  • Fecal sterols, nonylphenolic compounds (NPs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in surface water from Masan Bay and its adjacent rivers in February 2005. Concentrations of coporstanol (Cop), an indicator of fecal pollution, in surface water ranged from <10 to 13,853 ng/L, and concentrations of nonylphenol, the most toxic of the NPs, ranged from 10.2 to 481 ng/L, and concentrations of PAHs ranged from 8.61 to 223 ng/L. The concentrations of the compounds measured in this study were lower than or comparable to those at other locations in Korea and other countries. The contamination of Cop and PAHs in surface water was associated with the discharge from rivers passing through cities and/or industrial complexes. The NP contamination was associated with wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents through outfalls as well as riverine discharge. Compared to ecotoxicological values, the concentrations of NPs from rivers, the mouths of rivers, and WWTP outfall areas exceeded guidelines, suggesting that hot spot areas may pose a potential risk to sensitive species.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of sea tangle and hypoglycemic agent on lipid metabolism in normal and dabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawely rats were fed AIN-76 based experimental diets containing 5%(w/w) cellulose or 15%(w/w) sea tangle for 3 weeks, after which diabetic groups were made diabetic by intramuscular injection of streptozotocin(STZ, 45mg/kg BW). Metformin(350mg/kg BW) as a hypoglycemic agent was given once a day using a feeding tube for 5 days. Body weight grains were reduced significantly by STZ treatment, but not influenced by metformin feeding. Blood glucosel levels in sea tangle groups were reduced, compared with those in cellulose groups. Metformin feeding showed the lowering effect of blood glucose. Plasma levels of triglyceride were increased significantly in diabetic rats, but decreased in metformin group by sea tangel feeding. Total cholestero contents showed a similar tendency with triglyceride, but were reduced in diabetic groups without metformin by sea tangle feeding. Plasma levels of HDL-cholesterol were reduced in diabetic rats, compared with those in normal rats. There was a significant increase in fecal weights in diabetic rats fed sea tangle. Fecal contents of cholesterol were lower in diabetic rats than in normal rats. In normal rats, it tended to increase by sea tangle feeding, but not significantly. Fecal excretions of coprostanol and coprostanone were reduced significantly in diabetic rats, compared with those of normal rats. It tended to increase in diabetic rats by simultaneous feeding of sea tangle and metformin, but not significantly. Diabetes reduced fecal excretion of bile acid, but it was increased by sea tangle and metformin feeding.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary grape pomace on lipid metabolism and hepatic morphology of rats fed a high fat diet. The high fat diet contained additional 15% lard to AIN 93-based diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed experimental diets containing 5% grape pomace for 4 weeks. Serum activities of glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) were not changed by high fat and grape pomace feeding. Serum concentration of triglyceride in rats fed a high fat diet was decreased significantly by dietary grape pomace. Hepatic concentrations of total lipid, total cholesterol and triglyceride were reduced in grape pomace groups with a high fat diet. Fecal concentrations of total cholesterol and triglyceride were increased in grape pomace groups with a high fat diet. The fecal content of coprostanol was not different among the groups. Dietary grape pomace increased the fecal excretion of cholesterol and coprostanone in rats fed a high fat diet. The fecal excretion of bile acid was not affected by feeding grape pomace in rats fed a high fat diet. Light micrographs of liver tissue revealed lipid droplets were increased by a high fat diet, but dietary supplementation of grape pomace tended to alleviate such changes.

  • The current study examined the effects of radish leaves powder on the excretion of fecal triglyceride, and sterol and hepatic UDP-glucuronyl transferase (UDPGT) activity in rats fed hypercholesterolemic diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 100$\pm$10 g were randomly assigned to normal control group (N group), normal diet with 5% radish leaves powder supplemented group (NR) and hypercholesterolemic groups, which were sub-divided into radish leaves powder free diet group (HC) and 2.5% (HRL), 5% (HRM), and 10% (HRH) radish leaves powder supplemented groups. The experimental diets were fed ad libitum for 4 weeks. Fecal weights and water contents were significantly increased in all radish leaves powder supplemented groups (NR, HRL, HRM, and HRH) than that of N and HC groups. Fecal total lipid contents including fecal neutral and acidic sterols in radish leaves powder supplemented groups were higher than those of the HC group, and especially that of HRH group was the highest among all experimental groups. Hepatic UDPGT activity of HRH group was 38% higher than that of HC group. Excretions of fecal bile acid were increased 2.3 and 2.7 folds in HRM and HRH groups compared with that of HC group. And neutral sterol, coprostanol, and coprostanone contents of them were higher in radish leaves supplemented groups than in HC group. These results suggest that radish leaves may act as potential substitute for a dietary fiber capable of improving a gastrointestinal function and lipid metabolism.

  • Alkylphenols (8), chlorophenols (2), bisphenol A, eoprostanols (2) and cholesterol compounds were analyzed in the surface water and surface sediment taken from Gwangyang Bay and surrounding streams in 2001. Among the target analytes, nonylphenol and dihydrocholesteyol compounds were detected with high concentration and high frequency. t-Octylphenol, bisphenol A and coprostanols were detected only in some sediment samples from the stream. The highest concentration of nonylphenol was determined in stream sample, and concentrations of nonylphenol in the inner part of Gwangyang Bay were higher than those in the out part. Nonylphenol concentrations in the surface seawater and surface sediment samples ranged from 4.0 to 74.0 ng l$\^$-1/ and from 3.1 to 74.3 ng g$\^$-1/ dry wt., respectively. Partition coefficient (LogK$\_$oc/) of nonylphenol between sediment and water was 4.8. Nonylphenol nnd dihydrocholesteol concentrations in the stream surface sediment samples ranged from 4.6 to 808.6 and from 78.4 to 1133.6 ng g$\^$-1/ dry wt., respectively. Relatively high concentrations of nonylphenol were found in the stream samples which aye flowing through industrial complex area, while dihydrocholesterol concentration was relatively high in the stream samples which are flowing through only municipal area. Seaward decreasing tyend in nonylphenol concentration was observed from the Seomjin River estuary to the Gwanyang Bay. Such trend was best supported by the strong correlation between nonylphenol concentration and salinity in water samples.
