The probabilistic information of directional extreme wind speeds is important for precisely estimating the design wind loads on structures. A new joint probability distribution model of directional extreme wind speeds is established based on observed wind-speed data using multivariate extreme value theory with the t-Copula function in the present study. At first, the theoretical deficiencies of the Gaussian-Copula and Gumbel-Copula models proposed by previous researchers for the joint probability distribution of directional extreme wind speeds are analysed. Then, the t-Copula model is adopted to solve this deficiency. Next, these three types of Copula models are discussed and evaluated with Spearman's rho, the parametric bootstrap test and the selection criteria based on the empirical Copula. Finally, the extreme wind speeds for a given return period are predicted by the t-Copula model with observed wind-speed records from several areas and the influence of dependence among directional extreme wind speeds on the predicted results is discussed.

Intermittent streamflow is common phenomenon in arid and semi-arid regions. To manage water resources of intermittent streamflows, stochactic simulation data is essential; however the seasonally stochastic modeling for intermittent streamflow is a difficult task. In this study, using the periodic Markov chain model, we simulate intermittent monthly streamflow for occurrence and the periodic gamma autoregressive and copula models for amount. The copula models were tested in a previous study for the simulation of yearly streamflow, resulting in successful replication of the key and operational statistics of historical data; however, the copula models have never been tested on a monthly time scale. The intermittent models were applied to the Colorado River system in the present study. A few drawbacks of the PGAR model were identified, such as significant underestimation of minimum values on an aggregated yearly time scale and restrictions of the parameter boundaries. Conversely, the copula models do not present such drawbacks but show feasible reproduction of key and operational statistics. We concluded that the periodic Markov chain based the copula models is a practicable method to simulate intermittent monthly streamflow time series.
This study analyzes the dependence structure between energy (crude oil, natural gas, coal) prices and economic (real and financial) uncertainty. Summary of the results of the dependence structure between energy prices and economic uncertainty analysis is as follows. First, the results of model selection show that the BB7 copula model for the pair of crude oil price and economic uncertainty, the Joe copula model for the pair of natural gas price and economic uncertainty, and the Clayton copula model for the pair of coal price and economic uncertainty were chosen. Second, looking at the dependency structure, it showed that the pair of energy (crude oil, natural gas, coal) prices and real market uncertainty show positive dependence. Whereas, the only pair of financial market uncertainty-crude oil price shows positive dependency. In particular, crude oil price was found to have the greatest dependence on economic uncertainty. Third, looking at the results of tail dependency, the pair of real market uncertainty-crude oil price and pair of real market uncertainty-natural gas price have an asymmetric relationship with the upper tail dependency. It can be seen that the only pair of financial market uncertainty-crude oil represents asymmetric relationships with the upper tail dependencies. In other words, combinations with asymmetric relationships have shown strong dependence when negative extreme events occur. On the other hand, tail dependence between economic uncertainty and coal price be not found.

The copula-based models have been successfully applied to hydrological modeling including drought frequency analysis and time series modeling. However, uncertainty estimation associated with the parameters of these model is not often properly addressed. In these context, the main purposes of this study are to develop the Bayesian inference scheme for bivariate copula functions. The main applications considered are two-fold: First, this study developed and tested an approach to copula model parameter estimation within a Bayesian framework for drought frequency analysis. The proposed modeling scheme was shown to correctly estimate model parameters and detect the underlying dependence structure of the assumed copula functions in the synthetic dataset. The model was then used to estimate the joint return period of the recent 2013~2015 drought events in the Han River watershed. The joint return period of the drought duration and drought severity was above 100 years for many of stations. The results obtained in the validation process showed that the proposed model could effectively reproduce the underlying distribution of observed extreme rainfalls as well as explicitly account for parameter uncertainty in the bivariate drought frequency analysis.
This paper considers we consider the estimation of copula parameters based on residuals in stochastic regression models. We prove that a semiparametric estimator using residual empirical distributions is consistent under some conditions and apply the results to the copula-ARMA model. We provide simulation results for illustration.
In general, common cause failures (CCFs) have been modeled with the assumption that components within the same group are symmetric. This assumption reduces the number of parameters required for the CCF probability estimation and allows us to use a parametric model, such as the alpha factor model. Although there are various asymmetric conditions in nuclear power plants (NPPs) to be addressed, the traditional CCF models are limited to symmetric conditions. Therefore, this paper proposes the copulabased CCF model to deal with asymmetric as well as symmetric CCFs. Once a joint distribution between the components is constructed using copulas, the proposed model is able to provide the probability of common cause basic events (CCBEs) by formulating a system of equations without symmetry assumptions. In addition, Bayesian inferences for the parameters of the marginal and copula distributions are introduced and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms are employed to sample from the posterior distribution. Three example cases using simulated data, including asymmetry conditions in total failure probabilities and/or dependencies, are illustrated. Consequently, the copula-based CCF model provides appropriate estimates of CCFs for asymmetric conditions. This paper also discusses the limitations and notes on the proposed method.
Value at Risk (VaR) is the most popular measure for market risk. In this paper, we consider the VaR estimation of portfolio consisting of a variety of assets based on multivariate copula model known as vine copula. In particular, sparse vine copula which penalizes too many parameters is considered. We show in the simulation study that sparsity indeed improves out-of-sample forecasting of VaR. Empirical analysis on 60 KOSPI stocks during the last 5 years also demonstrates that sparse vine copula outperforms regular copula model.
The estimation of the rainfall quantile is of great importance in designing hydrologic structures. Conventionally, the rainfall quantile is estimated by univariate frequency analysis with an appropriate probability distribution. There is a limitation in which duration of rainfall is restrictive. To overcome this limitation, bivariate frequency analysis by using 3 copula models is performed in this study. Annual maximum rainfall events in 5 stations are used for frequency analysis and rainfall depth and duration are used as random variables. Gumbel (GUM), generalized logistic (GLO) distributions are applied for rainfall depth and generalized extreme value (GEV), GUM, GLO distributions are applied for rainfall duration. Copula models used in this study are Frank, Joe, and Gumbel-Hougaard models. Maximum pseudo-likelihood estimation method is used to estimate the parameter of copula, and the method of probability weighted moments is used to estimate the parameters of marginal distributions. Rainfall quantile from this procedure is compared with various marginal distributions and copula models. As a result, in change of marginal distribution, distribution of duration does not significantly affect on rainfall quantile. There are slight differences depending on the distribution of rainfall depth. In the case which the marginal distribution of rainfall depth is GUM, there is more significantly increasing along the return period than GLO. Comparing with rainfall quantiles from each copula model, Joe and Gumbel-Hougaard models show similar trend while Frank model shows rapidly increasing trend with increment of return period.
Crude oil is a resource that is being used as a raw material in major industries, representing the price of the raw material market. It is also an important element that affects the shipping market in terms of fuel costs for freight vessels. As a result, crude oil and freight rates are closely related. Therefore, from January 2009 to June 2019, this study analyzed the dependency structure between oil price (WTI) and freight rates (BDI, BCI, BPI, BSI, and BHI) using daily data. The main results are summarized as follows. First, according to the copula results, survival Gumbel copula in WTI-BDI, Clayton copula in WTI-BCI, Survival Joe copula in WTI-BPI, Joe copula in WTI-BSI, and survival Gumbel copula in WTI-BHI were selected as the best-fitted model. Second, looking at Kendall's tau correlation, there is a positive correlation between BDI and oil price. Furthermore, freight rate index (BCI, BPI, BSI) and oil price show positive dependencies. In particular, the strongest dependence was found in BCI and oil price returns. However, BHI and oil price show a negative dependency. Third, looking at the tail-dependency structure, a pair between oil price and BDI, BCI showed a lower tail-dependency. The pair between oil price and BSI showed the upper tail-dependency.

This study developed a trivariate Copula function based drought frequency analysis model to better evaluate the recent 2014~2015 drought event. The bivariate frequency analysis has been routinely used for the drought variables of interest (e.g. drought duration and severity). However, the recent drought patterns showed that the intensity can be regarded as an important factor which is being characterized by short duration and severe intensity. Thus, we used the trivariate Copula function approach to incorporate the trivariate drought characteristics into the drought frequency analysis. It was found that the return periods based on the trivariate frequency analysis are, in general, higher than the existing bivariate frequency analysis. In addition, this study concludes that the increase in drought frequency claimed by the Gumbel copula function has been overestimated compared to the Student t Copula function. In other words, the selection of copula functions is rather sensitive to the estimation of trivariate drought return periods at a given duration, magnitude and intensity.
