  • A study on the grinding characteristics of metal components in printed circuit boards (PCBs) scrap by a swing-hammer typeimpact mill was conducted. The PCBs scrap crushed to sizes less than 3 mm were pulverized to liberate metal components by the impact mill. The effect of rotation speed of hammer on the grinding characteristics was investigated. The particle size distribution and degree of liberation of metals such as copper and solder were measured. The effect of rotation speed and particle size on the shape sorting of metal Particles from milled PCBs was investigated using an inclined vibrating Plate. At the hammer speed of 61.3 m/s about 80% of the copper particles became larger than 297 $\mu$m while 90% of solder particles was smaller than 297 $\mu$m. In the shape sorting method, the recovery location becomes shorter as the rotation speed of hammer increases. The recovery location for particles larger than 297$\mu$m was shorter than for particles sized between 149$\mu$m and 297$\mu$m. As the recovery location becomes shorter, KI value increases towards unity while $\phi_{c}$ value decreases towards unity indicating the more roundness of metal particles.

  • In terms of resources recycling and resolving waste disposal problems, it is very important to recover precious metals like Au, Ag and Pd and valuable metals like Cu, Sn and Ni from the scraps of waste electrical and electronic equipment(WEEE) that consists of detective electrical and electronic parts discarded during manufacturing electrical and electronic equipments and waste electrical and electronic parts generated during disassembling them. In general, the scraps of WEEE are composed of various metals and alloys as well as refractory oxides and plastic components. Precious and valuable metals from the scraps of WEEE can be recovered by gas-phase-volatilization, hydrometallurgical, or pyrometallurgical processes. However, the gas-phase-volatilization and hydrometallurgical processes have been suggested but not yet commercialized. At the present time, most of the commercial plants for recovering precious and valuable metals from the scraps of WEEE adopt pyrometallurgical processes. Therefore, in this paper, the technical and environmental aspects on the important pyrometallurgical processes through literature survey are reviewed, and the scale-up result of a new pyrometallurgical process for recovering the precious and valuable metals contained in the scraps of WEEE using waste copper slag is presented.

  • Cyclic voltammetry has been applied in the basic studies for the treatment and recovery of heavy metal component contained in wastewater by electrochemical reduction. The electrochemical behaviors of zinc ion for zinc metal electrode and carbon elec-trode were characterized by voltammograms and it was showed that zinc ions were reduced to metallic form below -0.76 V vs SHE. The change in the features of crystalline form of metallic zinc upon oxidation and reduction reaction was observed by X-ray diffraction method and the Am analysis verified that zinc ions were reduced to metal on copper plate. The results of this study were regarded to be important and meaningful in the treatment of heavy metal containing wastewater and, as a result, in the obtainment of metallic product by electrochemical method.

  • The thermosyphon has been used as a heat transmission device in the heat recovery of low level energy and cooling for heat generating equipments. Many studies on the working fluids and wicks have been reported to improve the heat transfer efficiency of the thermosyphon. A low temperature heat pipe with acetone is chosen in the present study to compare the heat transfer characteristics due to pouring amount of working fluid, magnitude of power supplied and tilt angles. The thermosyphon made ⵁ$15.88{\times}0.8t{\times}600mm$ of copper, evaporation section 200mm, insulation section 25mm, condensation 375mm. Heat transfer rate of the thermosyphon increase as magnitude of power supplied increase and observe dry out phenomenon at 5~10% of pouring amount of working fluid. So thermosyphon at the 150kJ/s judged to need 12% or more. Heat transfer rate of the thermosyphon have nothing to do with tilt angles. Dry out phenomenon of the thermo syphon makes it possible that a low temperature thermosyphon may be used to control temperature and heat transfer of a system when the critical quantity of a working fluid is supplied in the thermosyphon.

  • The new metrology, Advanced Poly-silicon Ultra-Trace Profiling (APUTP), was developed for measuring bulk Cu and Ni in heavily boron-doped silicon wafers. A Ni recovery yield of 98.8% and a Cu recovery yield of 96.0% were achieved by optimizing the vapor phase etching and the wafer surface scanning conditions, following capture of Cu and Ni by the poly-silicon layer. A lower limit of detection (LOD) than previous techniques could be achieved using the mixture vapor etching method. This method can be used to indicate the amount of Cu and Ni resulting from bulk contamination in heavily boron-doped silicon wafers during wafer manufacturing. It was found that a higher degree of bulk Ni contamination arose during alkaline etching of heavily boron-doped silicon wafers compared with lightly boron-doped silicon wafers. In addition, it was proven that bulk Cu contamination was easily introduced in the heavily boron-doped silicon wafer by polishing the wafer with a slurry containing Cu in the presence of amine additives.

  • This study evaluated the feasibility of recovering and recycling nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from livestock excreta as struvite ($MgNH_4PO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$) in South Korea. Our experimental results showed that struvite precipitation was a very effective way to recover N and P from livestock excreta. Moreover, our study demonstrated that struvite precipitates from livestock excreta (SPL) contain higher concentrations of N, P, and magnesium (Mg) as compared to compost and liquid manure from livestock excreta. In addition, although SPL contain high concentrations of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), they meet the fertilizer criteria for concentrations of heavy metals. In South Korea, SPL cannot currently be used as a fertilizer due to legal constraints. Legal permission for SPL use would offer greater choice in livestock excreta management. In conclusion, recovery and recycling of N and P from livestock excreta as struvite can be an effective tool for managing nutrients in livestock excreta.

  • A part of used cables, such as electric and communication cables has already been recycled by using simple processing methods. However, it has been found that the main problems in recycling of the used cables are insufficient treatment of fine stranded wires and low recovery of copper by air separation process. It has been shown that copper can be effectively separated from the PE using a solvent treatment method. In the present study, the used communication wires having diameter of 0.4 mm are treated in the mixing solution of toluene and water at $86^{\circ}C$ for about 10 minutes. In the solvent treatment, the copper wires recovered have 10~15mm length, which are much longer than that of 1~2mm length copper wires recovered by air table concentration method used in current recycling plants. The process consisting of cutting, air separation and electrostatic separation would be recommendable for the treatment of mixed cables. In this investigation, fine copper powders can also efficiently be recovered from insulation materials using electrostatic separator at the conditions of 20~50RPM roller speed and 15~30KV high DC power.

  • A post-irradiation annealing study was conducted with use of reactor pressure vessel(RPV) steel A533B Cl.1 base metal irradiated to a dose of 4.84$\times$10$^{18}$ n/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at about 38$0^{\circ}C$. Microhardness and positron annihilation (PA) methods were used to obtain better understanding of the recovery of radiation hardening. Isochronal anneal experiments indicated that two recovery processes occur during annealing of irradiated specimens. The first recovery process occurs in the temperature range of 280-3O5$^{\circ}C$, Michrohardness and positron annihilation (PA) methods were used to obtain better understanding of the recovery of radiation hardening. Isochronal anneal experiments indicated that two recovery processes occur during annealing of irradiated specimens. The first recovery process occurrs in the temperature range of 280-305$^{\circ}C$. The variations of Ip, Iw and R parameters indicated that the formation of vacancy clusters by vacancy agglomeration and the annihilation of monovacancies are the first recovery process. The second recovery process occurs in the range of 405-49$0^{\circ}C$ and positron annihilation parameters measured indicated that the dissolution of carbon atoms decorated around vacancy-type defects and possible precipitates, and the annihilation of monovacancies give rise to the second recovery process. It was further indicated that radiation anneal hardening (RAH) in the range of 305-405$^{\circ}C$ between the temperature ranges for the two processes occurs due to the formation of carbon-decorated vacancy clusters and precipitates. The activation energies, orders of reaction and other characteristics of recovery processes were determined by the Meechan-Brinkman method. The activation energy for the first recovery process was determined as 1.76 eV and that for the second recovery process as 2.00eV. These values are lower than those obtained by other workers. This difference may be attributed to the lower copper content of the RPV steel used in the present study. The order of reaction for the first recovery process was determined as 1.78, while that for the second recovery process as 1.67 Non-integer orders of reaction for recovery processes seem to be attributed to the fact that several mechanisms for the first order and the second order of reaction are compounded in one process. This result also supports for the above conclusions from measurements of PA parameters.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine feasibility of application of regenerated or recycled $TiO_2$ on the successive treatment of Cu(II)-EDTA. The recovery of copper, the reuse of $TiO_2$ and the assessment of acute toxicity was studied in the total eight successive photocatalytic reactions. Aqueous solution of $10^{-4}\;M$ Cu(II)-EDTA was treated using an illuminated $TiO_2$ at pH 6 in a circulating reactor. Two different procedures were applied in the reuse of $TiO_2$: i) recycle of $TiO_2$ without acid wash ii) regeneration of $TiO_2$ with acid wash to remove adsorbed copper in a previous experiment. The averaged decomplexation rate constant($k'_{obs}$) of Cu(II)-EDTA in recycle of $TiO_2$ without acid wash was approximately 45% less than that in regeneration of $TiO_2$ with acid wash. Removal of Cu(II) was near complete after 180 minutes in the total eight successive photocatalytic reactions using the regenerated $TiO_2$ after acid wash. In contrast, removal of Cu(II) was minimum at total fifth successive photocatalytic oxidation using the recycled $TiO_2$ without arid wash. The recovered $TiO_2$ was approximately 86% in average in each procedure. The recovered Cu(II) was 67.9% in average. The acute relative toxicity of the treated water rapidly declined at an initial reaction time up to 60 minutes but little declination was observed after 60 minutes due to little degradation of DOC. Relative toxicity of treated water using the recycled $TiO_2$ without acid wash we some what well correlated with the concentration of dissolved Cu(II). From this work, it is suggested that Cu(II)-EDTA can be effectively treated using an integrated cyclic photocatalytic oxidation with recovery of $TiO_2$ and Cu(II).

  • To recover phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash(ISSA), ISSA were extracted with sulfuric acid solution, and the optimal phosphorus recovery conditions were experimented by comparing the recovered phosphorus contents and heavy metals by raising pH. Also the phosphorus recovery efficiency was compared when acid extract was reused or classified by particle size of ISSA. The optimal conditions for recovering phosphorus from ISSA were 1N sulfuric acid solution with an L/S ratio of 10, and an extraction time of 30 minutes. Considering the addition of alkali substances and the content of heavy metals in the recovered sediment, it is concluded to recover phosphorus under pH 5. Reuse of the ISSA extract increased the recovery rate of phosphorus by 14~21% depending on the reuse rate (100 and 50%), but it also increased zinc contents to 33 and 21%, and copper contents to 35 and 20%, respectively. The experiment of ISSA divided into four sections by particle size showed that there was no distinct advantage of phosphorous recovery by classification of certain particle size of ISSA. The removal of heavy metals from extracts through EDTA and cation exchange resin showed no definite effect.
