Ethyl methacrylate (EMA) monomer coupling onto the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film surface was attempted to enhance the interfacial adhesive force between PVDF-polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bilayer films via dielectric barrier corona discharge. The interfacial forces were quite enhanced when PVDF films were treated by corona discharge in an EMA 1% atmosphere. The contact angle of PVDF films decreased due to corona treatment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that the carbon and oxygen content of the PVDF film surface increased with corona discharge while the fluoride content decreased. The curve fitting of XPS $C_{1s}$ peaks revealed that the non-polar C-C bonded carbon and oxygen-bonded carbon increased gradually with corona treatment, while the fluorine-bonded carbon decreased.
The purpose of this research is to study on characteristics of corona ignitor which was designed for ignition of plasma, used at hard coating, surface treatment and thin film preparation, at high pressure. Corona ignitor composed of hollow type inner electrode and ring type external electrode. Though corona voltage increased with increasing distance between electrodes, corona discharge can be controlled stably. The gas flow in hollow type inner electrode and the construction between electrodes affect a length of corona flame and corona phenomenon. It is possible to ignite the . plasma, usually generated at low pressure(10 Torr), at high pressure(100 Torr) by corona ignitor.
A new type of nonthermal plasma reactor utilizing ferroelectric pellets is proposed to generate nonthermal plasma efficiently, which is used for simultaneous control of various pollutant gases. Electric charges stored on ferroelctric pellets by corona discharge between a corona tip and a mesh electrode provide partial electrical discharges among ferroelectric pellets. These partial electrical discharges can enhance partial discharges around the surface of ferroelectric pellets. This method utilizes wide reacting area of ferroelectric pellets and partial discharge. Positive and negative dc voltage are applied to the corona tip to generate partial discharges, and corona currents are estimated to investigate charge storage on ferroelectric pellets as function of time and charge relaxation time constants of ferroelectric pellects. As a result, charge relaxationtime, dielectric constants of ferroelectric pellets, polarity of applied voltage and applied time influence partial discharges among ferroelectric pellect.
Polyester(PET) fabrics were treated by corona discharge equipment with the small amount of flame retardants to enhance flame retardancy. The surface properties of corona discharged fabrics were investigated using water penetration time, SEM, ESCA, and TGA. When corona discharge was applied to PET fabrics, the flame retardants were evenly distributed. As a result, the oxygen-containing functional groups were produced, and the LOI value increased. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the flame retardancy was operative by gas-phase mechanism.
A vital step in magnetic tape manufacturing is the surface modification of polymer substrate prior to ink application. A critical element for good adhesion of magnetic ink on polymeric substrate is the ability to join ink in cost-effective manner. Corona discharging is one of the effective methods of modifying polymer surface to improve adhesion while maintaining the desirable properties of the film itself. Surface treatment by corona which is exposure of film surface to electron or ion bombardment, rather than mere exposure to active species, like atomic oxygen or ozone, can enhance adhesion by removing contaminant, electret, roughening surface, and/or introducing reactive chemical groups. Reactive neutrals, ions, electron and photons generated during the corona treatment interact simultaneously with polymers to alter surface chemical composition, wettability, and thus film adhesion. However, it is highly recommended that extensive chains scission be avoided because it can lead to side-effect by forming sticky matter, resulting in dropouts. This paper reviews principles of surface preparation of polymer substrate by corona discharging. In addition, the experimental section provides a description of parameter optimization on corona discharging treatment and its side-effect. Experimental results are discussed in terms of surface wetting as determined by contact angle measurements.

In this article modification of wool fibers and fabrics by pulse corona discharge and enzymes, in particular purified keratinase with a single component has been carried out to improve their surface properties. The shrinkproofing, tensile strength, weight loss, and the primary hand values calculated from the mechanical properties of the dual treated wool fabrics were investigated. In addition, the surface morphology of wool fiber was observed under the dry and wet conditions using an environmental SEM, ESEM.
In this study, we investigate the effects of corona-discharge pre-treatment on the properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which are used as flexible transparent electrodes. The CNTs are deposited on PET (polyethylene terephthalate) substrates using a spray coating method. Prior to the deposition of CNTs, the PET substrates are corona-treated by varying the feeding directions of the PET substrate and the numbers of treatments. The variations in the surface morphologies and roughnesses of the PET substrates due to corona-treatment are characterized via atomic force microscopy (AFM). Dynamic contact angles (DCAs) of the corona-treated PET substrates are measured and analyzed as functions of the treatment conditions. Also, the sheet resistances and visible-range transmittances of the CNTs deposited on PET substrates are measured before and after bending test. The experimental results obtained in this study provide strong evidences that the adhesive forces between CNTs and PET substrates can be substantially enhanced by corona-discharge pretreatment.

This paper describes the frequency characteristics and the number of pulse of ultrasonic signals due to partial discharge occurred at each electrode. The defects which could occur in a transformer were simulated by using needle-plane electrode, IEC(b) electrode and void electrode. As a result, the dominant frequency of ultrasonic signals generated by corona in oil and partial discharge in void was hardly changed regardless with the applied voltage, but in case of surface discharge in oil, its dominant frequency moved to low frequency with the applied voltage. The increasing rate of pulse number per second was high in order of the surface discharge in oil, the partial discharge in void, the corona in oil.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sheets were treated with corona discharge to produce peroxy radicals on the surfaces. The peroxy radicals formed on the PVC surfaces were subsequently used as initiators for the graft polymerization of acrylic acid or acrylamide in an aqueous solution. Introduction of acrylic acid and acrylamide on the PVC sheet could be confirmed by the observation of carbonyl and primary amine absorptions based on carboxylic acid and amide, respectively. The water contact angle$(90^\circ)$ of PVC sheet was constant, irrespective of time, while corona-treated and functional monomer-grafted PVCs were slowly increased with time, showing the rearrangement of surface polar groups in air condition. The water contact angle of PVC sheet$(90^\circ)$ was decreased by corona treatment$(78^\circ)$, and further decreased by the grafting of acrylic acid$(55^\circ)$ and acrylamide$(56^\circ)$ , indicating increased hydrophilicity of the modified surfaces. The half-life periods of surface voltage on acrylic acid- (62 sec) and acrylamide-grafted PVC (147sec) were significantly decreased when compared to those on PVC (3,115 sec) and corona-treated PVC (463sec). These results mean that acrylic acid- and acrylamide-grafted PVCs could be used as the antistatic sheets.

This paper presented the effects of accumulation of surface charges on hydrophobicity level and the surface states of silicone polymer used for outdoor insulator treated by ultraviolet irradiation and corona discharge through measuring surface voltage decay of a corona-charged specimen were investigated. The surface resistivity by the method of the surface potential decay was compared with the value by the three electrodes methods. From this study, it was found that the accumulation of surface charges above a critical surface voltage on silicone insulating materials could lead to the temporary loss of surface hydrophobicity. In addtion, uv stress lead to a longer decay time of surface charges. We could conclude that the effects of surface charges on hydrophocity level and the changes of surface state by various artificial treatments were understood through a trend of surface potential decay.
