Copper is one of the first metals utilized by humankind about 11,500 years ago. But copper is not plentiful metallic element in the earth's crust. Copper has a high thermal and electric conductivity and is relatively corrosion resistant. In principle copper is virtually 100 % recyclable as an element without loss of quality. The recycling of copper scrap reduces the energy consumption and environmental burden, comparing to the primary metal production. Currently, approximately 30% of the global copper supply provides by recycling. Copper scrap is smelted in primary and secondary smelter. Type of furnace and process steps depend on the quality and grade of scrap. Depending on copper content of the secondary raw material, refining is required, which is usually done through electrorefining. This work provides an overview of the primary copper production and recycling process.
Copper chip scrape has been occurred by cutting of copper pipe. The feasibility of copper chip scrape into the copper powder by milling was studied. Two milling type such as rod milling and horizontal balling milling were applied in this research. Copper chip can not fragmented into powder by using rod milling. In contrast to rod milling, copper chip can be changed into powder by horizontal ball milling for above 36 hours. It was found that recycling of copper chip scraps into copper powder by horizontal ball milling is possible and powder fraction percent ($75{\sim}150{\mu}m$) of milled copper chip for 48 hours is 25.3%.
Copper oxychloride used as an agricultural fungicide has been recovered from copper-containing waste etchant by the neutralization with alkali hydroxides. Large amount of copper-containing waste etchant is generated from Printed Circuit Board industry. In an environmental and economic point of view, retrieve of the valuable natural resource from the waste is important. Recycling process of copper oxychloride from the waste etchant is discovered through the our study. In the range of reaction temp. 2$0^{\circ}C$-4$0^{\circ}C$, pH 5-7, pure copper oxychloride was able to prepare and the yield of copper oxychloride was higher than 95%. Physical properties of the sample have been characterized using SEM, XRD, TGA, ICP and Atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Copper is used in many electronic components and construction parts due to its excellent electrical conductivity and heat transfer characteristics, and also used for pre-plating for double layer coating such as nickel, so that copper is an essential material in modern industry. Despite the expected increase of usage and importance on wiring, sensors and data equipment in the next generation industries, it is hard for securing stable copper supply and resource management resulting from the copper prices are fluctuating owing to the economic crisis in Europe, the low economic growth trend in China, and President Trump's commitment to public industrial facilities investment in U.S.. Since most of the domestic copper consumption is used by electrolytic copper cathode, we studied not only copper recycling technology which is being commercialized but also current research trend under the research stage. This study aims to examine the characteristics of each process and the areas where future recycling technology development is required.
It is very important in the view point of resource recycling to recover valuable metals such as copper and tin from waste electric and electronic scrap. The waste electric and electronic scrap contains significant amounts of copper, tin, and so on. In this study, a new process for extracting copper and tin contained in the waste electric and electronic scrap using waste copper slag which is generated from the melting furnace of copper smelter was presented. Advantage of the proposed process is to reuse waste copper slag instead of new fluxes as slag formatives. In each experiment, the waste electric and electronic scrap and waste copper slag were melted inputting suitable amount of CaO as an additional flux. Up to 95% of copper and 85% of tin in the raw material were extracted in a Cu-Fe-Sn alloy phase.
Shape-controlled copper oxides have been recovered from copper-containing waste etchant by neutralization with alkalihydroxide. Large amount of copper-containing waste etchant is generated from Printed Circuit Board industry. In an environmental and economic point of view, retrieve of the valuable natural resource from the waste is important. In recycling process of copper oxide from the waste etchant, reaction temperature controls shapes and sizes of the products. Copper oxide recovered below reaction temperature $40^{\circ}C$ was of a needle shape, while copper oxide comes in a platy shape above $40 ^{\circ}C$ . Physical properties of samples have been characterized using SEM, XRD, TGA and Atomic absorption spectroscopy.
In order to review the technological modulus of the recycling of urban mine resources and non-ferrous smelting process in Korea, key point of recycling process, physical separation, non-ferrous smelting process, unit operation for the recycling technology, recycling process of LS-Nikko Copper and Korea Zinc were studied. Finally, metal recycling processes of the typical non-ferrous smelters in Japan such sa DOWA Holdings and JX Holdings were compared with those of LS-Nikko Copper and Korea Zinc.
In India, recycling of treated effluent plays a major role in the industry. Particularly in copper industry, recycling techniques for treated effluents adopt conventional technologies which are not energy efficient and recovery of high quality process water, free flowing salts and sludge's is very low. This paper presents an overview of enhanced modern technology for treated effluents in copper industry making it more efficient with high recovery of high quality process water and free flowing salts. Life cycle cost (LCC) would be 15-20% lower than the conventional technologies. The conventional technology can be replaced with this proposed technique in the existing and upcoming copper industries.
In order to obtain basic data for concentration control of alkaline copper quat (ACQ) solution in wood preservative treatment, this study investigates the change of concentration and adsorption of treating solution and active ingredient, copper oxide (CuO) and didecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC), in the process of recycling of ACQ solution. Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis), Douglas-fir (Psedotsuga menziesii) and Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) were treated with ACQ solution. The active ingredient concentration of ACQ solution was decreased continuously with increase of recycling. There are differences between extent of concentration decrease of Cu (as CuO) and DDAC. DDAC was decreased more quickly and to a higher degree than Cu for all recycling. The extent of DDAC concentration decrease was remarkable than that of Cu for wood species. The amount of DDAC adsorbed into wood decreased with the increase of ACQ solution recycling, but adsorption of Cu was little difference regardless of recycling. The adsorption of Cu into wood increased as DDAC concentration decrease by recycling of ACQ solution. This is likely due to decrease of DDAC competition with Cu for the same reaction site in wood.
Recycling processes of spent copper wires cosisnt of several steps of cutting and chopping processes for peeling covering materials followed by gravity separation processes, where copper is recovered. Because copper thin wires could be lost during further recycling processes, the wire may need to be further treated. In the present study, the copper thin wire was treated with ball milling to prevent the loss. Since the aggregation of the copper wire could be formed by bending and entangling the copper wire each other, the degree of flexion of the copper wire was measured after ball milling. When the 0.5 cm and 3 cm copper wires were used, the 0.5 cm copper wire was not bent and the 3 cm copper wires were aggregated regardless of the ball addition. When the 1 cm and 2 cm copper wires were used, the degree of flexion was remarkable when the balls were added. In the tests using 2 cm copper wires, the aggregation ratio of the copper wire gradually increased with the amount of the 20 mm alumina ball, and when 200 ml of 30 mm alumina ball was used, the aggregation ratio increased to 89.29 %, but after increasing the ball amount further, the aggregation ratio decreased. Thus, it is expected that the loss of the copper wire could be reducedif when the copper thin wire is treated with ball milling by the aggregation of copper thin wires.
