pulmonary venous obstruction was developed in 4 patients between 1 month to 4 month after operation. Among these patients, 2 were died and one was reoperated and well, and the other one was not operated because of patient`s refusal. We conclude that late pulmonary venous obstruction is fatal and its early detection and correction is important for improving late survival.

  • Clinodactyly is defined as an angulation of a digit in the radio-ulnar plane. This anomaly can be congenital, dominantly inherited, or acquired due to trauma or inflammation. Although the deformity usually causes little functional impairment, correction is made because of cosmetic problems. Male subject, with polydactyly on thumb(Wassel's type VII) received first surgery at the age of one. And at the age of six, abnormal growth on the radial side of the first metacarpal bone and ulnar deviation of the distal phalanx of the thumb at the interphalangeal joint had developed. The authors used the growing bony segment from the first metacarpal bone as a bone graft for the correction of clinodactyly on thumb. Z-plasty incision was made on the concave(ulnar) side of thumb and a wedge osteotomy was made on the distal phalanx. The bone graft was inserted into the gap of the distal phalanx of the thumb and fixed it with K-wires. Deformity of the metacarpal bone and clinodactyly on thumb was corrected effectively without donor site morbidity with noticible growth of the grafted metacarpal bone 12 months after surgery.
