Determination of Corneal Aberrations Using Corneal Shape of Topographer (각막지형검사기의 각막형상을 이용한 각막수차 구현)

  • Purpose: In this study a program was developed to determine corneal aberrations using corneal shape of topographer and represented a wavefront and corneal aberrations using zernike polynomial. Methods: When the pupil size was 6 mm, we calculated new corneal shape data with zernike polynomials using corneal shape data of ORBSCAN topographer. We programmed the wavefront construction using ray tracing for corneal shape, then represented corneal aberrations having zernike polynomial with 6th order and 28 terms. Conclusions: We developed programs to determine a wavefront and corneal aberrations using corneal shape of ORBSCAN topographer. Theses results will be applied to a development of new topographer and prescription of contact lens and OK lens.

Ten Years of Results of Modified Frontalis Muscle Transfer for the Correction of Blepharoptosis

  • Background Conventional frontalis transfer may cause a range of complications. In order to overcome complications, we made modifications to the surgical technique, and compared the outcomes of patients who underwent conventional frontalis transfer with those of patients who underwent modified frontalis transfer. Methods We conducted a retrospective study of 48 patients (78 eyes) who underwent conventional frontalis transfer between 1991 and 2003 (group A) and 67 patients (107 eyes) who underwent modified frontalis transfer between 2004 and 2014 (group B). The frontalis transfer procedures were modified conform to the following principles. The tip of the frontalis muscle flap included soft tissue that was as thick as possible and the soft tissue on the tarsal plate was removed to the greatest extent possible. A double fold was created in cases of unilateral ptosis. In order to evaluate the objective effects of modification, preoperative and postoperative values of the marginal distance reflex 1 (MRD1), the corneal exposure area, and the decrease in eyebrow height were compared between the two groups. Results In group A, patients showed an improvement of 1.19 mm in the MRD1, a 6.31% improvement in the corneal exposure area, and a 7.82 mm decrease in eyebrow height. In group B, patients showed an improvement of 2.17 mm in the MRD1, an 8.39% improvement in the corneal exposure area, and an 11.54 mm decrease in eyebrow height. The improvements in group B were significantly greater than those in group A. Conclusions Modified frontalis transfer showed better results than the conventional procedure and provided satisfactory outcomes.

Study of the Correlation and Ocular Components in Preschool Children (취학전 어린이들의 안광학 성분 측정 및 상관성 분석)

  • Purpose: This study was to know the correlation among the dimensions of ocular components and refractive error on kindergarten children. Methods: The subjects were 80 preschool students who had no eye diseases. The refraction, corneal diopter, corneal radius, inter-pupillary distance, axial length, anterior chamber depth and dominant eye were measured and analysed. Results: It was shown that the highest correlation was between the axial length and the corneal diopter (r=-0.674, p=0.000). The ratio of height, weight and axial length (AL) to Corneal radius (CR) ratio were positively correlated with the axial length (r=0.351, r=0.408, r=0.488). The spherical equivalent of the refractive error and the corneal diopter were negatively correlated with the axial length (r=-0.302, r=-0.674). The anterior chamber depth and the corneal diopter were positively correlated with the AL/CR ratio (r=0.422, r=0.280). The spherical equivalent of the refractive error and the corneal radius were negatively correlated with the AL/CR ratio. Conclusions: It was shown that the AL/CR ratio was a very important indicator for diagnosing the refractive error of the preschoolers.

Association between Axial Length and Anthropometric Value in Korean Children (한국 어린이의 안축장과 신체 계측치와의 관련성)

  • Purpose: To investigate the relationship between axial length (AL) and anthropometric parameters in Korean children. Methods: This study included 40 urban school children aged 11-12 years (mean age, $11.95{\pm}0.22$ years; 45.0% girls) residing in Seoul, South Korea. AL (using partial coherence laser interferometry), corneal radius, refractive error, height (m), and weight (kg) were measured. Body mass index (BMI $[kg/m^2]=weight/[height]^2$) and degree of obesity (DO[%]=[actual weight standard weight]/standard weight) were calculated. Furthermore, the number of hours spent reading, watching television, and using a computer every day was determined using a detailed questionnaire. Results: The students had a mean spherical equivalent refraction of $1.06{\pm}0.84$ D. Weight (r=0.427, p=0.006), BMI (r=0.508, p=0.001), and DO (r=0.371, p=0.018) showed a significant positive correlation with AL. Furthermore, longer AL was significantly associated with heavier weight (p=0.041), and higher BMI (p=0.015), and higher DO quartiles (p=0.042). After adjust for age, sex, and near-work activities, multivariate linear regression models showed that weight, BMI, and DO were still significantly associated with AL. Among the near-work activities, daily reading time was significantly associated with AL. Conclusions: AL was positively related to weight as well as daily reading time in Korean urban school children.
