Nickel toxicity and interactions of nickel with zinc, copper, and lead were studied in glowing chicks fed supplemented diet. Feed intake and growth rate of the chick were reduced by 250mg nickel as a sulfate salt per kg of feed. The toxicity of nickel was decreased by zinc or copper supplementation, but not lead. High nickel feed increased nickel level in kidney and decreased zinc levels in tibia and plasma. However, low zinc levels in tibia and in plasma were reversed by zinc supplementation. Hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and aortic elastin content were increased in chicks fed nickel. These results suggest that nickel toxicity is induced by interference with zinc metabolism.
The protective effects of high levels of dietary iron, copper, zinc or protein on lead toxicity were studied In chicks. Growth retardation, reduction of feed intake, anemia and accumulation of lead in the bone and kidney were observed in chicks fed a diet containing 500mg lead as chloride per kg of feed for 42 days. Early changes due to ingested lead were inhibition of red blood cell ${\delta}$-aminolevulinic acid dehydrase at all doses and no effect of iron, copper, zinc or protein addition were observed. Tibia lead accumulation was reduced in chicks receiving additional dietary iron or zinc compared to the lead only group but increased in chicks given supplementary protein. Decreased body weight gain was overcome by supplementary zinc or protein in chicks fed lead but not by supplementary iron. Overall the results of this study show that lead poisoning can be partly reduced by providing supplementary iron, zinc or protein, but the interaction of these element remained to be elucidated.
The efficacy of various concentration of divalent copper and zinc ions was evaluated separately for the infectivity of tobacco mosaic virus. Infectivity of TMV was more enhanced by addition of zinc, while it was decreased by addition of copper. The number of local lesions were more produced on tobacco leaves inoculated with inoculum sap containing zinc than those inoculated with sap only. The effect of copper inhibited the infectivity of TMV is dependent on copper concentration. TMV particles treated with various concentration of zinc and copper, respectively, analyzed by electrophoresis, and appeared to be altered in electrophoretic behavior. When TMV was exposed to zinc concentration at more than 200mM, the viral particles were completely degraded, and at 40-20 mM they were barely detectable, but at 2 mM they were quite stable. When TMV was exposed at less than concentration of 20 mM of copper were degraded.
The purpose of this study was to investigate zinc and copper metabolism and risk factors of chronic diseases in 20 normal adults women. The daily intake, excretions in urine and feces, and serum levels of zinc and copper were determined by 24-hr food records and chemical analysis. The results were summarized as follows. mean age, body weight and BMI were 22.88 years, 54.65kg and 21.28kg/$m^2$ respectively. Mean daily intakes of energy and protein were 1578.84㎉(79% of RDA) and 52.05g (87% of RDA). The zinc and copper intake, excrestion in urine and feces were 7093.23$\mu\textrm{g}$(59% of RDA/2093.87$\mu\textrm{g}$, 203.50$\mu\textrm{g}$/39.87$\mu\textrm{g}$ and 3416.41$\mu\textrm{g}$/857.62$\mu\textrm{g}$, respectively. The serum levels of fasting glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, zinc and copper were 76.60mg/㎗, 15.66IU/㎗, 160.30mg/㎗, 50.95mg/㎗, 89.80mg/㎗, 89.79mg/㎗, 95.65$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎗ and 73.28$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎗ respectively. Dietary ratio of Zn to Cu was shown to have significant positive correlations with serum insulin, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol. The urinary ratio of Zn to Cu was shown to have significant positive correlations with triglyceride. The serum copper level was shown to have significant negative correlations with serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. In summary, Zn consumption of adult women in their normal diet does not meet the Zn requirement for Koreans. Also, intakes of Zn and Cu may effect the glucose metabolism and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, to increase the Zn intake and to maintain an appropriate intake ratio of Zn to Cu, nutrition education needs to be implemented.
The objectives of this study were to examine the growth pattern and hair trace element contents of healthy infants who were fed breast milk(BF infant) and formula (FF infant) during the first 6 months and its relationship to intake of trace elements. Bimonthyl anthropometric measurements were obtained on 32 infants through 6 months of age. Mean calculated energy, iron, zinc and copper intake from breast milk at 2 months of age were 432.4kcal/d, 0.19mg/d, 1.18mg/d and 0.22mg/d. The values obtained from formular were543.7kcal/d, 6.68mg/d , 2.82mg/d and 0.33mg/d , respectively. In spite of the significantly lower intake of energy and trace elements in BF infants than in FF infants, BF infants showed growth above the average Kroean infant standard growth rate and showed no significant growth rate difference or hair trace element content. Hair iron content in the BF infants at 6 mo. of age was positively related to birth weight and iron intake at 2 mo. of age. In contrast, hair zinc and copper content in the FF infants at 6 mo. of age as negatively related to height increment and weight increment during 6 months, respectively. These results support the suggesting that BF infant's higher iron, zinc and copper intake is attributed to the superior bioabailability of these trace elements from breast milk.
Kinetic studies on the water-gas shift reaction catalyzed by magnetite/chromium oxide and copper/zinc oxide were carried out by using an in situ photoacoustic spectroscopic technique. The reactions were performed in a closed-circulation reactor system using a differential photoacoustic cell at total pressure of 40 Torr in the temperature range of 100 to $350^{\circ}C.$ The CO2 photoacoustic signal varying with the concentration of CO2 during the catalytic reaction was recorded as a function of time. The time-resolved photoacoustic spectra obtained for the initial reaction stage provided precise data of CO2 formation rate. The apparent activation energies determined from the initial rates were 74.7 kJ/mol for the magnetite/chromium oxide catalyst and 50.9 kJ/mol for the copper/zinc oxide catalyst. To determine the reaction orders, partial pressures of CO(g) and H2O(g) in the reaction mixture were varied at a constant total pressure of 40 Torr with N2 buffer gas. For the magnetite/chromium oxide catalyst, the reaction orders with respect to CO and H2O were determined to be 0.93 and 0.18, respectively. For the copper/zinc oxide catalyst, the reaction orders with respect to CO and H2O were determined to be 0.79 and 0, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate on the changes of copper and zinc concentration in rat's tissues and urine after cadmium administration with atomic absorption spectroph otometric method. It is found that cadmium appeared to cause a change in the behavior of copper and zinc in vivo system even during 1 month after cadmium treatment.
This study was designed in order to clarify the effect of ethanol drinking on the mineral contents on liver, kidney, muscle and hair. Forty-five rats were divided into 2 groups and a control group. The control group received tap water and the other 2 groups were given 8% and 40% ethanol as drinking source. Liver, kindney, muscle and hair samples were taken and analyzed for zinc, calcium and copper contents by atomic absorption spectrophotometric methods. The results obtained are summrized as follows; 1. The zinc content of muscle showed significant (p<0.01) decrease in both groups. 2. The calcium content of hair showed significant (p<0.1) increase in 8% ethanol group. 3. The copper contents of kidney and muscle in 8% ethanol group and liver in 40% ethanol group showed significant (p<0.1) decrease.
To add new groundwater standard, 7 candidate materials (copper, zinc, selenium, manganese, iron, chromium, aluminum) were calculated by CROWN (Chemical Ranking Of groundwater pollutaNts). Copper and zinc were selected as groundwater candidates through the process and monitored total 430 samples for 2 years with 113 groundwater sampling sites. In this study, geological distribution characteristics (igneous rock, metamorphic rock, sedimentary rock) of copper and zinc were evaluated and the geological background levels obtained by a cumulative probability distribution and pre-selection methods were compared. In the results, the highest average concentrations of the copper and zinc were observed both in the igneous rock. The detection concentration ranges of copper and zinc in 430 groundwater samples were $0.002{\sim}0.931mg\;L^{-1}$, and $0.002{\sim}32.293mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. In addition, detection concentration ranges of copper and zinc were $0.002{\sim}0.931mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.002{\sim}32.293mg\;L^{-1}$ in the igneous rock, $0.002{\sim}0.134mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.004{\sim}7.038mg\;L^{-1}$ in the metamorphic rock and $0.002{\sim}0.008mg\;L^{-1}$, $0.003{\sim}3.948mg\;L^{-1}$ in the sedimentary rock, respectively. As a result of the background concentrations with two methods, zinc concentrations with the pre-selected method are comparatively higher than that of the others with the cumulative distribution.

This study was performed to compare nutrients intake and levels of three elements (iron, copper and zinc) in the plasma of breast cancer patients to those in healthy controls. Patients (n = 97) and their age-matched healthy control groups (n = 97) participated in the study. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire specifically formulated to evaluate the consumption of nutrients was used to estimate dietary intake. Only plasma was taken from the 20 patients and their age-matched healthy control group. Plasma concentrations of iron, copper, zinc, ratio of Cu/Zn were measured in both groups. Results showed that patients consumed significantly lower protein, fat, iron. Plasma level of copper and ratio of Cu/Zn were significantly higher in patients compared to those of controls. In conclusion, change of trace elements in plasma might be useful and significant as biomakers involving the initial process. And these results imply that trace elements status is a factor related to breast cancer risk and suggest that proper intake of those nutrients is required for cancer prevention.
