Mediating Role of Liquidity Policy on the Corporate Governance-Performance Link: Evidence from Pakistan

  • Based on the theoretical underpinnings of the agency theory and liquidity theory, the purpose of this study is to show how managers who want to enhance the performance of Pakistan's non-financial sector can use liquidity policy in relation to corporate governance. Nowadays, Pakistan is facing a severe liquidity crisis; this study contributes by examining the mediating role of liquidity on the link of corporate governance-performance. We use data from 63 firms from 2010 to 2018, excluding 17 outliers. To analyze the data, we use the Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SURE) model and nlcom-Stata test. Our findings support the mediating role of liquidity on the link between corporate governance and performance. In addition, the results show that corporate governance improves performance. Furthermore, the study supports a significant positive association of liquidity and performance. For robustness, we use two performance variables - return on assets (ROA) and Tobin's q (TQ) - where ROA represents full mediation and TQ indicates partial mediation. This study helps to use liquidity policy to strengthen the inside and outside dimensions of corporate governance mechanisms that improve the performance of firms. Overall, these findings suggest better disclosure, transparency, and solutions to auditing issues that add value to the firms.

The Effects of Performance Measures on Organizational Performance - Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives (성과측정지표의 이용이 조직성과에 미치는 영향 - 새마을 금고를 중심으로)

  • Recently the corporate environment is rapidly changing with the development of information technology and globalization of market environment. In order to acquire competitive advantage and promote long- term growth in this corporate environment, korean federation of community credit cooperatives are adopting PMS. However, there have been few studies on the beneficial effects of PMS. A survey was conducted suing a questionnaire on korean federation of community credit cooperatives and collected data were analyzed. This study examines the relation between performance measures and organizational performance. first, financial measures had a significant positive(+) effect on organizational performance. second, non- financial measures had a significant positive(+) effect on organizational performance. Such findings suggest that use of performance measures have a positive impact on organizational performance. the effects of non-financial measures on organizational performance are found more clearly than the effects of financial measures on organizaitonal performance.

  • Initiatives for corporate social responsibility (CSR) have often served as sources of competitive advantage in the business world. Although the adoption of CSR practices in the hotel industry continues to increase, empirical research on the relationship between them and financial performance in the industryremains scarce. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of various dimensions of CSR on the financial performance of corporations in the U.S. hotel industry. Data include Kinder, Lydenburg & Domini social performance scores and Compustat data of hotels from 1991 to 2015 identified using a Standard Industrial Classification code. Results of ordinary least squares regression using Stata revealed that efforts toward CSR have significantly affected the financial performance of numerous hotels. Such findings can initiate discussions and inspire future research on CSR in the hospitality industry.

The Effect of Prior Financial Performance on Organizational Reputation and Earnings Management

  • The paper aims to investigate the linkage among prior financial performance, organizational reputation and earnings quality. Firstly, it examines the influence of prior financial performance on organizational reputation and on earnings quality. Secondly, this research explores the moderating role that prior financial performance plays in the causal relationship from organizational reputation to earnings quality. Thirdly, the mediating role of organizational reputation in the effect of prior financial performance on earnings quality is analyzed. The empirical findings show that, prior financial performance positively affects both earnings quality and organizational reputation that in turn partly mediates the causal connection from prior financial performance to earnings quality; whereas prior financial performance imposes a positive moderation in the influence of organizational reputation on earnings quality. This research is expected to provide scholars and practitioners with a thorough understanding of the complex link among prior financial performance, organizational reputation and earnings quality. That helps them to deliver good decisions on the investment of suitable resources in maintaining and enhancing their organizational reputation, which assures a higher quality of reported earnings that in turn improves involved stakeholders' confidence in their firm. This likely leads the firms to gain better performance in the future.

Bayesian Network Analysis for the Dynamic Prediction of Financial Performance Using Corporate Social Responsibility Activities (베이지안 네트워크를 이용한 기업의 사회적 책임활동과 재무성과)

  • This study analyzes the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities on financial performances using Bayesian Network. The research tries to overcome the issues of the uniform assumption of a linear function between financial performance and CSR activities in multiple regression analysis widely used in previous studies. It is required to infer a causal relationship between activities of CSR which have an impact on the financial performances. Identifying the relationship would empower the firms to improve their financial performance by informing the decision makers about the different CSR activities that influence the financial performance of the firms. This research proposes General Bayesian Network (GBN) and presents Markov Blanket induced from GBN. It is empirically demonstrated that all the proposals presented in this study are statistically significant by the results of the research conducted by Korean Economic Justice Institute (KEJI) under Citizen's Coalition for Economic Justice (CCEJ) which investigated approximately 200 companies in Korea based on Korean Economic Justice Institute Index (KEJI index) from 2005 to 2011. The Bayesian Network to effectively infer the properties affecting financial performances through the probabilistic causal relationship. Moreover, I found that there is a causal relationship among CSR activities variable; that is Environment protection is related to Customer protection, Employee satisfaction, and firm size; Soundness is related to Total CSR Evaluation Score, Debt-Assets Ratio. Though the what-if analysis, I suggest to the sensitive factor among the explanatory variables.

  • Due to the recent mid- to long-term slump and falling growth rates in the global economy, interest in organizational structures that create new products or services as a new alternative to survive and develop in an opaque environment both internally and externally, and enhance organizational sustainability through changes in production methods and business innovation is increasing day by day. In this atmosphere, we agree that the growth of small and medium-sized venture companies has a significant impact on the national economy, and various efforts are being made to enhance the technological innovation capabilities of the members so that these small and medium-sized venture companies can enhance and sustain their performance. The purpose of this study is also to investigate how the technological innovation capabilities of small and medium-sized venture companies correlate with the performance of knowledge management and to analyze the role of network capabilities to organize the strategic activities of enterprise to obtain the resources and organizational capabilities to be used for value creation from external networks. In other words, research was conducted on the impact of technological innovation capabilities of small and medium venture companies on knowledge management performance by using network capabilities as parameters. Therefore, in this study, we would like to verify the hypothesis that innovation capabilities will have a positive impact on knowledge management performance by using network capabilities of small and medium venture companies. Economic activities based on technological innovation capabilities should respond quickly to new changes in an environment where uncertainty has increased, and lead to macro-economic growth and development as well as overcoming long-term economic downturns so that they can become the nation's new growth engine as well as sustainable growth and survival of the organization. In addition, this study was conducted by setting the most important knowledge management performance within the organization as a dependent variable. As a result, R&D and learning capabilities among technological innovation capabilities have no impact on financial performance. In contrast, it was shown that corporate innovation activities have a positive impact on both financial and non-financial performance. The fact that non-financial factors such as quality and productivity improvement are identified in the management of small and medium-sized venture companies utilizing their technological innovation capabilities is contrary to a number of studies by those corporate innovation activities affect financial performance during prior research. The reason for this result is that research companies have been out of start-up companies for more than seven years, but sales are less than 10 billion won, and unlike start-up companies, R&D and learning capabilities have more positive effects on intangible non-financial performance than financial performance. Corporate innovation activities have been shown to have a positive (+) impact on both financial and non-financial performance, while R&D and learning capabilities have a positive (+) impact on financial performance by parameters of network capability. Corporate innovation activities have been shown to have no impact on both financial and non-financial performance, and R&D and learning capabilities have no impact on non-financial performance. It could be seen that the parameter effects of network competency are limited to when R&D and learning competencies are derived from quantitative financial performance. Exploration of Constituent Factors for Corporate Reputation and Development of Index Using Online News : Sentiment Analysis and AHP Application (온라인 뉴스를 이용한 기업평판 구성요인 탐색 및 지수 개발 연구 : 감성분석과 AHP적용)

  • Because of the recent development of information and communication technology, companies are exposed to various media such as blogs, social media, and YouTube. In particular, exposed news affects the company's reputation. So, while positive news can improve corporate value, negative news can lead to financial losses for the company. In this study, we redefine corporate reputation as social responsibility, vision and leadership, financial performance, products and services through existing literature, and conducted an AHP survey with a total of four components to calculate the weight of each factor. As a result of the calculation, the proportion of financial performance was the highest at 0.41, and products and services, vision and leadership, and social responsibility were the lowest. In addition, in order to measure the reputation of a company, it is classified as a component that defines online news using the LDA technique. In addition, through sentiment analysis, an index for each corporate reputation factor was derived, and the reputation index was calculated by combining it with the AHP analysis result, and Spearman ranking correlation analysis was performed to secure the validity of the research results. Therefore, the significance of this study is that the definition and importance of the constituent factors can contribute to the future planning and development direction of the company, and also contribute to the derivation of the corporate reputation index. This study is significant in that a new analysis methodology that applied AHP analysis results to sentiment analysis was suggested.

Board Gender Diversity and Firm Financial Performance Dispersion: Evidence from the Middle East

  • This study examines the relationship between board gender diversity and financial performance. The annual data of Palestinian nonfinancial listed enterprises from 2015 to 2019 was analyzed using a longitudinal panel analysis for the study's purposes. When conditional mean regression methodologies were used in the study, the results indicate that there is an insignificant relation between board gender diversity and firm financial performance. However, when analyzing women directors' effect on a firm's financial performance, endogeneity is always a concern, therefore, we test for endogeneity by employing the Darbin-Wu Housman test and then by using 2SLS. Nevertheless, when looking at the dispersion of a firm's performance using quantile regression, the results show that having women on the board improves financial performance slightly, especially for high-financial-performing firms. The findings indicate that there is a legal significant gap hindering the protection of gender diversity in boardrooms, and limiting the existence and representation of women in leadership positions, specifically, board of directors. The results of this study contribute to corporate governance and business culture literature by shedding the light on the importance of board gender diversity, to improve the firm financial performance, and hence, protect the interests of all shareholders' categories.

CEP-CFP Relationship and Its Moderators : A Meta-analysis (환경성과와 재무성과 간의 관련성과 조절요인에 관한 메타분석)

  • We examined the heterogeneity in the financial -environmental performance nexus, carrying out a meta-analysis of 48 outcomes from 26 empirical studies. Multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) was performed in this study to facilitate the analysis of the structural relationship among an array of study characteristics. As expected, the results of analyzing the multiple studies of the general corporate environmental performance and financial performance link suggested a significant positive relationship. Some of the results of the moderator analysis suggest that empirical studies using self-reporting measurement and structural equation method benefited from environmental performance as much as or more than the archival and regression method.

Group-affiliated Firms and Corporate Social Responsibility Activities

  • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is one of the strategies for managing firms' business activities but may have heterogeneity depending on ownership structures. This study investigates the association between group-affiliation and CSR activities. Drawing on a theory from the prior research, this study predicts that group-affiliated firms are less likely to invest on CSR activities. For instance, prior research finds that controlling shareholders expropriate the values of minority shareholders. As one of the motivations of investing on CSR activities is the harmonization among the stakeholders, it leads to the prediction that firms controlled by large shareholders are less likely to engage in CSR activities. Second, group-affiliated firms under poor financial performance benefit from other group members through sharing their financial resources. Thus, there is less incentive for managers of group-affiliated firms to increase their financial performance by conducting CSR. By leveraging firms listed in Korean stock market and CSR score from Korea Economic Justice Institute, the result shows that the group-affiliation is negatively related to CSR activities. The result is consistent in case of applying propensity score-matched sample. Based on the findings of this study, this paper contributes to the related literature by showing the significant association between group-affiliation and CSR decisions.
