  • Clausal segmentation is the method that parses Korean sentences by segmenting one long sentence into several phrases according to the predicates. So far most of researches could be useful for literary sentences, but long sentences increase complexities of the syntax analysis. Thus this paper proposed Two-Level Clausal Segmentation using sense information which was designed and implemented to solve this problem. Analysis of clausal segmentation and understanding of word senses can reduce syntactic and semantic ambiguity. Clausal segmentation using Sense Information is necessary because there are structural ambiguity of sentences and a frequent abbreviation of auxiliary word in common sentences. Two-Level Clausal Segmentation System(TLCSS) consists of Complement Selection Process(CSP) and Noncomplement Expansion Process(NEP). CSP matches sentence elements to subcategorization dictionary and noun thesaurus. As a result of this step, we can find the complement and subcategorization pattern. Secondly, NEP is the method that uses syntactic property and the others methods for noncomplement increase of growth. As a result of this step, we acquire segmented sentences. We present a technique to estimate the precision of Two-Level Clausal Segmentation System, and shows a result of Clausal Segmentation with 25,000 manually sense tagged corpus constructed by ETRl-KONAN group. An Two-Level Clausal Segmentation System shows clausal segmentation precision of 91.8%.

  • Innovative translation circumstances encouraged by scientific technique have become an element that increases realization and possibility of expanding sign language translation and Korean sign language translation is facing a new challenge and opportunity. This study raises following questions and search for answers. First, when and how did Korean sign language translation appear in the course of the historical changes in Korean sign language? Second, what is the form and characteristic of translation produced as a result of Korean sign language translation? Third, what is the present condition and prospect of Korean sign language translation? Accordingly, this study examined how Korean sign language translation was formed historically and the form and characteristics of Korean sign language translation using integrated literature review method. As a result of the study, first, the form and characteristics of Korean sign language translation classified according to the historical transition process into latent phase, formation phase, and expansion phase were revealed. Second, the forms and characteristics of Korean sign language translation according to the Korean sign language corpus project and machine translation were derived. In addition, it apprehends its present condition and proposes its future prospect.

  • Developing English-Korean machine translation system requires the construction of information about the languages, and the amount of information in English-Korean transfer dictionary is especially critical to the translation quality. Newly created words are out-of-vocabulary words and they appear as they are in the translated sentence, which decreases the translation quality. Also, compound nouns make lexical and syntactic analysis complex and it is difficult to accurately translate compound nouns due to the lack of information in the transfer dictionary. In order to improve the translation quality of English-Korean machine translation, we must continuously expand the information of the English-Korean transfer dictionary by collecting the out-of-vocabulary words and the compound nouns frequently used. This paper proposes a method for expanding of the transfer dictionary, which consists of constructing corpus from internet newspapers, extracting the words which are not in the existing dictionary and the frequently used compound nouns, attaching meaning to the extracted words, and integrating with the transfer dictionary. We also develop the tool supporting the expansion of the transfer dictionary. The expansion of the dictionary information is critical to improving the machine translation system but requires much human efforts. The developed tool can be useful for continuously expanding the transfer dictionary, and so it is expected to contribute to enhancing the translation quality.

  • Ultrastructural changes in the cells of the corpora allata of the pine moth, Dendrolimus spectabilis Butler, were studied by electron microscope to know the structural correlates of hormone production by the gland during the larval-pupal-adult transformations. Mitochondria are in active phases from the overwintered to the last instar larvae and from the pupae just after pupation to the 20-day old pupae, while they are in inactive phases from the making cocoon stage to the prepupae just before pupation. The peripheral allatum cells have electron dense granules in the intracellular vacuoles of smooth-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum in the larval life, particularly in the overwintered larvae and in the early adults but the swollen smooth-surfaced intracytoplasmic vacuoles made by expansion of an end of the tubular rough endoplasmic reticulum, some of which contain fibrous proteins, are observed in addition to the vacuoles in the intercellular spaces in which the vacuoles grow by fusing each other from the mature larvae to the prepupae, both of them disappearing during just before pupation. After pupation the cytolasmic vacuoles develop again in the allatum cells so that they seem to begin the secretory activity. The fact that the neurosecretory granules stored within the axons terminated in the corpus allatum are visible only from the 20-day old pupa about two days before abult emergence to the 5-day old adult means that the secretion from the allatum cells is under the control of the brain from the late pupal stage, while the secretion during from the larval to the early pupal life has no relation with the brain, because such granules are not observed within the axons. It is, therefore, suggested that at least two kinds of hormone are released with the ages as far as concerned with the production and secretion mechanisms of the allatum hormone: juvenile hormone is released until the last instar larvae without any direct stimlation of the brain and gonadotropic hormone is secreted from the late pupa to the adult by getting brain's stimulation and that the secretory phases observed from the mature larvae to prepupae are presumably concerned with the biosynthesis of protein owing to the ecdysone and those from the early pupal stage in uncontrolled condition of the brain with the prothoracotropic activity.
