  • This paper examines the relationship between ownership structure and level cash holdings in an emerging country, namely, Saudi Arabia, by constructing a corporate governance mechanism (foreign ownership, family ownership, institutional and managerial ownership). This paper uses data from 100 listed firms at Saudi Stock Exchange (TADAWUL) from 2011 to 2019. The firm's decision to hold cash has come to the fore in the last two or three years as a result of the recent global financial crisis, and the impact that this has had on the firms' ability to raise funds from external sources. Using the random-effect generalized least square (GLS) regression model, the findings reveal that foreign and family ownership negatively influences cash holdings, while managerial ownership has a positive association with cash holdings. Further, institutional ownership did not have a direct effect on cash holdings in Saudi Arabia. Our results suggest that ownership structure include foreign ownership, family and managerial ownership is an essential vehicle to promote the performance of cash holding of all the 100 public-listed non-financial firms in Saudi Arabia. We recommend that sound policies should be targeted toward foreign ownership, family, and managerial ownership since they are essential to improve cash holding in Saudi Arabian firms.

  • This study conducted empirical tests on contemporary finance theories for corporate cash holdings, such as trade-off, pecking order, and agency theory. There is ongoing debate on the possibility of excess cash savings by domestic firms, including chaebols in the Korean capital markets. Thus, it may be worthy to identify any financial characteristics based on each aforementioned theory as an extension of previous studies on similar subjects. Two primary hypotheses were postulated and tested, and the following empirical results were obtained. First, principal component analysis (PCA) provides evidence that nine out of the twenty explanatory variables showed a significant influence on the level of corporate cash holdings, such as cash conversion cycle in trade-off theory and leverage in pecking order theory. Second, the chaebol firms that decreased cash holdings after global financial turmoil may be affected by financial factors that include investment opportunities and foreign ownership according to the PCA. The results may reinforce the outcomes derived from previous research on corporate cash holdings. Based on the robust results, large firms in advanced or emerging capital markets could approach the optimal level of the cash reserves.

  • This paper examines there is any differences among determinants of cash holdings and marginal value of cash depending on the life-cycle of firm. To accomplish these objective, we collect financial and market data of KRX listing firms for a period of 2001-2013. We present evidence of significant effect of life-cycle on the cash holdings determinants and marginal value of cash. Specially, the effect of investment opportunity related variable are varies through life-cycle. The results also suggest that marginal values of cash in the introduction stage and exit stage is higher than those in other stages. Overall, this means that the motive of cash holdings in Korean firms is weak. and shareholders place different value on a firm's cash holdings depending on the life-cycle.

  • This study was conducted to determine whether there is a significant relationship between board structure and board committee qualities and corporate cash holdings in Pakistan. For this objective, 168 listed enterprises on the PSX for the period 2016 to 2020 were chosen as a sample from a population of 436 non-financial firms. Multiple regression analysis was used in the study to discover a relationship between board structure and board committee features and cash holdings. The study's findings revealed that board size, executive directors, and board independence have no significant impact on the firm's cash holding because they play no important part in the firm's cash holding. Auditors, audit committee size, audit committee meetings, and the compensation committee, on the other hand, have no major impact on the firm's cash holdings because they are not relevant indicators to compare with cash holdings. While board meeting frequency and leadership structure both have a negative influence on cash holding, board meeting frequency increases firm costs, whereas leadership structure causes agency problems. Results were supported by the pecking order theory, cash flow theory, and agency theory.

  • This study examines the effect of managerial ownership on the value of firms' cash holdings. According to the management entrenchment hypothesis, managers have incentives to make decisions that can undermine shareholders' value for their own private interests. In this situation, as the managerial ownership increases, investors may evaluate that the cash held by the company may be utilized inefficiently and the value of the cash holdings may decrease. On the other hand, based on the incentive alignment hypothesis, the value of cash holdings may increase as investors perceive cash holdings to be effectively used to increase corporate value as managers' interests are in agreement with shareholders. Empirical results show that the value of cash holdings decreased as managerial ownership increased. This study finds a contribution in that it presents empirical evidence on whether the cash held by the company is differentially evaluated according to the level of the managerial ownership.

  • This study addresses one of the curent issues in modern finance, which investigates financial profile on the levels of the chaebol firms' cash hoardings in the domestic capital market. Iit may be imperative to search for robust and consistent financial determinants of cash holdings as well as identifying any changes or trend of the determinants affecting the corporate cash reserves in the post-era of the global financial turmoil, considering that interest parties at the government and corporate levels, still seem to have a controversy or debate on excess cash savings. Two hypotheses were postulated and empirically tested for the chaebol firms in the study, such as any transitional changes of the relevant factors on cash holdings and unique attributes of financial factors discriminating between the different type of domestic stock markets.

  • This study examined one of the contemporary issues on debate to identify any significant financial determinants on the cash holdings of the cheabol firms in the Korean domestic capital markets. Several important findings on the financial characteristics affecting the cash holdings were evidenced by utilizing various methodologies for statistical estimations. Financial or managerial implications with discussion were provided for the pronounced factors such as CASHFLOW, MVBV, REINVEST, and AGENCY. Assuming that the chaebol firms were overall subject to the financial constrains, they may increase or stockpile cash reserves as internal capital for future investment opportunities or repayment of existing debt, rather than external financing burdened by a high cost of capital. Given the on-going controversy on the optimal level of corporate cash holdings coupled with any foreseeable capital transfer among the associated nations through the investment vehicles such the FTAs (Free Trade Agreements) or TPP (Trans-Pacific Pacts), any empirical findings of the study may shed new light on identifying financial determinants which may significantly affect the level of cash holdings for the business conglomerates, the 'chaebol' firms, in the Korean capital markets.

  • This study investigated one of the controversial issues on debate or even controversial between policy makers at the government and corporate levels: To examine any financial determinants on the cash holdings of the firms in the advanced and emerging capital markets. Futhermore, it focused on the large representative firms headquartered in the U.S. and the Republic of Korea, taking into account scarcity of the previous literature concentrated on the comparative studies on this particular subject. Several legitimate, but robust econometric estimations such as static and dynamic panel data models and Tobit regression, were applied to investigate possible financial factors ono the cash liquidity. Given the continued debates or arguments on the excess cash reserves between interest partied at the government and corporate levels in the advanced and/or emerging capital markets, and more accelerated capital transfers among associated nations by engaging in the arrangements of the FTAs, the results of the study may provide a vision to search for the optimal level of corporate cash holdings for firms in the two nations.

  • This study examined one of the contemporary financial aspects, the level of corporate cash holdings for the firms belonging to the chaebols in the Korean capital markets. Being accompanied by various alternative econometric methodologies such as static and dynamic panel data model, stepwise OLS, and Fama-Macbeth modelm this research extended the preceding Kim's study (2015) in anticipation of validating the results to identify any financial factors which may significantly affect the chaebol firms' cash reserves. Several financial characteristics such as CASHFLOW, MVBV, REINVEST, and AGENCY, were found to be statistically significant factors on the level corporate liquidity, along with CCC as cash conversion cycle in the models. It may be plausible that any outcomes of this study may be applied to enhance the efficiency of financial strategies of the chaebol firms on cash holdings, thereby expediting the development of the domestic capital markets status quo toward the advanced one in the market classification.

  • This study investigated one of the contemporary financial issues that is still being debated among governmental policy makers, corporate managers, and investors in the domestic capital market. We attempted to identify the most optimal level of cash holdings for firms during the most updated fiscal years (from 2011 to 2015). The study utilized empirical methodologies, such as ANCOVA and RANCOVA, with respect to the 'inter-' and 'intra-industry' analyses for KOSPI-listed firms. Regarding the first hypothesis testing for inter-industry influence, we revealed with statistical significance that there were differences; however, there were only 3 pronounced industries among the 25 industries sampled in this study. Regarding the second hypothesis, only a few (i.e. two) industries showed no statistically significant intra-industry influence. Based on our results, most KOSPI-listed firms still seem to be searching for their optimal levels of cash reserves. Hence, we can anticipate that the value maximization as a corporate goal can be achieved after adjusting the current levels of their cash holdings according to the optimal points.
