This study proposes a method to reduce errors in scanning object and registration using a laser scanner. The method consists of 3 stages. First, there is an error induced by the difference of the distance between the probe and the object. It is possible to reduce the error by planning a scanning strategy: object setting, scan path. Second, the scan data of the tooling ball affects calculating the tooling ball center. A z-direction compensation is given to calculate more accurate registration points. Third, three points are used to determine a coordinate transformation on each frame. The maximum error usually lies on the third tooling ball in the conventional merging method. LSM (Least Square Method) is applied to a coordinate transformation to reduce the registration error.

Inspection and analysis are essential process to determine whether a completed product is in given specification or not. Analysis of products with very complicated shape is difficult to carry out direct comparison between inspected coordinate and designed coordinates. So process called as matching or registrations is needed to solve this problem. By defining error between two coordinates and minimizing the error, registration is done. Registration consists of translation, rotation and scale transformations. Error must be defined to express feature of inspected product. In this paper, registration algorithm is developed to determine pose of sub-frame at assembly with body of automobile by defining error between two coordinates considering geometric feature of sub-frame.

Cadastral map information is created by registering parcel information such as location, lot number, land category and boundary through the cadastral survey. However, with regard to boundary point coordinate, computerized cadastral information data was registered to either two decimal places (unit in centimeter) or three decimal places (unit in millimeter) so that a confusion in cadastral administration and cadastral survey has been caused. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to look for a method of matching two different coordinate systems through the consideration of registration of cadastral information data and area calculation. In conclusion, the result of the investigation not only shows that areal change and the creation of minute polygons resulted from land alteration could be solved by changing boundary point coordinate from two decimal places to three decimal places, but also suggests that the related laws and regulations to register boundary point coordinate to three decimal places should be institutionally corrected and applied.

In this paper, research on joint optimization of the image spatial registration and the exposure compensation is conducted. The exposure compensation is performed in a frame work of the intensity compensation based on the polynomial approximation of the relationship between images. This compensation is jointly combined with the registration problem employing the Gauss-Newton nonlinear optimization method. In this paper, to perform for a simple and stable optimization, the block-coordinate method is combined with the Gauss-Newton optimization and extensively compared with the traditional approaches. Furthermore, regression analysis is considered in the compensation part for a better stable performance. By combining the block-coordinate method with the Gauss-Newton optimization, we can obtain a compatible performance reducing the computational complexity and stabilizing the performance. In the numerical result for a particular image, we obtain a satisfactory result for 10 repeats of the iteration, which implies a 50% reduction of the computational complexity. The error is also further reduced by 1.5dB compared to the ordinary method.

This paper presents a method to reduce errors in registration, which is used in transformation coordinate system of the multiple measuring data. In general, the ICP algorithms and feature-based approaches are used for registration. In order to measure wrap-around object, it is necessary to change the scanning direction or set-up of the object. A fixture is made to reduce registration errors caused by inaccurate center point of tooling balls, providing the more accurate registration method. And, the motorized fixture controls rotation and tilting to get precise the measuring data and registration. The proposed motorized fixture and registration method have advantages in accurate registration and precise measurement, compared with the conventional methods.

When acquiring a point cloud using a 3D scanner, a registration process of making the acquired data based on each local coordinate into one data with a unified world coordinate system is required. Its process is difficult to obtain a satisfactory result with only one execution, and it is repeated several times to increase the registration precision. The criterion for determining the registration accuracy is an important factor. The previous methods for determining the accuracy of registration have a limitation in that the judgment may be ambiguous in some cases, and different results may be produced each time depending on the characteristics of the point cloud. Therefore, to calculate the accuracy of registration more precisely, I propose a method using the average distance value of the point group for the entire points rather than the corresponding points used in the registration. When this method is used, it is possible to determine the registration accuracy more reliably than the conventional methods.

For the indoor spatial modeling by terrestrial LiDAR and the analyzing its positional accuracy result, two terrestrial LiDARs which have different specification each other were used at test site. This paper shows disparity of accuracy between (1) the structural coordinate transformation by point cloud unit using control points and (2) the relative registration among all point cloud units then structural coordinate transformation in bulk, under condition of limited number of control points. As results, the latter had smaller size and distribution of errors than the former although different specifications and acquistion methods are used.

The transforming process of point clouds with its local coordinates into a global coordinate is called registration. In contrast to the local registration which takes a long time to calculate and performs precision registration after initial rough positioning, the global registration calculates the corresponding points for registration and performs at once, so it is generally faster than the local registration, and can perform it regardless of the initial position. Among the global methods, the Fast Global Registration is one of the widely used methods due to its fast performance. However, lots of parameters should be set to increase the registration accuracy and speed. In this paper, after analyzing and experimenting the parameters and propose parameters that work effectively in actual registration. The proposed result will be helpful in setting the direction when it is necessary to use the Fast Global Registration method.
In this paper, we proposed the method of virtual reality-based surgical navigation to reproduce the pre-planned position and angle of the pedicle screw in spinal fusion surgery. The goal of the proposed method is to quantitatively save the surgical plan by applying a virtual guide coordinate system and reproduce it in the surgical process through virtual reality. In the surgical planning step, the insertion position and angle of the pedicle screw are planned and stored based on the virtual guide coordinate system. To implement the virtual reality-based surgical navigation, a vision tracking system is applied to set the patient coordinate system and paired point-based patient-to-image registration is performed. In the surgical navigation step, the surgical plan is reproduced by quantitatively visualizing the pre-planned insertion position and angle of the pedicle screw using a virtual guide coordinate system. We conducted phantom experiment to verify the error between the surgical plan and the surgical navigation, the experimental result showed that target registration error was average 1.47 ± 0.64 mm when using the proposed method. We believe that our method can be used to accurately reproduce a pre-established surgical plan in spinal fusion surgery.

This study evaluates the performance of image to patient registration algorithm by using stereo vision and CT image for facial region surgical navigation. For the process of image to patient registration, feature extraction and 3D coordinate calculation are conducted, and then 3D CT image to 3D coordinate registration is conducted. Of the five combinations that can be generated by using three facial feature extraction methods and three registration methods on stereo vision image, this study evaluates the one with the highest registration accuracy. In addition, image to patient registration accuracy was compared by changing the facial rotation angle. As a result of the experiment, it turned out that when the facial rotation angle is within 20 degrees, registration using Active Appearance Model and Pseudo Inverse Matching has the highest accuracy, and when the facial rotation angle is over 20 degrees, registration using Speeded Up Robust Features and Iterative Closest Point has the highest accuracy. These results indicate that, Active Appearance Model and Pseudo Inverse Matching methods should be used in order to reduce registration error when the facial rotation angle is within 20 degrees, and Speeded Up Robust Features and Iterative Closest Point methods should be used when the facial rotation angle is over 20 degrees.
