  • The primary insulation system used in an oil-filled transformer is Kraft paper, wood, porcelain and, of course, oil. Modern transformers use paper that is chemically treated to improve its tensile strength properties and resistance to aging caused by immersion in oil. These insulation papers are mainly aged to thermal stress. Over the course of the insulation paper and oil's life it is exposed to high temperatures, oxygen and water. Its interaction with the steel of the tank and core plus the copper and aluminium of the windings will eventually cause the chemical properties of the oil to decay. High temperature have an effect on mechanical strength of cellulous paper using the layer insulation. We made two aging cell in which thermal aging tests of insulation papers and mineral oil are conducted. It is measured dielectric strength, number of acid, moisture, etc. of insulation paper and oil aged in the aging cells.

  • Dental ceramics is well known to have excellent esthetics, biocompatibility as well as high compressive strength. However, the fragility of ceramics against tensile and shear loads leading to the delayed fracture of micro crack on ceramic surface and the backwardness of ceramic fabrication technique limit the usage of ceramic materials in dentistry. Among all ceramic materials, zirconia has been introduced to overcome the drawback of conventional dental ceramics in the field of dentistry due to the nature of zirconia featuring proper opalescence and high fracture toughness. Also, novel manufacturing techniques enable ceramic materials to prepare high esthetic anterior and posterior all ceramic system. In this paper, it is introduced and discussed that novel techniques characterizing the bond strength between zirconia core and veneering ceramics and analyzing the fluorescence of dental ceramics in order to overcome the gap between the results of basic research and the feasibility of the results in the field of dental clinics.

  • The Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) was established at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in 1974 to develop innovations in rock mechanics research and education. During the last four decades, extensive rock mechanics research has been conducted at the EMI. Results from uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), point load index (PLI), punch penetration (PP), and many other types of tests have been recorded in a database that has been unexamined for research purposes. The EMI database includes over 20,000 tests from over 1,000 different projects including mining and underground construction, and analysis of this database to identify relationships has been started with preliminary results reported here. Overall, statistically significant correlations are identified between bulk density and mechanical strength properties through UCS, BTS, PLI, and PP testing of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. In this paper, bulk density is considered as a surrogate metric that reflects both mineralogy and porosity. From this analysis, sedimentary rocks show the strongest correlation between the UCS and bulk density, whereas metamorphic rocks exhibit the strongest correlation between UCS and PP. Data trends in the EMI database also reveal a linear relationship between UCS and BTS tests. For the singular case of rock coral, the database permits correlations between bulk density of the core versus the deposition depth and porosity. The EMI database will continue under analysis, and will provide additional insightful and comprehensive understanding of the variation and predictability of rock mechanical strength properties and density. This knowledge will contribute significantly toward the increasingly safe and cost-effective geostructures and construction.

  • Whole, bast and core fibers of kenaf cultivar Tainung-2 were pulped under different pulping methods, thermomechanical and kraft pulping methods. The physical and optical properties of kenaf TMP(thermomechanical pulp) and KP(kraft pulp) handsheets were investigated and the results from the study are summarized as follows: Yields of TMP and KP were $77{\sim}87%\;and\;43{\sim}52%$, respectively. There was no significant change in apparent density between kenaf KP and USKP(unbleached softwood kraft pulp) but TMP showed a little lower apparent density. Bast pulp had the lowest apparent density regardless of pulping methods. Tensile strength of kenaf KP was higher than that of TMP but similar to that of USKP. Both TMP and KP handsheets of bast fraction showed the highest tear strengths among whole, bast, and core fractions. Core fraction showed the lowest tear strengths under different pulping methods. In general burst strength of kenaf pulp under different pulping methods was lower than that of USKP, and kenaf pulp had better stiffness than USKP. Brightness of kenaf KP and TMP was higher than that of USKP. There was no significant variation in opacity between kenaf pulp and USKP even though kenaf pulp showed a little lower opacity. The main difference in paper quality between the core fiber and bast fiber is derived from the fact that bast fiber is long and thin, whereas core fiber is short and thick.

  • High strength steels have been continually being developed to improve in fuel economy in automotive and ensure safety of passengers. New bonding and welding methods have been required for improving weldability on high strength steels. In this study, resistance spot welding and Weld-bond with nugget diameters of 4.0mm, 5.0mm, 6.0mm and 7.0mm were produced and tested, respectively. In order to confirm the effect of nugget diameters on tensile shear characteristic of the Weld-bond, tensile shear characteristics of Weld-bond were compared with those of resistance spot welding and adhesive bonding. Peak load of Weld-bond were increased as the nugget diameter increases. After appearing maximum peak load continuous fracture followed with second peak owing to load being carried by resistance spot weldment. Fracture modes of the adhesive layer in Weld-bond fractures were represented by mixed fracture mode, which are cohesive failure on adhesive part and button failure at resistance spot welds. The results showed that the tensile shear properties can be improved by applying Weld-bond on TRIP steel, and more apparent with nugget diameter higher than 5${\surd}$t.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate evaluation technique of damaged depth of concrete exposed at high temperature. In order to evaluate damaged depth of core picked at member under fire, the 12 specimens have been made with variables of concrete strength(20Mpa, 40Mpa, 60Mpa). Water absorption after heating has been measured and split tensile stress test was performed. The results show that the deeper of the depth from heating face, water absorption ratio is smaller and tensile failure stress is larger. Using this technique at damage evaluation of fired structure, We evaluate damaged depth of member under fire and determine the reasonable strengthening range.

  • Recently, the production of oil and gas at the arctic ocean and offshore has been growing. Accordingly, S500 steel with the high tensile strength and excellent toughness has been used and flux cored wire that can be welded to the S500 has been required. In this study, we carried out observation of microstructures, mechanical properties and CTOD (crack tip openning displacement) in the weld zone that GMA (gas metal arc) welded with different component of $TiO_2$ flux core wire (the main components, rutile or Ti-slag) for S500 steel. Weld zone produced with Ti-slag flux cored wire has formed a enough acicular ferrite and shown excellent impact toughness at $-40^{\circ}C$, tensile strength at room temperature and CTOD at $-20^{\circ}C$. As a result, the developed flux cored wire was suitable for S500 steel.

  • Naval ships are designed to have a variety of active and passive systems to defend against enemy threats. One of the passive defense systems is to protect crew members and core equipment against the threat by using the outer plate of the equipment. This study was intended to deal with design methods against small arms ammunition and fragments. The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials has measured the ballistic limit velocity of two types of high-tensile plate materials (AH36 and EH36) widely used in ships and offshore structures through tests in cooperation with various related organizations, and the result data is continuously accumulated. Based on the accumulated test results and data, such as mil test certificates of plate materials, it is intended to estimate the protection limit speed of high-tensile plates and to develop a simple calculating formula that can be used in the early design stage.
