  • This research paper presents the use of different forms of literature by the PhD researchers of the Department of Political Science and the Department of Public Administration, Punjabi University, Patiala. It is assessed by analyzing the resources cited in the PhD theses awarded by Punjabi University, Patiala during 2015-2019. The different bibliographic forms of the references have been analyzed in order to find out the year-wise submission, average citations per thesis, authorship pattern, chronology, use of electronic resources, and format of citations in both the subjects under study. It has been found in this study that average citations per thesis in Political Science is more (200.53) than Public Administration (160.6). Books are most preferred form in both the subjects. Majority of the citations in both the subjects are from the period 2000-2009. Ranked list of journals for both the subjects have been prepared to identify core journals. The core journals in both the subjects are 9. Bradford Multipliers have been calculated and application of Bradford Law of Scattering has also been tested for both the subjects. It is expected that the present study will help librarians in selecting, retaining and cancelling the existing journals in Political Science and Public Administration.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the factors determining core journals in a field based upon the results of the citation analysis of the journals in the field of Korean History(KH). In order to verify the determinant factors, dividing the articles of the KH journals into their novelty and author's seniority, the following hypotheses were established. Hypothesis 1: When a KH journal publishes more articles on prehistoric and ancient eras than others, the journal will have higher chance to be included in the core journals. Hypothesis 2: When a KH journal publishes more articles by senior researchers than others, the journal will have higher chance to be included in the core journals. To achieve the purpose, the cited articles found in the two sample journals, namely, Backsan Hakbo and Hanguksa Yongu were analysed during the past 20 years from 1962 to 1981. Applying the Hirst's Discipline Impact Factor method to the the study, Historical Science Impact Factor(HSIF) on the samples itself and the historical era dealt with in the articles and the seniority of the authors during every five-year period. Based upon thr present study to ver~fy the two hypotheses, the following conclusions have been reached. 1) Tht. most influencing sublect mattcr era or1 thix liSIF of the lo~lrual is arranged in prehistoric arid ancient, Koryo, Chosun, recent era, and the others by order of era. 2 ) Clial~g~~lg a fringe or semicore journal u~to a core j ~ u r n a l , very IISIF' 011 it> article e r a 1s grown up arrd prcllistoric a ~ ~ d ancierlt era:. are, s p c c ~ a l l ~ , incr.eased high relatively. • The purposes of this study were to identify core journals for pharmaceutical researches in Korea and to examine the research domains of Korean pharmaceutical researchers. Journal citation frequency analysis and journal co-citation analysis were performed on the research papers of Korean pharmaceutical researchers. Korean researchers' citation data were gathered from SCOPUS for foreign journals and KSCD for domestic journals. 116 core journals were identified through citation frequency analysis and journal relationships were suggested as a pathfinder network of journals. Factor analysis on journal correlation matrix resulted in 18 subject domains and related journal lists were also given.

  • We report results of selection-bias-free approaches to the analysis of the impact of open access (OA) models on citation metrics. We studied reference groups of Gold and Green OA articles and the group of non-OA (Paywall) articles with the new functionality of the Web of Science Core Collection database, the InCites platform of Clarivate Analytics, and the Dimensions database of Digital Science. For each reference group we obtained the values of the percent of cited articles and citation impact and their dependence on the depth of the citation period. Different research fields were analyzed in two schemas of the InCites platform. We report the higher values and growth rates of the citation metrics: citation impact and %Cited, in the OA reference groups over the Paywall group. The Green OA articles demonstrate the highest values of citation metrics among all the OA models. Dependence of the value of citation impact on citation period follows linear law with R2 values close to 0.9-1.0. The overall annual growth rates of citation impact of the Green OA, Gold OA, and the Paywall articles, k equal, respectively, 3.6, 2.4, and 1.4 in Dimensions and 4.6, 3.6, and 2.3 in the Web of Science Core Collection. We suppose that earlier results reported for the articles in pure OA journals vs. articles in Paywall journals were affected by the high citation impact of the Green and Hybrid OA articles that could not be elucidated in the Paywall journals at that time.

  • How has the use of academic journals changed since the academic library purchase policy changed from selective journals based on core journals to package purchases by big deal? The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of supply and size of academic journals in university libraries on the use of journals. For this purpose, this study used the actual usage statistics of e-journals of K Academic Libraries during 2013-2015. The analysis shows that there is a so-called long-tail shape in which demand shifts to niche products that are effective in online platforms. Analysis of the use of academic journals by year for three years showed that the use of electronic journals in K Academic Libraries appeared to be a perfect Pareto shape, which is concentrated in the top 20% of journals. In particular, in 2015, the top 5% of journals accounted for nearly 80% of the total usage. Despite the changes in the supply method and size of academic journals, users' use of journals was still concentrated in core journals.

  • The study investigated the intellectual structure of the library and information science field by journal co-citation analysis on thirty LIS journals with high journal impact factors. Patterns of journal-to-journal citation show the structure of journals in the field, visualized by a networked map of the journals. The result shows journals that can be considered as the core group and as the peripheral group, which corresponds to other studies for investigating the field's intellectual structure using other techniques, such as cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling.

  • Despite the rapid adoption of electronic journals, the need for print journals still remains. The current level of foreign journals acquisition poses a threat to strengthening the national research capabilities. Furthermore, there is too much overlap among academic libraries for foreign journals. We propose the establishment of government funded foreign research information centers to systematically acquire and distribute foreign print journals. We discuss specific approaches to selecting and operating such centers. Foreign research information centers are expected to enhance the national scholarly information infrastructure as well as the academic libraries' core capabilities.

  • A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the use of SCI and awareness of SCI source journals by fatuity members at Korean medical colleges. 104 out of 180 faculty members randomly chosen from four prestigious medical colleges returned the questionnaires malled to them. Korean medical researchers rarely used SCI as their main source of research Information. They rather used the MEDLINE to seek the research information probably because they are easily available from their local libraries. Furthermore. many respondents mistakenly Identified 'SCI journals ranked by Impact factor' lists found In Journal Citation Reports (JCR) with the SCI Itself. That Is. In Korean medical research community. the virtue of SCI Is not as an Index but as a source of SCI Journal Impact factor Information. It Is because the Interest in impact factor Is highly associated with the pressure to publish In one of those SCI source Journals. The collected data shows that even the medical professors at these prestigious medical colleges suffer from the lack of knowledge and information about SCI. SCI source journals and their Impact factors. Nontheless, core journal titles of a medical specialty selected by Korean medical professors are mostly high-Impact Journals of Its field (1.e.. belong to the upper 1/3) zone ranked by Impact factor). Within each specialty. the Journal ranks assigned to the selected core Journals by the respondents agree with the ranks by SCI Impact factor to a great extent. That Is. the Korean medical scientists awareness on SCI Journals as defined in this study is in good standing. Therefore. a policy of a medical college to require medical professors to publish In SCI Journals to be promoted or a policy to evaluate a researcher's work by the fact that his research papers are published In SCI Journals can be positively pursued.
